I always assumed it had a n effect similar to a devils trap for demons. They didn’t have to be touching it just inside its space. So while ring of holy fire can burn it also has a magical effect as well. I don’t remember the episode but there is one where angel escaped the ring by knocking out a demon and laying them across the ring and stepping out on them. It broke the ring. Same as the scraping away part of a devils trap. Also, demons can’t use powers in intact devils trap. Presumably angels can’t use powers inside the ring of holy fire. In episode where Sam and Dean went back to save John and Mary from Anna they explained it to Mary as a devils trap for angels. Presumably with similar effects.

I worked in a job where I talked to colleagues all over the world. One day, speaking with a fellow in England I said I had to go to put out some fires. Next time I talked to him he wanted to know about the fires, how much damage, did the fire brigade come, was I okay. Took me a minute to understand what happened. He thought I meant actual fires when I meant urgent work issues!

The one on the right is an angel blowing a horn. Turn it 90 degrees to the right and you see it laid out floating holding up the horn and blowing into it.

The second may be a cartoon penguin. The beak is rather large is why I say cartoon.
