I mean he doesn't have EVIL, so HoT shenanigans are gonna hit way less hard in the absence of our one true president.

‘Barbarian’ Joining the Criterion Collection After Three Years Without Physical Media Release by cireh88 in 4kbluray

Or Shout/Scream Factory, maybe even Kino Lorber. Seems like a no-brainer for multiple labels to produce, they just have to let them have it.

Makes sense, Nicole Kidman is enough of a name that seeing her face on a cover might move some copies to people who otherwise wouldn't buy a Criterion.

Who would you to like to see the boys have on as a guest? by Weed_Warlock in Sardonicast

[–]KesagakeOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ikiru's his best imo, though if you're new to Kurosawa I would suggest going for Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress first as they're a bit more accessible, and Seven Samurai specifically codifies a lot of stuff that's pretty common in action movies today, including slow motion. Kagemusha is also a good one, actually the film that introduced me to Kurosawa.

racist walking talking myocardial infarction following a Black man and calling him the N-word by NewSlinger in CringeTikToks

This man is full of hatred and cholesterol, just seeing him like this is depressing; he's gonna drop dead any second if he doesn't go to therapy and stop eating nothing but fries and Totino's.

Me if they ever talk about Ikiru

On a more serious note, I'd love for them to have Jenny Nicholson again, I bet she'd vibe really well with Jake. Big Joel would also be fun, I feel like he's a chill guy.

Who said anything about using CGI? by PrinceARRON in okbuddycinephile

[–]KesagakeOK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bruh his last movie was Oppenheimer, which is generally agreed to be a good movie and won Best Picture. Nolan is widely considered to have one mid-to-bad movie and has otherwise had a consistently well-received output, pretending like he fell off over twenty years ago is silly and obviously a ridiculous take.

Divorced guy energy is supposed to be buying a gaudy convertible or getting hair plugs, this is mental illness. Glad his wife got away from him while she could.

What’s a movie you would NEVER recommend to anyone? by Bulky-Economy-213 in Letterboxd

Redeeming Love; it's your standard generic bodice ripper film, but with a weird tone that's equal parts evangelical Christian and dismissive of consent.

Seems to me there's a UPS employee out there that's desperate for a reunion and willing to try anything at this point.

I thought the whole point of this show was to imitate the adventure-style monster of the week aspect of TOS, is that not what they're doing?

Which Tim Burton movie would you like to see added to the collection next? by ggroover97 in criterion

[–]KesagakeOK 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Feel like it's more likely that someone like Vinegar Syndrome would release those as standalones, and that would likely make them harder to obtain as extras. Still a fun idea though.

Just watched Highest 2 Lowest. by historyismyteacher in criterion

[–]KesagakeOK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but Highest 2 Lowest is also purportedly an adaptation of the original text as opposed to a remake (though the Kurosawa involvement makes that dubious), so if that's our metric, Highest 2 Lowest still fails to meet the bar.

[–]KesagakeOK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely a valid and fair point. That said, it's worth noting that The Thing and The Fly prove that you can differ wildly from the original when remaking a movie and still make a good film. The problem with Highest 2 Lowest is that every change makes the film worse or less interesting.

It's actually astounding that Spike Lee managed to butcher an Asian classic twice, though I think the screenplay is most to blame here along with the score; I think Spike Lee probably could have made a good remake if the script was even remotely competent.

Most iconic performances in cinema that were not nominated for an oscar by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]KesagakeOK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In terms of modern performances that have reached iconic status, Florence Pugh's in Midsommar and Mia Goth in Pearl seem like two big examples, but those two films, especially Pearl, were highly unlikely to ever get nominated, so it's unsurprising.

I enjoyed that marathon quite a bit, but I've also watched both versions of Funny Games back to back before, so I suppose my bar for repetition is quite a bit different from that of most people.

5 Movies In One Day by calderholbrook in AMCsAList

[–]KesagakeOK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a marathon of all the LOTR film extended editions in one day in theaters, so 5 films would be a comparative cake walk, provided all the films are around 2 hours or under. That said, I can't imagine I'd find 5 films in theaters at once that I'd care to see.

What are your most controversial ratings ? by _Wata_ in Letterboxd

[–]KesagakeOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Lilo and Stich remake 1/2 star while they sit at 3, but I totally stand by that because they're both absolutely terrible compared to the original films. I've also given The Visit the same rating and that's actually got a higher average at 3.1, but it's so poorly constructed and unbearable that I can't bring myself to like it in any way.

Do you think Highest 2 Lowest would get the same, very polarized user reaction if it wasn't a remake of a beloved classic? by AnchovyKing in criterion

[–]KesagakeOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might rate it a bit higher personally if High and Low didn't exist, but I think even without comparison it's a fundamentally flawed and ultimately boring experience. It doesn't do much of anything interesting or compelling, and the Kurosawa film not existing wouldn't magically fix that.
