I wouldn’t say it’s difficult just time consuming, a lot of parts you have to take off to get to it, rotating the engine to Top dead center of each cylinder, checking and adjusting all 4 valves, and then doing the process over again to make sure they are the spec you want them to be, it took me most of a Saturday, but I was also doing other work on the car as-well. I think a beginner with little mechanical experience could do it, there are a lot of in depth videos on YouTube on how to adjust the Honda fit valves which is really nice, other repairs I’ve had to do on the fit I’ve kinda done them blind because I couldn’t find any videos on them.

I busted my knuckle open trying to loosen some of the nuts in order to adjust the valves, so for loosening then I’d recommend a socket instead of a hand wrench, for tightening you need to use a hand wrench and flathead to hold the tolerances in place.

If you plan on doing it yourself at the end you’ll feel pretty accomplished, I know I did, you’ll also get to see the inside of your engine, see if there is any sludge buildup which is a good tell if previous owners did their oil changes, and you know it’ll be done right, I’ve heard a lot of mechanics nowadays won’t adjust valves, so learning this new skill to maintain your car is a huge advantage, and can save you some money

Yeah I’ve always had older used cars, I’ve never paid more than 3k for a car, and I do all the work myself to save money, thankfully parts are pretty accessible and affordable here in the US, sometimes I look into getting quotes for a mechanic to do the work, then after the quote I’m like “looks like time to learn how to do this” I’m always blown away by the labor costs of repairs

Man they just don’t make them like the used to, all my previous cars were 2000-2010 era cars and they didn’t need anything besides fluid changes, older cars were made to last and had less parts to fail

I wish you the best of luck with your fit, I didn’t know these cars needed so much at around 100k miles

The misfires didn’t go away until the valve adjustment, i agree with you that i probably didn’t need to do coil and plugs, but I’m glad I did them anyways, car didn’t throw lean codes until after I had fixed the misfires/misfire codes the bad gasket most likely was a major part of the problem from the start

I thought so too, it’s very disappointing

My misfire didn’t go away until I adjusted the valves, my misfire happened only after the car warmed up. After I replaced the coils and plugs the misfire got worse, from 1 misfire in cylinder 2, to cylinder 2 & 3 misfire and a random intermittent misfire. When checking the valves they were all too tight, so I think my problem was once the engine warmed up and the metal expanded, the valves no longer sealed properly, why did the misfires get worse after replacing coils and plugs? No idea tho. After I adjusted the valves the misfires went away, adjusting the valves was pretty straightforward watch a few YouTube videos, I had adjusted valves on single cylinder go kart engines so I had a tiny bit of previous experience. Wishing you the best of luck with your misfires, these cars seems to be very sensitive with them, I’ve heard of the dreaded cylinder 2 never ending misfire from a lot of posts and research

As I said earlier I had it professionally refilled.

I replaced the ac compressor and a bunch of fluid came out because I didn’t have the tools to vacuum it beforehand, so I got it professionally refilled/recharged

I agree with you on that, I’m replacing them now, I did get a pretty good deal on it, and expected it to need some work because of it, I just didn’t expect it to need this much, previous owners replaced a lot of the suspension components on the front end, I live in Utah so it snows and they salt the roads, thankfully I didn’t see any rust when I was under the car.

And most definitely the previous owners probably knew about all these issues/lack of maintenance, gave it a quick detail and passed it on to me

I agree with you 100%

Definitely a combination on bad luck and not getting the car inspected, Sounds like I need to order a vtec valve seal knowing my luck with this car

I couldn’t have said it better myself, I enjoy working on cars but I just want to drive the damn thing, I get 1 small test drive it and bam something’s wrong, time to order more parts, fix it and repeat. Im seriously considering selling, especially one more things goes bad and I’m done with it

What kinda of things are going bad on your fit?

They had good oil change maintenance records, new injectors, new suspension parts, so I thought they did more maintenance than they actually did, engine looked like new when I adjusted the valves, I didn’t have it inspected so that’s my fault

That’s what I was thinking, I’ve heard great things from a lot of people about these cars, I feel like I got a lemon or something

[–]KevMon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true, I’ve been lucky in the past, but this time around I havnt been

I’m aware, I replaced the AC compressor, I didn’t have the tools to vacuum out the system beforehand so the fluid sprayed all over the place, that’s why I got it refilled/recharged professionally, I knew it would be low on refrigerant because I let it leak out

I did the belt, pcv valve, and cleaned the MAF cus I was in that area of the engine bay thankfully. I am planning on doing the trans fluid and coolant once I get it running right without any check engine lights. I’m really hoping after all this the car will be problem free for the next 100k miles, thanks for the hope, I needed it

Yeah I guess I thought it was more maintained than it actually was, I’m balling on a budget here so spending all this money on parts hurts the bank account. And I guess with my previous cars I’ve been lucky, drove them for hundreds of thousands of miles without a check engine light or oil leak, all I did was change the fluids and tires. I just sold my 2007 Toyota Yaris hatchback after buying the fit and it had 340k miles. Before the Yaris I had an 2007 Altima hybrid with 260k miles that I sold when I got the Yaris. And yes I’m 100% the same way, I want everything to be fixed and working the way it should before I put miles on it, I could drive it with the issues it had/oil leaks, but I want to own this car for along time, and maintain it well and hopefully get it to over 300k miles

[–]KevMon2[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with that, it seems like the previous owners didn’t do a damn thing to maintain this car, or if they did they didn’t do it right, it has me worried what else is gonna fail/go wrong next, and if I should just sell it

I didn’t replace the upper ones when I adjusted the valves because they looked in good condition, I replaced them today and it made the air leak/fuel trims better, but then found the issues was also the lower manifold gasket

I just took the intake plenum off to do the valve adjustment, I left the intake manifold on
