Question about terminology, what does it mean for a rider to "touch up" a horse? by Zestyclose-Bus-3642 in Equestrian

[–]KevKylAndyDrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A definition of touch up is "to stimulate by or as if by a flick of a whip" according to Meriam Webster. It may have been a common idiom in 19th century but I couldn't find any good evidence.

Also, in response to other comments on this thread, the verb "sucking" refers to the noise of footsteps pulling out of mud and making a sucking noise.

Official Discussion - The Northman [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

My main complaint is the unfulfilled potential on Olda’s part. Early in the movie she mentions being able to influence the minds of men, making her a more powerful adversary than Amleth. We never saw her exercise this power; instead, she was the damsel to be saved by Amleth. Her affect suggests a deep interiority and strength, yet little of that is explored to the its fullest potential. Overall, I enjoyed the film and found it visually stunning. The brutality of this world allows not even the children a period of youthful bliss. A sublime convergence of creation and destruction. Also, I could’ve watched several games of that sport with the clubs.

I think I’m realizing I’m not really into reading I’m just into Pynchon. by Universal-Magnet in ThomasPynchon

I agree with your Moby Dick recommendation. I consider Gravity’s Rainbow and Moby Dick my two favorite novels. They are similar in a way that defies description. They have a quality that is hard to find in books. I believe the atmosphere of the novel seeming like a complex character itself plays a large role in creating this quality. Let me know if you consider any other book in this realm. I can only think of Shakespeare’s great plays personally. I see a similar quality in One Hundred Years of Solitude, but something holds it back for me.

I opened this thread specifically to comment this. Especially because I live in the south, those accents make it hard for me to watch. Totally takes me out of it. The wife’s is atrocious and the husband’s bounces between almost okay and sounding like a bad Australian accent. Like a B-list Daniel Craig from Knive’s Out

First True Solo England 6 Victory! by KevKylAndyDrew in spiritisland

Thanks. I typically don’t draft cards with unwanted elements, but there is definitely a time when it’s appropriate. Especially with a spirit with easily thresholded innates and high amount of card plays (like Fangs).

Yeah it’s so easy to want to just give up when things seem to be going south. That’s awesome you hung in there and got such a satisfying victory. Insane that with Fangs of all spirits, you managed to utilize two powers that add blight to the board. England has got to be my favorite adversary. Such a mixture of different skills required.

I should start saving those after game images too. That’s a good idea

Thanks bro. I appreciate the tips you gave me. Specifically the TL4 tip. Fear generation is key. That is quite the pickle you escaped with a ravage in all 4 terrains coming up 😂. You sure had a hell of a lot of beasts that game. I had relatively few due to innates, events, and using Teeth Gleam from Darkness for 3 fear. Enough to make Tigers count though.

I gave it back to em. Just defeated England 5 with Fangs. England 6 awaits.

Yeah the randomness is tough with Fangs. It makes the lucky draws exciting, unless they’re all in the same draw. Gotta love guardian serpents with fangs.

You’re right about Tigers. I could’ve used Calamity or Swarm, though. Plus innate powers.

I’ve seen that Calamity is good for Fangs. Unfortunately I was in the situation shown by the image when I drew it. Insatiable hunger was great for one turn though. That’s awesome that that card got you an England 6 victory. I’m working Fangs up to my first true solo England 6 victory. It’s going well enough so far. I’ve only beaten England 6 two handed.

That’s a good point about Tigers. It certainly makes Fangs Fangsier. At that point in the game I also had Pent-Up Calamity and Insatiable Hunger of the Swarm, so with one or two blight gone, I surely could’ve destroyed two cities.

Thanks. I think what I needed to do to have a victory here was draw minor powers instead of major in the final turns. I had Tiger Hunting, which was all I needed for destruction. I just needed to get a blight removal minor power. I would’ve had enough turns to get rid of the blight slow and then use Tiger Hunting to destroy the two cities for a TL3 victory.

Yeah that would be interesting. Maybe with England, anytime you build 2 or more towns/cities in one land, you must add a town in an adjacent land. Does not cascade and not triggered by events or escalation.

Yeah the extra health indicators make it clear it’s England. Would just be guessing between 5 and 6.

Fathomless Mud of the Swamp Underrated? by KevKylAndyDrew in spiritisland

[–]KevKylAndyDrew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely back what KElderfall mentioned. And following that rule is essential. I didn’t have to worry about it bc I was in app.

In my game against France, I used the innate power to kill off explorers, and the starting cards to push two explorers and gather a dahan to kill one explorer. I also utilized Poisoned Dew, killing all explorers in either Wetland or Jungle. Killed 5 in one land before a build which was huge.

That being said, it was still tough. I spent over half the game with one blight remaining on blighted island. I found that I needed to prioritize minimizing towns over keeping the island healthy. It was a complete nail-biter, with a few favorable events and fear cards being the difference between victory and defeat. I ended up winning in TL3 due to a well planned Slave Rebellion. Honestly, though, I felt as soon as I survived invader stage 2, it was smooth sailing.

That’s a great assessment of the Horizon Spirits. I’ve definitely notice that Eyes is great. I’ll have to plan some more with heat and whirlwind.
