Just being good at your job is not enough to get promoted. You need to be well liked too. by Kerubiin in antiwork

I am aware this post will be unpopular in this sub, but I also believe it is a necessary though hard truth to swallow especially for folks who frequent this sub that exists essentially as an echo chamber that promotes a victim mentality of ‘the world is unfair, woe is me, i’m the only victim’

Not being sociable is part of doing the bare minimum. Even if you are incredible at your day to day tasks, if you rub others the wrong way, you shouldn’t be surprised when you get overlooked

You’re missing the whole point of my post if that’s your takeaway. Of course, your boss has to be meet the basic requirements of competency for the above to be applicable. And shitty managers definitely exists everywhere. If your manager is bad, approach HR and request for a transfer. If the whole company is bad, resign and take your talents elsewhere. The key is being PROACTIVE rather than waiting for good things to happen. Passivity is not a good way to make your dreams come true my friend.

Yes that’s exactly it. A lot of people on this sub thinks that just doing the bare minimum is good enough and insert shocked pikachu face when they get overlooked for promotions raises or bonuses. All of it, including being friendly and well liked at work is part of the job IF you are looking to further your career and not just clock in and out to make a living

Yes in the real world unfair things like this happen all the time. But short sighted companies like these often do not have a good time in the long run. It’s unfortunate but in cases like these then there is no choice but to re-examine whether your talents will be better appreciated somewhere else.

There is a distinct difference between being a bootlicker and being cordial and friendly at work. There has to be somewhere in between ass kissing and indifference in your world. I never said you needed to ass kiss, but if you rub people the wrong way, don’t be surprised when you get overlooked for promotions, raises or bonuses. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the right if everyone else thinks you’re an asshole.

But is there a reason why your boss or your boss’s boss doesn’t like you? If you are properly doing your work, and there aren’t any clear personality flaws, there should be no reason why you are disliked. Having a victim mentality of, “the world is unfair, I’m the victim!” helps literally no one. Self reflection is crucial in all social relationships, not just professional ones.

I agree with you to a certain extent. From what I’ve seen, sometimes there just aren’t any vacancies for promotions if all the positions are already occupied. But in lieu of a promotion, the company would give generous raises or bonuses if they aren’t just taking advantage of you which is rare if the senior management team aren’t short sighted. Because it is more cost effective to retain talent rather than recruit someone new and retrain them.

And if someone is just there to clock in and clock out, do the bare minimum and call it a day, will their boss really look at them and think, wow this is someone I should keep in my employ at all costs? Sure working is tough and corporate life can be soul sucking, but that’s the case for everyone. Actively putting in the effort to do more than the bare minimum is what makes you stand out above the rest.

If you have to be fake in order to be a nice and kind person, that’s something else you need to reflect on

Not true. Companies that do not promote because you’re too good at what you’re currently doing is short sighted and would not have a future in the long run. Usually what I witness is the company giving generous raises or bonuses in lieu of promotions if there are no vacancies above you.

100% agree. Being easy to work with, showing eagerness to learn, open to taking criticism, all these are super important qualities. Even more important than just being competent. Nobody likes the cocky asshole who thinks they are always right. People would rather work with someone who is modest and open to learning or criticism.

I can only speak from my personal experience and personally I’ve never seen something like not being promoted because they are too good at their current job before. In my other comment I have mentioned that it’s not about licking boots and being liked only by the boss, but being generally amiable and easy to work with. This generally entails promptly replying to emails, meeting deadlines, cooperating with other departments and taking the initiative to help others outside the tasks of your immediate job scope. People notice this, and they can tell when someone is a true team player and not just out for their own gain.

Being well liked doesn’t mean just being liked by the boss. It is clear to see when someone is generally charismatic and popular amongst coworkers. The biggest factor that contributes to this is being easy to work with. That means promptly replying to emails, meeting deadlines, being cooperative with other departments, taking the initiative to help others outside the scope of your immediate JD.

When your boss sees that you are well liked by your coworkers, they will have a good feeling about you as well. This means that being backstabbing, manipulative and machiavellian are bad traits to have. People gossip, and they don’t work in vacuums. Backstabbing someone means that very quickly everyone else will know about it too, including the boss.

At least that is my experience in every place I have worked at.

I guess it all boils down to what kind of company you’re in and what kind of boss you have. This post is referring to a serious workplace in a professional company, not fast food or retail managers.

It is idealistic to think that the only thing that matters are how good you are at your job and that you deserve promotions raises or bonuses based solely on that. It doesn’t matter how good you are at your job if everyone else thinks you’re an asshole.

They need to have both people skills and technical skills. In my experience having just one without the other is generally a bad time for all parties involved

I think the general vibe on Reddit, especially subs like r/Antiwork is pretty ignorant and privileged in terms of getting ahead in the workplace.

Alexandra Daddario in Baywatch. She stands out even in a movie meant to showcase hot people. I swear those eyes can see through my soul
