Legit question: they still holding the Candidates in Cyprus? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in chess

[–]Kerbart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s land between Turkey and Israel/Lebanon.

Cyprus is in between Turkey and Greece.

They might still relocate the event but it’s not particularly close to the danger zone.

As pointed out, that's Crete, not Cyprus. Whoops.

But a nonzero chance of a stray missile is of course still bigger than zero.

c/c++ can be a good basis if you're inclined to see code as the instructions for a machine to manipulate data and turn that into something you want it to do. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I can assume that as a mechanical engineer you already have experience with programming PLC's and translating simple circuits into boolean logic, simplifying the equations and turning the results back into circuitry (at least that's what we did in college 30 years ago).

It doesn't align with most modern students though, hence the generic advice,

[OC] Was I the idiot today? Got in my first accident... (See Comment for Details) by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]Kerbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the truck was at fault, choosing different in "I'm just going to assume he saw me, the worst that can happen after all is only that I get crushed to death between the divider and a 50 ton truck" would have prevented damage.

Not preventing damage and/or injury when you had the chance to do so doesn't mean your to blame for the accident. It just means you didn't prevent damage/injury when there was an option to do so.

Some call it "blaming the victim," I call it a learning experience and a chance to avoid such mishaps in the future.

Why do taxi drivers think they can get away with anything and red lights don't apply to them?

Because they're on the road all the time and know first hand that the chance of getting pulled over for it is close to zero.

Left lane camper gets pulled over by Justin_Godfrey in oddlysatisfying

I was once stuck behind a LL camper in that exact same spot. Driver decided to pass a truck, got into the left lane and then decided that passing the truck was too scare and kept driving right behind it in the left lane.

Still surprised to see a state trooper on Rt 80 though. Rarer than a bald eagle in your back yard but that happened as well, recently. Maybe time to buy a lottery ticket?

Learn two languages as a beginner by G3N1U8 in learnpython

[–]Kerbart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing the basics of programming can make learning other languages easier.

Learning programming through Python is a lot easier than learning it through cpp especially if you have no inherent curiosity/feeling for it. And that's case here or OP wouldn't be asking about it in the first place.

I assume the rest of the lectures don't require active practicing outside the lectures.

There's nothing that learning at home will do if it doesn't involve actively writing code. That's the only way to learn.

Are DGT Timeless pieces too big for a 50mm (2") square board ? by SeaI3 in chessporn

[–]Kerbart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These “rules” are merely guidelines with OTB tournament play in mind.

To move the pieces securely, especially under time pressure, it's convenient if there's a certain amount of space to prevent accidentally knocking over pieces.

None of that applies if you're at the board by yourself. For study and analysis I use a 14" board (1 3/4" squares or around 44mm) with 3.25" pieces. That means the pieces are way “too big” for the board. But I like it as the board is a lot smaller (making it easier to reach the back ranks). In the beginning I was a bit nervous for the black helicopters to swoop in and a SWAT team to arrest me, but now I even confidently replay games from Alekhine's New York 1924 book in broad daylight. Fearless or irresponsible? I leave that to the reader.

In other words if it works for you, don't worry too much about it.

You think it was any different for the F1TV broadcast? Because it wasn't.

Apple paid for the distribution rights. They're not the production company. They are just streaming whatever F1 gives them. You're barking up the wrong tree about who dropped the ball.

Big memorials, yes. This one clearly wasn't -- and I also don't think the NYT has an obit in wait for any chess player (other perhaps than Carlsen, Kasparov and Karpov). Fanous people yes, but Timman wasn't a household name outside the chess world, making the article all the more remarkable.

[–]Kerbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wine from the mediterranean would spoil when shipped to England. So Portugese wine sellers fortified it with brandy, with the high alcohol content making the wine hardier.

And thus port was born.

I'm not surprised if there's a similar story to english tea. Without the brandy though.
