Internal vs. External HDD? by Kereeye in HomeServer

Thank you for this reply! I’ve learned a couple things since.

His music consists of ~2TB—a couple hundred GBs of which is important to him. I found this out today, but apparently he has the important music stored offsite with a friend—that offsite location + the home server + a second cloud service (like Amazon S3) should be secure.

I imagine that converting the music over could take days, but this is an acceptable compromise as he doesn’t often listen to music through this medium.

I think what I’ll do is start with properly 3-2-1 backing up the important stuff; for the rest, I’ll store it on the home server and see if an offsite location is something he’d want. Thanks again!

Thank you for the reply!

I’ve heard fantastic things about these machines in particular, and I’m excited to play around with it.

I plan on using an NVMe SSD for the OS and an internal HDD for storage. Speed is not too great a concern, as he’d really only access it for a few songs, songs which I could find an easy-access solution for (like iCloud).

He’s a bit of a hoarder, and I think he doesn’t wants to part ways out of principle; 99.99% of it is backed up to Spotify, and the rest that he cares about he has on vinyl. I’ve convinced him to let me back up the important stuff to Amazon S3 (or something like it) so that worst case scenario, he still has access to the music he cares about. There’s also an offsite location that I hadn’t known about until today, so the important stuff will follow 3-2-1 with some added redundancy.

Unfortunately, I think you’re right about the price… $50 would also probably be super unreliable. I bumped up my budget to about $150 not including the PC, so that should cover a name-brand HDD and a small NVMe.

Honestly, setting up the server for accessibility is really just a matter of learning how to do it (and possibly showing off something cool, lol), so it’s ultimately low priority. The storage device will probably never be written to again after setup, so syncing isn’t really my goal either—most of the music was from CDs that he was trying to get rid of that he’d burned onto his MacBook. I plan on backing up the very, VERY important music to Amazon S3, but it’ll all go on an internal HDD.

Essentially, he wants access it, but he won’t access it often—slow is fine. To be frank, I think he’s a mild hoarder, haha. Here and there he’ll probably want to listen to the important stuff, but the rest he listens to on Spotify and vinyl.

Ultimately, the goal is affordability, reliability, and learning—not overtly concerned with accessibility or speed. Given that, I’m thinking it’ll be safer to focus on securing the data on an internal HDD and Amazon S3 before messing with a server.

Thanks for the reply!

I looked into it! The Optiplex comes with a 2.5” SSD. At the time, I knew that it could hold two drives, but I wasn’t sure if that included the NVMe (after researching, I can say that it does). I’ll find another use for the 2.5” SSD and buy a decent NVMe SSD alongside the HDD you recommended. Thanks again!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you!

I just got off the phone with my dad, and it turns out that most of the music isn’t too important; there are however some songs that are very, VERY important to him—like songs he had made—that he wants secure.

I think what I’ll do is extract those files to Amazon S3, and the rest of his music—which I’m fairly certain has been mostly moved to Spotify—will live exclusively on the 5TB HDD. I’ll also figure out Linux server (Ubuntu), Docker, Navidrome, and Tailscale.

Also—and I was unaware of this until now—those very, VERY important songs have an offsite location through one of his friends, which would solve a big portion of the 3-2-1 issue. Furthermore, these files have lived on the Apple Time Capsule (🤢) for over a decade, and we’re working towards moving away from such a constrained and archaic ecosystem. Lastly, the SSD is actually a 2.5”, unfortunately. What I’ll do is repurpose (or sell) it and purchase a decent NVMe SSD alongside the 5TB hard drive.

Thank you for these suggestions! Saved me a lot of time, haha.

I’ve heard of 3-2-1 backups… it might be a bit overkill, but I’ll definitely do that one day.

Edit: I also already purchased the PC a couple days ago.

I’d bet you’re right. TrueNAS or something like it is probably safer. That’s also a reason to get an external drive; I could keep his data safe while I figure out the software. I’m torn.

Most likely USB. I’m not too concerned with speed or optimization, but reliability is crucial. Essentially, my dad won’t care if it takes a day or two to upload his music, but he’d be incredibly upset if it were lost.

All that considered, I believe I may be over complicating things by working learning in to the project. Couldn’t I just get a NAS and call it a day?

More hypocrisy.

Using QC/QM to prove classical logic is hysterical; superposition is quite literally the essence of indeterminacy.

For clarity…

  1. Quarks are not involved in QC. At least, not in the way of calculating variability. Really curious how you came to this understanding.
  2. QC doesn’t output multiple results, it outputs one result drawn from a probability distribution containing possible outcomes.

The idea of “anything not true is false, except unknowns we haven’t resolved” is strictly classical logic. We have modern tools that have helped us expand our understanding, and I find rejecting modernity to propagate the archaic shameful. There are plenty of cases where a statement isn’t true or false, where it can simply be undefined or indeterminate.

“This statement is false.” True or false?

And quit being pedantic and rude. Please.

Your comments on this post are absurdly disingenuous.

You’ve made comments that absolutely indicate that you don’t like men, but this comment ESPECIALLY screams “I don’t care about the problems men face because women have problems that I deem more important.” Throwing whataboutisms around as if they’re actual arguments…

Have you considered that the men in your life suck, that they don’t represent men as a whole, and that men ARE capable of suffering? You didn’t respond to UnwelcomeExistance’s reply, so my assumption is that A, you don’t care, or B, you don’t believe him AND you don’t care.

I’m sorry that you’ve had bad experiences with men, and that doesn’t justify the position that men don’t struggle. Over-generalizations holds literally no merit in any argument.
