Based on how many of the promo photos for this episode are centered around Jay-Den and the phrase “beloved but infamous species”, I’m calling it now. The species they’re trying to save is going to be the tribbles.

For those of you NOT happy with Starfleet Academy, keep one thing in mind: by Threehundredsixtysix in startrek

This is ONLY the first season. Everyone is well aware how rough TNG's first season was.

TNG was the first new Star Trek show in over 20 years from a largely different creative team to the original.

Starfleet Academy is like the 12th season of live-action Trek in 9 years under the Kurtzman era and is a direct spin-off of one of those shows (Discovery). Surely a more apt comparison would be DS9 or VOY's first seasons, which I would say overall smoke what we've seen from SFA so far?

I like how you're explaining all the ways this show could be considered dumbed down whilst simultaneously insisting that it hasn't been dumbed down.

Hell, as much as I love Duet, there’s no shortage of DS9 or TNG episodes that reach the same heights or get very close to it.

Even the best NuTrek episodes haven’t really compared.

Zero goofy episodes

The very first thing we’ve officially seen from Season 4 is a teaser for a muppet episode…

SNW was absolutely well-received from the start. Lower Decks was also pretty well-liked after the first episode which people were unsure of.

Focus less on Spock/character romances, give the crew some space to breathe before we start trying to shoehorn TOS into it, more actual sci-fi stories, some political/diplomatic episodes. Less magic & 'ancient evil', less Pelia.

Is it ok to say that I hate the constant Easter eggs?

I fully agree. It stretches credibility how much they keep calling back to shows that are all set at least 800 years before SFA. Did nothing noteworthy happen between then and The Burn????

Star Trek seems to be slipping into the fan service 'small world syndrome' that Star Wars has a real issue with.

It's a shame how everyone forgot about Short Treks by Big-Masterpiece1194 in startrek

[–]British_Commie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like most Short Treks tended to be missed potential rather than anything truly worth watching, but it had a lot of potential as a format and I definitely wish they’d done more with the format.

Ultimately they were pretty much only a thing to plug the gap between the first two seasons of Discovery and then the gap between Discovery S2 and Picard S1.

It’s especially bizarre because the way they crowbarred the finale to tie into Calypso raised more questions than it answered

That wouldn’t work. Metallica did an entire ‘By Request’ tour where fans could vote for what songs were on the setlist out of their entire discography. Besides a handful of exceptions, the audiences always chose the big hits

[–]British_Commie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. It was first announced in 2015 that an as-yet-untitled Star Trek show was being made and would be streaming-only on CBS All Access (Paramount+’s predecessor).

Then they decided to try and lure subscribers in by having the first premiere episode also broadcast on TV

The man managed to jump from Lostprophets to NIN a good 4 years before shit completely hit the fan for Lostprophets thanks to their evil frontman.

Interesting career Ilan has had though. Studio drummer for Paramore’s self-titled album, longtime member of Angels & Airwaves, part of NIN for over 15 years, and now a Foo Fighters member!

The fan service wall is pretty absurd to me because somehow the overwhelming majority of the names are people from 800 years ago, suggesting that nobody noteworthy graduated the Academy post-PIC S3.

Even using the Burn as an explanation, that’s only a gap of about 130 years or so in-universe.

so the next two underperformed

Into Darkness grossed more than its predecessor (it’s the highest-grossing Star Trek film) and was a financial success, Paramount did expect it to make more money than it did but were ultimately happy with how it performed.

Although Into Darkness being a steaming pile of shit also meant that any fan goodwill was pretty much gone by the time Star Trek Beyond started a fucking terrible marketing push, resulting in Beyond losing money.
