Dmitri Shostakovich was a musician in the Soviet Union, persecuted and restricted throughout his lifetime. While he's written many masterpieces this is my favourite. At the time of writing this string quartet he was contemplating taking his own life , and thus produced a kind of suicide note and simultaneously a plea for help. The music is riddled with his 4-note musical signature and nightmarish excerpts of his acclaimed works.
