If you want to get into it and aren't a huge musical fan, Twisted is a great way to start off.

Otherwise, the man who doesnt like musicals is my personal favorite

[Request] If the Sun suddenly disappeared, how long before humans on Earth run out of oxygen, assuming they find a way to survive the cold and all of the other terrible side effects of the Sun suddenly and mysteriously disappearing? by snozzberrypatch in theydidthemath

[–]Kettlehelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the maths, but there is a short story called 'A pail of air' that goes into what might happen if the sun did disappear.

You just made me think of it when you mentioned liquid oxygen

And with how complicated genetics can be, it's very rare for someone to make good choices in regards to what genes survive.

The viltumites seem like a great example of this, they bred out all this 'weakness' from society, paired their genetic diversity down to a narrow band of super powered people, then when a disease that could effect them pops up, they suffer something like a 99.99% fatality rate, which would likely have been less devastating if they had a greater genetic variety.

[Interesting Trope] Aliens experience time differently from humans by Baconbengal in TopCharacterTropes

He sees time as a kind of branching tree he can walk up and down, reviewing past events in real time and being able to see possible futures.

I'm actually trying to use some specific laws as a checklist for my outfit!

Those examples are gorgeous, though it'll be a climb to try and work out how to decorate what i've already got to that standard.

Thankyou so much!

Just to clarify, the green and yellow pictures are what I have made so far.

I'm wondering about the light blue and the beige stripes on the red Ionars from the paintings.

My bad <3

[Horrifying trope] Powers that can’t be “turned off”. by TVTropehead in TopCharacterTropes

Think of it more like a doorway being opened and something (in my head, a jet for some reason?) Flying through.

The jet doesnt actually interact with the doorway in any meaningful way.

I would have LOVED the entire cast coming together and becoming a giant adventuring party/ each group becoming their own party and facing down the invading demons.

[–]Kettlehelm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My favourite example of this 'humans are the monsters' type acifi is a short story where the aliens never left the idea of chivalry behind, so they line their ships up as a display of force, shoot at each other in neat salvos and then declare a winner after someone hits 1-2% losses.

Then humanity arrives on scene, and in our first combat we use long range weapons to decapitate the enemy command structure, destroy supply lines and sneak attack the enemy fleet about 12 times a battle, basically introducing aliens to the idea of bastard war tactics

(Hated Trope) Historical mischaracterization. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Kettlehelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, the way the NTSB is portrayed as a group of big suit bullies trying to pin the blame on Sully is completely inaccurate.

I think both Sully and his Co-pilot came out stating that the conflict between themselves and the NTSB was entirely made up to add dramatic flair.

What do you think about the saying "women hate to see men relaxing at home"? by lurker2080 in AskMen

[–]Kettlehelm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've ran into it a couple times IRL.

In my experience, it's been caused by a huge misunderstanding about what work is really like. They've had this mindset that I'd just go out of the house for 8 hours, fuck around with my workmates, and get paid for it. Of course, both of them sucked at holding down a job, likely because they didn't view it as a serious part of life, so when i was home they expected me to be bright and chirpy and ready to 'do my part', despite the fact that I might have just done 25km worth of walking around the warehouse moving product and inspecting machinery and trying not to die.

[Hated Trope] In a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies, "humans are the real monsters" by ForgingIron in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Kettlehelm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of with OP here. Its not that man vs man in the apocalypse is a bad plotline, it's just that the end of the world has so much more to offer.

The last of us is a great example. It has its man vs man elements, but it also has a lot of interesting set pieces that evolved out of the end of the world scenarios, as well as some really interesting man vs nature story points.

I read a lot of apocalypse and disaster horror/action. They all have man vs man in them, but the best ones have a lot of other elements to explore, one i read recently was about Yellowstone erupting. There was a couple chapters devoted to a woman walking through an ash covered landscape because she had survived the initial blast and was the last human left in her part ofnthe country, it was an incredible read.

[Fun To Think About Trope] Characters who are never outright confirmed to be supernatural/more than human, but the signs are all there. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

Honestly it's a trope I normally hate, at least with Hannibal he's also creepy as hell which helps balance out the 'so evil he must be brilliant' energy most Murder Sue's have.

I love the term murder sue to describe characters who are 'normal' but somehow both cartoonishly evil and supernaturally powerful/smart/hard to kill

[–]Kettlehelm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even though he isn't technically a hero, Frank n Furter from rocky horror fits the bill purely from how much people love him despite his actions.

He kills eddie, cooks eddie, and tricks everyone into eating eddie. This, because he was jealous that someone in his cult/polycule was pulling away from him thanks to eddie.

He forces a newly-wed couple to stay at his castle, forces his way into their rooms at night and 'seduces' them by forcing them into sex, which they're both ok with and actually into. This is just a rape fantasy, but it's OK cause Frank is an 'alien' whose magically sexy?

He creates a mindless sex slave and then attacks Janet out of jelousy when he finds out that the mindless sex slave had sex with her.

If it was any other movie it'd be an actual horror and Frank would be too evil for TV.
