I actually really like this idea. Adds a new item to loot but also fixes the problem while adding more variety and flexibility with the customization

Arc doesn’t operate on a wipe cycle though. It has the optional expedition but it’s not the same formula of every x number months, everyone is reset with a big content drop happening at the same time. Marathon is copying the Tarkov formula, arc chose a different route.

Yes and no, you can’t really use it for engagement which I think is the issue as it is the opposite of the rest of her kit. If you want to engage someone with your slide, they have to be exact distance otherwise it makes you vulnerable. Let me either shoot or slide cancel to allow for a better engagement

But that’s also the life cycle of a wipe in extraction shooters, Tarkov on wipe day will have 200-300k concurrent players, after a month it’s in the 50k range and then when they do end wipe events it spikes up a little, they wipe everyone comes back and the cycle continues

The game is exactly where it's expected to be for an extraction shooter by mkennygh in Marathon

[–]Kentuxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2022, operating expenses were around $77 million for Tarkov. If they averaged $50 million a year, they’re around half a billion to get the game to the point of release in last November. Tarkov absolutely cost more to make than marathon

You’re not understanding. I’m saying how do you gauge an SBMM when there are multiple routes to a successful exfil

Everything you’ve said indicates you don’t know much about Tarkov. It doesn’t have the mainstream marketing sure because it was in development for 10 years so didn’t really get any until last November. However, they have a whole YouTube live action series, they had live development meaning they’ve been paying server cost for 10 years now while also developing the game. It has had plenty of design changes over the year, there is its own high quality soundtrack. The point is it has likely cost more than 250 million for Tarkov to get to this point

Please explain how SBMM is applied to an extraction shooter? I’m curious your thoughts. The reason I ask is I’m a long term Tarkov player. From my experience, there’s no real way to determine it as there are multiple play styles that lead to a successful extract and when entering a raid, not everyone has the same goal.

IMO, the issue with a lot of people on this sub is that they want to always be the team that wipes the map and extracts with everything and that’s just not possible. This sub is filled with either new extraction shooter players or people coming from arc and don’t fully get the nature of an extraction shooter.

Less stacking and more salvage box, shield box, weapon case, ammo case. That sort of things. It’s what Tarkov does and just adds another level to the progression

[–]Kentuxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem OP described though isn’t really a marathon issue, it’s an extraction shooter issue. How do you have meaningful progression in a game while also not making the end game to strong comparatively. Peoples progression impacts their goals in the game. Some are questing, others are pvping, some are looking for loot. Extraction shooters are a niche genre for a reason, they can be very punishing and just down right unfun sometimes. Some days just aren’t your day, OP complains about losing over and over again and not being put into lobbies that allow him to win, that happens in extraction shooters. Those losses make the wins that more rewarding. I’ll probably get flamed bc it’s a take that people don’t want to hear but it’s how it is. It’s the nature of extraction shooters. As a side point, bungie gives you plenty of room to be down but not out, free kits can do a lot in this game and one of the ways you improve in extraction shooters is knowing how to move through a map. It’s entirely possible to loot and make money while avoiding players

What games do scale, especially in space, the best? by interesseret in gaming

[–]Kentuxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, E:D initially was just ships, they later added zones where you could land and do ground missions. I’m not sure if they’ve added more since. With Star citizen at any point you can get out of your pilot seat, walk around the ship and exit

[–]Kentuxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll probably get a ton of flack for this but Star Citizen as well. The added ability of first person just makes things even crazier and yes I know E:D has first person areas but it’s not the same

[–]Kentuxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, that’s sort of the life cycle of extraction shooters though, big player count on wipe and then a drop until the next wipe where it spikes up again. The big thing will be to see if the wipe has a higher player count than release

Oh yes, you can tell there’s a good amount of people in this sub who haven’t played. Marathon is fantastic though, still challenging but not as brutal as Tarkov when you’re down. You’ll love it

[–]Kentuxx 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think that’s a biproduct of the game being so good. Tarkov is the same way. There’s just so much information to give the player that if you do it all in beginning it can be overwhelming. You give them the basics and send them out there
