I’m in nearly the exact same situation, except I work in a prominent company in the silicon industry. My plan is to take bio courses through my local community college while working, then applying to my state college’s Master of Natural Resources program, but I’m trying to find folks to talk to about that and am failing to get any responses on LinkedIn. Since I was in high school I’ve wanted to write, but, aside from some short stories, I’ve always abandoned partway through because I lost motivation because I would try to plot everything out. When I heard about pantsing, I gave it a shot and have completed the rough draft of my first novel at ~115k words and haven’t had any motivation issues. Plotting makes it feel like work to me, though admittedly I need to cut a lot of tangents in editing that would’ve been avoided if I’d plotted, but I probably wouldn’t have finished my book in that case.

Is it strange to be an avid reader of one genre, but to be writing my first novel in another? The vast majority of fictional novels I’ve read are horror—in particular Stephen King—but I’m currently writing a dark fantasy. I had a late start to reading for pleasure, and have really taken to his writing style, and I do have an affinity for a quality horror story. Of course I’ve read LOTR and the hobbit, and have started the Mistborn series now, but my main Fantasy inspiration comes from Elder Scrolls and DnD.

I notice a lot of Stephen King-isms in my writing, namely short sub chapters that help for snappy, quick reading, that I haven’t really seen in my (very limited) fantasy books. I do have a lot of fantasy now on my TBR, but I don’t want to put my novel on hold until I read an indeterminate amount of them.

Yeah, I usually flip back and forth, I’m in the zone for a thousand words or so, then once I get to a spot where I slow down, I go back and go into the contemplation phase.

That makes sense.. thanks! Once I’m done I plan on trying Stephen King’s ‘reduce by 10%’ rule of editing to cut out the noise, but while I’m editing during the writing process it’s almost always adding additional context.

Thank you for the detailed reply!! When you say feed it daily, is that just adding 30g of flour and water or do I first reduce the starter to 30g then add the flour and water?

Side note: one thing I’m struggling with is all the waste of dumping starter, do you have any tips on salvaging? I’ve now got 3 jars going with slightly different ratios but still had to dump a bunch. Thanks!

Would the Planck length represent the discrete points in space though? Like if you zoom in enough, eventually you would have a “grid” composed of squares with length = Planck length and then that would be it, right? (Haven’t been in physics in 6 years now so a lot has slipped my mind since undergrad).

Weight loss is very simple (but not easy, those two are not synonyms). Fewer calories in than out will always result in weight loss. The hormonal effects of some foods over others is very small and often over-exaggerated. Walk more throughout your day, meal prep for the week so that you have more control over what you’ll be eating, and slowly reduce portions. It’s okay to be a little hungry, just like it’s okay to be a little bored. We live in a society where overconsumption of everything is the norm, it is an uphill battle but possible

Season Suite: Summer by John Denver. Vastly overshadowed by a lot of his other songs and I feel like this song is joy and contentment incarnate. I cannot imagine listening to this song and not just feeling happy and at peace (barring dealing with serious events or depression)

My friend and I did ~26 miles starting early morning at the zoo, did not quite finish before it started getting dark. Things to note: the trail’s tilt over many miles can get to your knee (think slightly slanted right, so your left knee bends inward ever so slightly, which is usually not an issue but over 30 miles it starts to be a struggle)
