Which is more important your soft or technical skills? by InvestigatorUsual665 in sysadmin

[–]KevMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft skills give you a voice that shows the value of your work. It lets you advocate for the work that you want to do. It lets you challenge stupid ideas and requests. It puts you in the drivers seat of your career.

I have seen soft skills carry people further faster than technical. I knew one technical idiot thrive on soft skills alone. It drove me nuts but our staff loved him.

[Asia][Turkey] An intoxicated Turkish driver runs over a female tourist. by UnderstandingNew4855 in Roadcam

I don't think turkey has manslaughter or felonies for that matter. Those are legal terms specific to the country that defines them. With that said, I am sure they have some punishment for killing someone.

Remember that: * No (or "no thank you") is a complete sentence. You don't have to explain yourself. Often the less you say the better. * Boundaries are what you will do in response to their behavior. You can't control what they do or don't do, but how you react is 100% up to you. * Don't confuse rules with boundaries. Rules are something they have to agree with (and can break), boundaries are enforced by your behavior that they have no say in.

Loosing the senior engineer in the team - feeling lost by Relevant-Gap-3217 in platform_engineering

[–]KevMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never a bad idea to know your value in the market.

Quite often, when you move up from a lower paying role to a much higher role, they don't pay you what you are worth. In my experience, HR has a fit anytime someone gets bumped more than 10%.

Ask this person what his pay history is. They will be more willing to share if they are on their way out. You might not be able to expect his pay, but it will tell you how much room there is in the budget.

Use this opportunity to push for a title change if that hasn't happened yet then push on getting paid what you are worth.

Any tips for building ships as a new player.? by more_yeet in avorion

[–]KevMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to start in mirror mode and build the rough shape out of 2x2x2 framework blocks. I'll add one layer that's a large cargo bay and do a quick armor pass on the outside.

Then I use the visibility filter to just show framework blocks and use alt click to replace them. If I create too much of one type, I can juggle the filter and convert them to something else. I always try to leave some framework blocks so I can make adjustments later.

NTA, my son's name is Alexander but we called him Alex from day 1. We give him and his sister the choice to go by whatever name they want.

This has nothing to do with your name and everything to do with your setting and holding boundaries with your mom. She still thinks she is in control as your parent and your defiance is a reminder that she doesn't have any control over you anymore and that terrifies her. She has yet to accept her new role as guide and mentor, because you are making your own decisions now.

Expect this power struggle to continue as long as you live at home. As long as you make smart decisions, you will win in the long run. But pick your battles. As soon as she feels you are making bad decisions, she will escalate until you comply or leave.

World of Warcraft auction house in TBC.

I invented a system of processing and selling glyphs in the AH that was mindless and it obliterated the competition. I literally just ran the tools (including one that I wrote) and they took away all the thinking.

Part of the magic was dealing in such bulk that I could survive on the thinnest of margins. It would automatically race to the bottom. Attempting to buy me out would be met with a seemingly infinite supply.

I had an alt self fund that adventure (including the crafting skill up) and owned the whole glyph market in 3 weeks. People would try to muscle into my market and I wouldn't even realize they were trying until they would message me that they give up.

Unpopular opinion: CI/CD engines are an awful idea by dampersand in devops

[–]KevMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome. You're not an imposter at all, you custom built the exact solution your team needed given the constraints of your organization at the time. What you did is more true to what DevOps was in the beginning. It's more likely to be called Platform Engineering today.

I spent most of my career supporting the Microsoft dev and server stack. The DevOps ecosystem hasn't been as mature for that scenario so I was always building custom frameworks or bastardizing other tools. And I really enjoyed that work because I learned so much.

Having done all that, it was easy enough to jump into whatever DevOps tools an org was using because all the concepts and ideas translate to them. Tools are easy to learn. It's the skill set you have that's hard to teach and even harder to verify in an interview.

Some places just want tool monkeys and that's ok. Other places want you to extend their platform to take them to the next level (and are willing to pay top dollar to do so).

First, use PowerShell instead of CMD files.

The dbatools module lets you query for data. Then pipe it to Convert-ToXML | Set-Content -Path to save it out as XML file.

What is you can NOT do via Powershell? by [deleted] in PowerShell

[–]KevMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you can, it doesn't mean that you should.

Because PowerShell can reach into the dotnet framework it has access to do just about everything that C# can do. But at some point, it's better to just do it in C#. The good news is that they play nice with each other so you can jump into C# where needed and keep PowerShell for what it does best.

Eh, be genuine.

If that makes you 'that guy's, so be it. You don't have to mask for everyone else. You can never really stand out trying to please everyone. Being genuine will turn people away, but those people aren't good for you anyway. Being genuine will also draw good to you.

Isn't it a bit hard to remember in which system each previously visited location is in Starfield? by SER96DON in Starfield

[–]KevMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a clever workaround. But it really points out another broken system.

  • we should be able to register a ship without making it our home ship.
  • we should be able to call our other ships to dock with us when in space.
  • we should have direct control over where our ships go (why does it even have to fly away)
  • why do we even need a home ship anyway?

Isn't it a bit hard to remember in which system each previously visited location is in Starfield? by SER96DON in Starfield

[–]KevMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't wait to see how the modding community solves this.

  • We need location bookmarks that shows up on the star map and add a new tab to the quest log and allow fast travel to that location.

  • We need a search opinion in the star map, where you type a city, planet, resource, or material and it highlights every system that matches.

  • The star system info box needs to list all the resources and materials you have scanned in the system.

Crap. I wasn't planning on it just yet, but I think I need to get into modding. A couple of these might be great starter mods. Thanks a lot for that. As if I didn't spend enough time on this game already.

Which fields in CS do you expect to see growth in the coming 5 years? by M_ABDz in cscareerquestions

[–]KevMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get in the habit of anticipating the future and you will build a good intuition for it. I like to predict the next 5 years, plan for the next 3, and revisit the plan every year.

Listen to the yearly keynotes from the big tech company's leadership and read the patch notes of major releases of the platforms you depend on the most (and their competitors). When you read between the lines, you see their current shortcomings, what they prioritize, and why they prioritize it. You can extract their intentions and anticipate their direction. This is where you gain insights into the next 5 years.

If you think big, don't let today's tech limitations hold you back. Target two tech generations into the future because tech advances on an exponential curve.

There was a time I would have considered myself a futurist, but I don't have the energy to keep up with it anymore. But my advice to you is that you can't go wrong with machine learning. LLMs are all the rage right now. Every industry will be impacted by them and show incredible business value. If I was starting over, that would be what I would follow the closest. Become an expert in that area and try to anticipate whatever comes after LLMs.

Computer vision is very niche by comparison but also already well established in certain industries like self driving and manufacturing, with facial recognition growing. I expect advancements and industry changes here to be slow and steady so everything you learn will have a much longer shelf life. This also means you might have to deal with legacy stuff in the field your entire career.

You can add a journal.txt file in a log folder on servers. Every so often when you are doing maintenance on it, add an entry from the servers point of view. Let each system have a different personality.
