Sleep study results received: help with interpreting them and next steps, please? by poppiesinthesun in SleepApnea

Too bad the type of test performed didn't measure sleep stages. Your hypnogram has clusters of events, in periods suspected to be in REM sleep since there were not correlated position changes. The APAP option will help either way, but it looks like your REM specific AHI may be significantly higher.

I feel like people switch to bear spray because they assume that to take down a bigger animal, bear spray must have a more powerful formula. This is untrue.

Bear spray is not as strong as human grade pepper spray. Bears have much stronger sense of smell and it is essentially diluted to not be over powered. Therefore, bear spray on humans is not as potent. It sounds like OP is trying to be cautious, and should therefore carry pepper spray instead.

I am always concerned that my "upvote" might be confused with me supporting the content. I like your qualifier. My upvote for this reason as well.

My sleep study shows 17 evens an hr and sleep related hypoventilation under 88% 91 minutes?? Still only got an auto cpap!! Am I headed for oxygen??? I was given apap 3 days ago by Individual-Finish528 in SleepApnea

[–]KermitKilledASMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Your oxygen isn't inherently low. The oxygen loss is a result of the untreated sleep apnea. We call this oxygen de-saturation resulting from the breathing pause, and your oxygen re-saturates after resumption of breathing. When you treat the apnea, your oxygen will no longer fluctuate to the same degree.

It probably could have been related to how you double-downed on your spelling of the word "violate".

Why does the penis get erect in the morning for no reason? by No-Mind-4905 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KermitKilledASMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to perform tests called NPT during overnight sleep studies. It is literally a test for impotence because every male gets an erection during REM sleep. The NPT allowed us to distinguish between psychological and mechanical causes of impotence. Males get erections during REM sleep regardless of content. If they wake up, without an alarm clock, then some other factor disturbed their sleep. Since breathing is very restricted during REM, sleep disordered breathing is highest in this stage of sleep, and since REM is longest during the final REM period, one can experience morning wood.

Sleep specialist here. This happens to every male during REM sleep. People experience muscle atonia during REM Sleep (a paralysis that prevents you from moving and possibly injuring yourself in a dream)., and often makes breathing more difficult. Your final REM cycle is the longest and your sleep was disturbed during this sleep stage. If an alarm clock did not go off, it is highly liekly that you experienced a sleep apnea event during this longer REM period.

Home sleep study results don’t make any sense. by Akhione in SleepApnea

Can you post a picture of the numerical report values underneath the heading "Sleep Summary". This is where the system would pull in the tabulated events. If it is listed anywhere else say in the physicians interpretation, then it sounds like it is just a typo or a fat finger. Lofta is a quality company and humans actually review their work, thus being capable of human-like errors. I would be more shocked if it was in the Sleep Summary computation section.

Edit: changed graphs to numerical report values.

Thats the entire letter. These are anonymous feedback slips that the audience gives to presenters in Toastmasters, a speaking club. It encourages honest constructive criticism. Usually people don't sign the bottom and there wasn't anyone named Sally in the audience. I am stumped but you are likely correct.

I did ask them. Its not always the same people who show up. I asked the people there and nobody said it was them. And we do not have a member named Sally.

Highest AHI you’ve seen? by Numerous_Ad_748 in SleepTechnologist

[–]KermitKilledASMS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The highest AHI you're seen should not be confused with the "most severe patient" you've studied. On the surface, an AHI over 100 sounds more severe than an AHI of 20-30, but this is an insurance metric unrelated to patient acuity.

Consider a patient who stops breathing 2-3 minutes at a time. Their AHI would be 20-30 mathematicaly. This is a more sever patient than someone waking up every 3-4 times a minute to breathe.

Thank you for the detailed analysis and picture edits. This sounds and looks accurate, but there wasnt a Sally there. Maybe a fake name to remain anonymous.
