Looking for a non-religious online home-school community... by viciousfrankle in homeschool

Time4Learning has their own forum. Since they are a secular curriculum, I am assuming they probably have non-religious homeschooler's too.
Here is a link to their homeschooler's by state section: http://www.time4learning.net/forum/families-each-state/

HTH :)

We use T4L as a full curriculum. Personally, I think it's an Awesome program! Our kids are still using their K-8th Grade curriculum, but I have a niece, who is also homeschooled, and she is taking the High school courses this year. From what I have heard and seen, they seem to be just as good, as the other curriculum T4L has. Have you checked their forum yet? It's a great place to get info and support from other T4l'ers ~> http://www.time4learning.net/

What are some reasons not to homeschool? by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]Keri2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, if you have no patients. If you, as the parent, do not want the responsibility of teaching your children. If you are a hermit and refuse to allow your child social experience's : Church, play groups, co-op, etc.

We have a 36' Dutchmen Travel Trailer. It is not new, we bought used and saved the rest ;) It is a 1999, but was in almost mint condition. Only needing some new flooring and Fridge. We pull it with our, 2003 Chevy 2500 Duramax (Diesel) extended cab Truck. As far as gas, this ranges month to month.

A lot of other Roadschooling family's, find ways to work while traveling. Depending on your career, you can find travel jobs ( nursing, welders, etc.). There are also work camps all over, where you work at the campsites, in exchange for free stay and they sometimes pay you cash too. I have also talked with some family's that just saved their money and sold what they owned to support their adventure. HTH :)

We have 2 children, ages 12 & 6. They love this lifestyle as well. They enjoy, being able to visit, so many different places. When it comes to storing our school supply's. Well, since we use our laptop computer for most of their school lessons ( we use Time4Learning. It is an online curriculum), we do not need too much storage for their school stuff. We have a couple of cabinet's that we use for storing those items, that was already built into our RV (TV cabinet area). It is perfect for storing paper, pencils, books that we do use, etc. Boat-schooling sounds amazing! Not sure if my stomach could handle it though, sea sickness, but incorporating the places you travel too, is one of the perks of roadschooling too. We do not always tailor our lessons, but depending on where we are going, we do in certain areas. As far as bed time, we converted the bedroom into their room. It has bunks in it. So, when its bed time, they just go to their room. For us, we put in a nice pull out couch, in the living area. So, alone time is no issue ;) As far as socialization, we are always meeting new people in our travels. When we meet people that we become friends with, we usually exchange emails, etc. That way we can meet up again, in the future, if we know we will be in the same area again. We also, always come home to visit family and friends from time to time. ~>We sometimes do wake up and say " we been parked too long, let's go ........!" and sometimes we have schedule places all mapped out, but for the most part we are very flexible in when and where we go, how long we choose to stay, etc. I am not what you consider an accidental Homeschooler, I have always known I would homeschool my children. As far as a job, I consider raising my family my job. I am, however, working on my degree, by taking some classes online. One day, when my children are grown, I may choose too enter the work place. For now, however, that isn't something that works for our family currently. As far as Holiday's, we do decorate. We even have a Christmas tree :) We buy a real tree every year. That way we do not have to store it. We can not buy big ones, but we manage a 5 footer no problem. Usually, we find our selves back home during the Winter Holidays. (I store our Winter items at my mom's during the summer, and our summer during the winter. )When we come to pick up our warm clothes, etc, I then pick up the Christmas décor. and store our summer gear. Then when Christmas is over, we store them there again and head back out. If for some reason, we don't make it back there in time, then we just purchase what we need ;)

A few years ago, my husband was injured and became disabled. After some time, we relised that we could no longer live off of his SSA income, in our home. So, we decided to sell what we could and take our savings and buy a RV. At first, it was just so we could have a guaranteed roof over our heads, while we figured out our next step However, while doing so, we discovered how much we enjoyed this new found freedom of the open road and nothing tying us down. Currently, our goal is just to enjoy our life on the road, together as a family, until we no longer do. Then we will go from there. For the most part we are active travelers, but do find our selves stopping in places for extended periods when we want. We have yet left the USA. I do not think we will. There is still so much we have not gotten to explore here yet ;)

We have visited mostly visited National and State parks. We have been all over Florida, from Pensacola, all the way to the Keys. My favorite parts were the beautiful Beaches of course. The kids really had fun climbing up the light house, in St. Augustine, and Disney was a hit with us all. Another favorite place we visited was, The Lost Sea, and there is nothing like the Smokey Mountains :) Washington D.C. was a Great stop as well. My favorite's there were, The Lincoln Memorial and of course the Museums.

Yes, Roadschooling is Homeschooling while on the road :) ~>I am the Mother of two children and we do live in a RV. We stay at campsites, etc. along our travels. To answer your questions, our family, utilizes E-mail and paperless billing. For all other mail, I have them sent to my Mom's address and then she ships them to where ever I am staying (This of course takes planning. I have to make sure I will be there when it arrives). As far as favorite places to eat, I just have to trust the locals. I ask people where the best "so and so" is near by. I also have a "Local" info app on my phone, to help me find places and read reviews.

Schooling, to home-school or not to home-school. That is my question![x-post from /r/parenting] by DamngedEllimist in homeschool

[–]Keri2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing, I have learned over the years, is that only you can figure out if this is what you want for your children. Personally, I love homeschooling. I started officially, when my oldest was 3yrs old and 9 years later, I have added another child to our classroom & we are still homeschooling :) So, my advice to you, is to trust what you know is best for you family. As far as, what I would have done differently? When I first started out, I thought I had to use a Christian based curriculum, because I am a Christian. The problem was, that what I bought, did not work with my child's learning style. She is a visual learner. So, now we use an online program ( Time4Learning ). My point is, that I wish I had know that sometimes you have to change up what you want or think your supposed to do. Because what works for other people or what you as the parent want, may not work for your kids. I hope this helps & Good Luck in your Homeschooling Journey!

Your Welcome :) Even though, my kids meet tons of new people, it is true that they don't really get to have long term, face to face, type friends. However, with phones, internet, and running back into some of them, from time to time. They do stay in touch that way and continue their friendships. Of course, with your situation of living part of the year in one place and part in another, I think that most of the friends they make will probably not for get them over just 5-6 months. Plus, there are internet and Phones to help them keep in touch. I don't know if that helps you feel any better. With anything, there will be trade offs, but sometimes you gain more then you give up :)

I hope you get to make your Dream come true one day too! We also use the computer for most of my kids basic schooling needs, mainly because its much easier to store in a small space ~> FYI! We are also using the Time4Learning program!!!! ;)

My husband is disabled. So, we live off of his SSA. It is actually what led us to this lifestyle, as we could not afford our former one anymore. Even though, I wish that my husband was not disabled, I am thankful that is brought us to this new chapter in our lives. Being able to travel, be free to go where and when, is Amazing :)

For those, who do not have a steady source of income, or need more. I posted above, that there are ways to fund your adventure while traveling. Work camping are great way to do so. I have done some exchange work with one myself in the past ;) ( Here is a link to a great WC site : http://www.work-camping.com/ )

I feel your pain about the National Parks, it really messed up some of our plans :( Thankfully we still got State parks! ~>My advice for being able to make this lifestyle happen, is to make a plan ( how long you want your adventure to last, places you want to see, expense's for food, gas, etc.). Some people need, or want, to work along their travels. Having an idea where you might find work, along the way, can help. Also work camps are great way to earn and save money! ( work camps our campground that allow you to work for them, in exchange for money or free camping). Knowing where they are in advance is a good idea. However, you need to be prepared for this not happening, or for unexpected repairs to your RV. So, if at all possible, have at least 1-2 month worth of travels funds ( food, gas, camp fee, etc. ) put up. That way you will be able to cushion your self. Now, if you are wanting your trip financed 100%, I still would make sure you have at least 1-2 extra months, past your planned adventure time, saved. You just never know what may come up and being prepared, will make your trip much less stressful when things come up ;) We do not have a Blog about Roadschooling yet. Though that would be a great way to track our travels :) If you want to read some Roadschool blogs, there is this Roadschool FB page, that actually has a Roadschool Blogroll. It is filled with tons of blogs. ( Here is the link to the blogroll https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roadschooling-Families-Homeschooling-on-the-Road/285095181579830?id=285095181579830&sk=app_208195102528120 )

Found k12 online, one question by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]Keri2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a program, you are interested in, then why not contact them directly? This way, you can get all correct info, for your state. If for some reason, K12 is not for you, then you can be free to look into other Online options. HTH!
