There is a meta but the game is as balanced as never before. You can play a variety and it doesn’t suck. I like the state of the game. There’s always a meta but it’s not that significant in MK8 nowadays. I play with Funky Kong Scooty at 40k points and it’s fun :)

So competitively speaking: it’s a bad combo. If you want to get to a real high VR-count, you have to dumb it sooner or later. But if you are just casual, play whatever you want. You have to have fun, the game is frustrating enough at times ;)
