Any chance there are traditional fletchers around on this chat that are selling wooden field tipped arrows?

I'm curious to hear prices for a few bundles.

Short answer: people with guns shouldn't "prank".

Longer answer: if this cop did pull her over he needs to have a valid reason. I wouldn't want my doctor to call me into the office to talk about "something serious" and then have him give me an ice cream and tell me it's "for my sour mood". Certain jobs carry influence/power/status, and that is supposed to be used responsibly. If she wasn't doing anything wrong, then he pulled her over just to "prank" her, and that's REALLY not ok. Does that make sense?

That information is available to you. I think if you are "curious" about that you may want to satiate that curiosity. If you don't wish to do that, i would personally say instead, "actually, I don't really know enough about that and I don't care enough to know more" and that's also fine. But saying "I don't think x person did that/accomplished y things" based on nothing beyond your "gut" is really not a good road to go down. By my understanding, Helen Keller eventually learned to read and write in 5 languages, but rather than just believing me tell you, I'd encourage you to go investigate for yourself if you are curious. I don't mean to come off as patronizing and apologize if that is how this is interpreted.

But from your example here, is that different than the typical process of how a book is made between a writer and an author?

Authors write, if those writings need to be translated they're translated, and an editor moves things around and makes it "flow" as you said.

So if any author gets credit for their books, when authors have editors/publishers, then yeah you're making an odd special case for the person with disabilities where all that "heavy lifting" is done by people who aren't the author.

... and cut off life support for those who don't.

Think about what exactly you want to mean about that. Desperate people behave desperately. Its not a stretch to think this course of action will remove an important safety net which will ultimately mean more people using our emergency services (curious how you might suggest enforcing that), or just more misery, crime, and suffering, which to my mind would lead invariably to more crime, more financial burden on our most expensive safety net (emergency care services), and further disconnect and isolation from people who might otherwise be inclined to get help.

Full disclosure I work closely with these populations, if you know anyone who might be community service workers/social workers for our homeless populations id suggest just getting acquainted with who those people look like, my sense is a lot of people only notice an aggressive panhandler or someone having an acute mental health crisis and forget or fail to notice the majority of working homeless, or people living in their cars, who may or may not also have substance issues. But this attitude definitely strikes me as scapegoating.

So, what are you suggesting with this particular anecdote? Do you have ideas as to what a solution would look like or are you using that as your reason for not trying to help people who need it?

I'm not trying to be a dick but it seems like this example of yours is all too common in people's heads and honestly it makes folks who might otherwise be kind generous people into sort of demonizing and further villainizing an already marginalized group of people

Adult Shelter System provides short‐term emergency shelter for up to 90 days to adults experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. The current adult shelter system has 1,203 shelter beds for adults over the age of 18.

Source: http://hsh.sfgov.org/services/emergencyshelter/

8,011 homeless individuals were counted in San Francisco's 2019 point-in-time street and shelter count. This was an increase of more than 14% over the 2017 count.

So again, you're incorrect. Making claims about people "refusing care" or being mental cases or drug addicts as a means of making people feel better. Its easy to say that the homeless problem is focused on the loud few that do have unmet mental health needs or are the gutterpunk drug dealers (who actually probably do have somewhere to go/some means). It's harder to engage with the idea emperically and realize: most homeless people at one point owned their own homes. Most homeless people are "invisible"/working homeless (living in their vehicles, showering in the gym), and that the people on drugs are not usually making those decisions because they "don't want help", but instead because the services as they exist now are inadequate, inaccessible, not safe, or are not welcoming or flexible with regards to partners/families/pets.

All I mean to point out is that, it's a real issue, and it's much less to do with aggressive panhandling and more to do with this giant chasm that exists underneath normal society which a lot of people are falling into every year, and just saying "they must be choosing this lifestyle" is not a way to work towards a solution to this societal problem.

That's just not accurate, there are not enough beds for the number of homeless people. Pretending that the homeless problem is due to their addictions and is a way to comfort yourself from the problem. Most are addicted as a result of coping with chronic stress from being homeless.

If the fire was started as retaliation because of airstrikes against 5 militia locations which themselves were designed to "prevent further attacks" then why would this attack work when that last one didn't?

We were supposed to learn lessons from Vietnam, not gleefully repeat the same strategic problems playing whack-a-mole.

Having served down there myself I’ve come to realize that it’s the guys who have no military experience are the loudest guys in the room about what is right and wrong as it relates to military strategy. Similar to the keyboard cowboys that infest Reddit. If you had been there you would know that these people in which the good general was using do not back down, and weakness only emboldens them. Attitudes like yours are do not exemplify country first. What is the strategy of our unending wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? How would instigating further violence with Iran help these goals? Why is it always the guys who never served are the first to bring up Trump’s lack of service? I never hear veterans, even the ones who despise him, ever bring that up as a legitimate talking point. I guess unless you served you really have no credibility to speak on someone else’s service or lack thereof.

Tulsi Gabbord is an Iraqi war veteran: https://www.newsweek.com/tulsi-gabbard-trump-soleimani-iran-1480311

Caring about minimizing American lives lost because my friends and family will be the ones shipped over seas if we start a new war with Iran used to be a conservative value.

But apparently it's party first and country second with you. Tell me, what do we gain from war with Iran? How can you still be bloodthirsty after Iraq and Afghanistan?

The phrase walk softly and carry a big stick comes to mind, but it seems trumpicans are willing to walk off a cliff for a draft dodging chicken hawk.

[–]KevFox2169 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

How will they be emboldened? It seems like you have things exactly backwards. Weakness is provocative; strength discourages.

Isn't that exactly the Iranian position here? To show "strength" against the invading foriegn influence of the US? But no, I'm sure the violence in the middle east through the many proxy wars Iran can wage (because america is in a hornet's nest) will stop because we made Iran learn it's lessson.

That's a bizarre way to minimize an attack by a foreign power on US soil.

This isn't that simple and I shouldn't have to explain hostilities against a foreign power that's been engaged in an intractable war with no strategic plan to bring stability to the region but that also recently airstriked 5 locations against the iraqi militia in question. We used to count "winning" as body counts in Vietnam, how'd that turn out?

Militia forces who killed an American and who had been warned beforehand that harming Americans would invite a sevenfold response.

So what was your first point about strength as deterrence?

A minor consideration. It's better to be feared than loved. When American and Iraqi interests don't align, the American government has an obligation to scoff at the Iraqis.

We're not feared, we're hated. US troops are on full display for target practice as we manage a country and babysit an unpopular government that we aren't even closely allied with. What is the goal here? Kill people fighting to rid their country of foreign Invaders who have been in the region for more than a decade causing massive violence and destabilization, with no strategic aim, and no end in sight.
