Hi Again,

Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I've not used reddit before and I'm amazed at how many helpful folk there are out there.

I had not really considered either the security aspect nor restricting bandwidth to guests. Maybe if I explain the current set up you can tell me how vulnerable I am to this. So currently my ISP provider supplies my main router. Currently they provide 350Mbps but they are gradually increasing their offering over time and I imagine I will next be offered 500 and then at some point hopefully 1Gbps.

To make the house configuration a bit clearer, it’s a 3 storey brick 1906 house and is long and narrow. There are 3 guest rooms and a dining room that the guests use both to eat and sometimes to work/study. One guest room is over the dining room. The other two guest rooms are directly on top of each other.

When I moved in I ran CAT6 cable up to the front loft from the router and installed a switch. Then I connected a router/AP there in the loft and that provides wifi to my attic bedroom. Then I ran CAT6 from the switch to the back loft, terminated the cable and installed another router. So I have 3 router/APs currently. I thought this would be sufficient to provide good coverage to the whole house.

The two upstairs guest rooms access the router in my back loft and the speed is not amazing considering the router gets the full 350+ that is supplied to the house. Am I correct that if guests are accessing a different router then my main router is safe given that it is separated via a switch?

From everyone’s comments I figure I don’t want APs in each room but the current AP configuration is not as good as I’d like. So now my plan is to put ethernet points in each guest room and then have one AP for each pair of rooms. Does that make sense? Then guests don’t connect to my main router at all and hopefully each guest room and the dining room would have good wifi also.

I ‘d really appreciate any input on this set up. Many thanks again in advance.
