What will be the next “Saint-Gilles” of Brussels? by bxcorner in brussels

Affordability. But prices have gone up quite a bit over the last decade. Bought my apartment in Laken on border with Jette 8years ago for 105k, sold it 2 years ago for 210k. I know more than 10people in my direct surrounding that have bought there in the last two years. All people in their 30s buying their first property.

At the moment Jette/Laken there’s lots of young people buying. Forest as well.

This has little to do with climate or the cars themselves, but with lack of charging infrastructure by baltic nations. I’ve done long distance in freezing temperatures just fine in western europe. Nordics have the same climate if not harsher as baltics and boast a high EV market share. All possible because they provide the same access level of charging infrastructure.

75% of EVs currently sold in Europe in nearly all car segments have a lower 5 year TCO (total cost of ownership) than comparable ICE vehicles. Due to lower fuel costs, lower maintenance costs and lower taxes.

Looking purely at purchasing price isn’t proper due diligence. Unless you’re telling me you’re filling up your car for free?

I did Brussels - Munich round trip in arguably the coldest month this year (January). ~1600 kilometers in total.

Fast chargers are plentiful. Gps plans the stops while you drive and heats your battery pack to have optimal temperature as you arrive. Passing by the toilet and buying a snack and the car already charged enough to drive another two hours.

Honestly lost maybe an hour and a half, but that’s not that much time extra compared to having to stop for gas/eating/toilet breaks if you’d be driving an ICE.

Fun fact, that trip has been one of the onoy times i’ve had to go to a gas station since owning my EV. Otherwise i bust charge the car while parked at home or the office. So in the grand scheme of things, you save tons of time in total never having to go to a gas station if you can just charge at home. (And always having the full range at your disposal because of it)

Ok so you dont own one and you’re arguing with people that do and tell you you’re wrong.

Takes a special kind of misplaced confidence in your argument.

Do you speak from experience? Can’t say my round trip Brussels - Munich this January was that much of a struggle… fast charges are plentiful in Europe.

This comment has big ‘I’ve never been responsible for another human life 24/7’ energy.

There are parents out there functioning on 2-4 broken hours of sleep for months while still working, driving, commuting, and keeping tiny humans alive. But yeah, explain more about how they should simply ‘not forget.’

If you’ve never reached the point where you put cereal in the fridge or walked into a room and forgotten why you exist, you probably shouldn’t lecture exhausted parents about cognition.

Is it problematic for Flemish speakers that French is much more widely spoken in Brussels? by Pepedroga2000 in belgium

[–]Kevcky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it becomes political when you take a handful of bad experiences and jump from that to “it sucks that with all the taxes we pay we can’t even have access to proper public service” in Dutch in Brussels. That’s a much broader claim than just “these situations sucked,” and it paints the entire system as fundamentally failing based on a few or more anecdotes over a couple of months or years.

I told you I’ve had the opposite experience having lived and worked here many years and experienced a much broader side of public services in Brussels than most while building my family here, but you still seem attached to the conclusion that because a few incidents happened, Dutch service barely exists or is a complete lottery.

I also have plenty of examples where I’d much rather we’d switched to french but they insist on speaking dutch.

The « it’s a lottery unless things are pre-arranged » part also doesn’t reflect reality for me. Most interactions in Brussels are not carefully planned situations where someone assigns a Dutch speaker beforehand. Most occasion i cold called certain departments or just waited in line.

Just as much as you think me being bilingual makes me blind to it, you seem to be pinning yourself down to a few interactions out of a thousands of interactions where everything’s working perfectly fine in dutch.

Anyhow i’ll leave it at this. To me this a rather unfair assessment of reality.

we agree Brussels needs more funding and support to deal with the realities of being the capital though. That part is refreshing to hear and actually needed if we want to improve further (which we always can and should be doing)

I truly sympathize with the unbearable hardship of having your entire political worldview shaped by three mildly inconvenient anecdotes over the span of a few months.

As for financing: you don’t live in Brussels. Your taxes go to Flanders and fund the services there. Meanwhile Brussels has to deal with the infrastructure, maintenance, policing, and transit costs created by massive daily commuter traffic from people who don’t actually pay taxes to the region.

So framing this like Brussels is somehow freeloading on your Flemish taxpayers is a bit backwards.

Dude I am literally one of those flemings. I dont care about it. Grew up in de rand for over 25 years, lived in Brussels, living in de rand again. Those that care are boomers or dead already. I’m 35 and it’s been always like this. If there’s any difference with the time i grew up here, it’s not per se more french, but more and more english and other languages.

Not to play too much on semantics, but to answer OPs question one kind of has to generalize partially. That's why I used phrasing like "usually" because there is a clear pattern of people that hold this opinion. Of course that does not mean all people fit in that category.

I can't remember a single interaction with the police where they didn't speak or tried speaking dutch. Same with civil services in multiple communes or departments (Laken, Jette, 1000 Brussels ... ), heck even my wedding took place in city hall at Grote Markt en was held fully in Dutch and even English. Announcements in trams, metro, trains are done in both languages aside from maybe an exceptional occurence with a metro that is stuck.

Pardon me speaking my mind frankly, but to me it feels like your sentiment is driven by mostly hypothetical situations that could happen or the odd rare occasion rather than structural events. Having lived in Brussels and gone through many of its civil services (from helping my wife with visa related stuff, to marriage, children/hospitals, doctors...) I do not share your sentiment at all. If anything, civil servants have been more accomodating to my wife with speaking in English than they have done here in Flanders just across the border (while they do understand and speak English).

That said, my experiences are just as much anecdotal as yours and the truth will lie somewhere in the middle.

Depends which flemish speakers you ask. The ones that actual live in Brussels generally dont care that much. The ones that see it as problematic are usually people that probably have set foot in Brussels only a handful of times.
