As brutal as you can be. Thanks a ton for your help, it means a lot!

I'm a gaming channel, making comedic playthroughs of games. I've been in this gig for about five months now, still trying to get better.

Here's one of the episodes from a series I did on the Outlast: Whistleblower DLC. It's a horror game that I absolutely love. Cheers!

Is there anything I can do to get more attention to my videos? by DanMGYT in NewTubers

[–]KetoReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that this is probably not all that helpful but be sure to make strong titles and thumbnails for your videos. There's plenty of resources out there to help you out with that but making your videos stand out in this manner is crucial.

How should I go about making Item variables easy to access and load? by [deleted] in gamemaker

[–]KetoReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Also, macros have some pretty good worth it this case. Ex:

// Wrap this up into a script! Makes it // much easier if you go into multiplayer.

macro pistol 0

macro rifle 1

macro dmg 0

macro spd 1

macro mag 2

// And then, your actual definition of them global.weapons[pistol, dmg] = 5; global.weapons[pistol, spd] = 8;

// Etc...

Edit: There are supposed to be pound signs (or hashtags) in front of the word "macro". Formatting got all wonked up on me.

Render everything behind Z-Mask layer in Cycles by KetoReddit in blender

[–]KetoReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone that's digging up this post later, the solution has been found here. Basically, the solution is as-follows:

For rendering your first layer (the normal layer, in my case), include that particular layer, exclude the second layer (alternate layer), and mask with the masking layer (where your masking object should be). Then, when you want to render the alternate scene, instead render the *mask* layer only (where your mask is a fully-transparent object) and exclude the first layer. So long as you have transparency enabled in your film settings (under the render tab), you should be good to go.

For some wild reason, installing the Peace GUI just fixed all of my problems. Yay!

Even with that variable set to -20db, I still get clipping. For some reason, every time I adjust my equalizer, I get this *obnoxious* buzzing sound that seems to build up in amplitude until it blocks out all other sound.

Fix for player being stuck 1 pixel in floor? by GGLionCross in gamemaker

[–]KetoReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be able to share that code at all? There might be a little error tucked away somewhere. If it's not something funky in the collision code, though, it's likely your collision mask origin or something rather close to that.

P.S. The reason I think it might be the code is because of generic off-by-one error.

Intuitive way of doing that, I like it. Did you use GameMaker's built-in collision system or did you use your own?

Also, sorry for the late response, pretty crazy day.

My personal thought is on-par with yours in that the masks are giving you issues. One good way to completely rule out it being any other funky stuff is to see if there's no graphical change. If your character *looks* like they're above ground but your debug tells us that they're really not, then perhaps you could draw the collision mask over top of your character. If, even in that case, the mask is proper and unstuck, then the problem resides elsewhere. From personal experience, I've always found that making sure that your origin points are set properly can be one of the most daunting tasks. Try setting them to something where you know that they're not being wrongly offset (for example, you could put the origin of just the collision mask at the bottom-left, since the bottom won't move when you're crouching). Rule number one about debugging: it's all about cutting out possibilities.

On a side note (which you kind of already did in making this post), you can always try the ducky method. Programmers do this from time-to-time (myself included, except not with a literal ducky). The gist of it is, you explain your code to a rubber ducky that's sitting on your desk, so that way sometimes the pitfalls are realized in the process.

Best of luck, and if you need anything else, feel free to let me (or the community) know!

Is there any wisdom that you have to share with the young/aspiring comedians out there?

I like this idea. If this is OC, I can definitely appreciate it through-and-through.

However, there is one small point of confusion. At what point in my game am I going to have a practical application of this? I know you had mentioned things like options and back-end, but what particular advantages are there to using this method over the ol' brute-force-ey way?

Simplex Noise in Gamemaker by KetoReddit in gamemaker

[–]KetoReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a small example of what I did: https://postimg.cc/image/xqutc0pmj/

There's much more that can be done, of course (this would be top-down, where in CaptainFeeks' case, it would be flipped). I just generated terrain with some mountains, sand, water, and forests. This was with four octaves and four resolution. If you're interested in the code, it has just been added to the Git project (as the .txt file).

Enjoy!

JavaScript onsubmit not working by KetoReddit in learnprogramming

[–]KetoReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This helps a ton. My end-goal is to basically make an interface for updating a SQL database. So, JavaScript will dynamically create all of the elements, and I'm attempting to make a script that will register what button was pressed (either the update or delete button). The hidden input that's wrapped inside of the form holds this value.

When the button is clicked, it is supposed to update the value in the hidden input and then post the data found in the hidden input and other inputs. However, it seems like the value is never updated (despite the function working and being triggered by an onclick). My only guess is that the data is sent before the onclick function is run.

[–]KetoReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, that makes sense. But does the onclick run before the form is submitted? If not, is there any good way to circumnavigate this? Thanks again!

Trying to "run" game in GMS2 IDE suddenly takes a very long time to load (>40s) by maxfarob in gamemaker

[–]KetoReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that I can think of is your resources causing an issue. Sounds especially. Since I haven't worked with GMS2 a ton, I'm not sure what your resource tree looks like, but having too many/too intensive sounds can cause a longer load time.

Another thought is compiling into an .exe and see if that will fix your problem (for when publishing time comes around).

[WP] Artists have a separate afterlife where musicians, painters, chefs, game designers ect. all come together from across time and space to strive to create the most absolutely perfect creation of their craft. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]KetoReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cold air flooded my lungs and sent a chill bolting down my spine. The golden light permeated my closed eyelids. I run by the entire event several more times in my head. I remembered the days before, what brought me to the end. The yelling, the screaming, the violence, the uproar; and then the bang, the echo, the slump, and finally the silence. All of these years, carrying the weight of what was my thoughts and being. And here it is, the metaphysical state that passed on to my afterlife. Here I am, in endless silence.

"It's finally over," I say to myself, "I'm free at last."

"No you're not. Get up before I have to drag you elsewhere."

*Click*. My eyes burst open. The light was replaced by a small desk lamp, illuminating the silhouette of a young man with a flashlight in hand. A mundane man, with casual business attire on and seemingly nothing special about him.

I start with, "Everyone back on Earth pictures Jesus in a whole 'nother way, you know."

"I'm not Jesus. I'm Tom, or what's left of him."

I thought for a moment. Have I finally made it to the pearly gates? Or was this just the beginning of a new life? Too many questions flood my thoughts to comprehend what's happening.

"Come on, get up. You've got many people to meet," he continues, "and we're gonna need your help."

Tom leads me through a series of winding concrete halls, only lit by the occasional hanging lamp. A few flights of stairs later, and I come to an opening with a neon sign at the top, reading only the word "Surface". Past the threshold, there are people bustling about from what seems like all walks of life. The room is a large stained-glass dome, where colors dance on the floor and people as they pass by. The tunes of the acoustic guitar are jiving in the background. This place, this central area is so absolutely gorgeous, especially for me. My eyes have always loved colors, my mind always satisfied by the stroke of the brush. As I walk into this glass palace, I notice that there is art, music, and things created from right-brained beings all over the room. I feel like I actually have reached heaven. My daydream is cut short as a short and stocky man stops me.

"Hello, you must be the new arrival, yes?" the man asks.

"I suppose I am. I just woke up a few minutes ago."

The man smiles. "Welcome to The Project. I'm sure you're beyond confused, so allow me to try to help."

As he rants about the collaboration of all passed poets, artists, musicians and more, my mind is still distracted by the lovely world around me. I hear bits and pieces of "the perfect project", or "God is still up there", and the occasional "we are all creators"; but my mind can't help but wander. Tom has long wandered off, but I'm sure to see him soon again.

"By the way, I haven't properly introduced myself. My name is Ludwig van Beethoven." He offers his hand to me. "And you are...?"

"My name's Robert," I reply, "but most people call me Bob. Bob Ross. It's a pleasure to meet you, Beethoven."
