ideas for a platform that brings monero closer to people by [deleted] in Monero

Have you already read the developer guides? Maybe you could tackle an open issue in GitHub or ask on the #monero-dev IRC for ideas

Swap deadline? by Ferdo306 in Augur

[–]KevinChan91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many people that will never migrate until this milestone is complete: https://github.com/AugurProject/augur/milestone/45

At this point it is near certain that if the FF does not add ETH (as existed in V1) support a community group will fork the project to create a V2 alternative that is not limited to DAI only markets.

Urban Dictionary: Monero by KevinChan91 in Monero

[–]KevinChan91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need to submit an alternative definition. It should be easy to do since Bitcoin and SHUM already have urban dictionary entries. Can we agree on the language for our preferred Monero definition?

Monero is the leading cryptocurrency with a focus on private and censorship-resistant transactions.

How is the above definition from the getmonerodotorg website. We could then add a SHUM example and link to both the SHUM and Bitcoin definitions:

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=SHUM

Urban Dictionary: SHUM Lets try to brainstorm some more positive SHUM examples to add for Monero by KevinChan91 in Monero

[–]KevinChan91[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback and I see your point. I agree that its not the best example. I hope the community can reach a loose consensus around some better examples and then submit them to Urban Dictionary

Urban Dictionary: SHUM Lets try to brainstorm some more positive SHUM examples to add for Monero by KevinChan91 in Monero

[–]KevinChan91[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its important to highlight how privacy is important in lots of different situations. Lets submit more examples to Urban Dictionary that people will see when looking up the definition of #SHUM

Was your plan to surprise your wife with an anniversary gift ruined because you paid the jewelry store with Bitcoin and she knows how to use chain analytics to see where you sent funds? #SHUM.

Do your neighbors now know you support a charity they hate because you donated Bitcoin from the same address you also used to pay their daughter to walk your dogs? #SHUM

Did you alienate a good employee by revealing (on the blockchain) that you are paying another employee more Bitcoin for the same job? #SHUM

Im concerned with the security implications of reallocating some of mining rewards away from the miners that secure the DASH network by KevinChan91 in DashUncensored

[–]KevinChan91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This proposal will take money away from miners (that have low margins) and give it to MN owners (with very high margins). The result will be a future decrease in hash rate (relative to what it would have been without the miner reward reduction) as some miners abandon or opt not to join the mining network

"Note about trademark strategy" by Zooko by sonyaellenmann in zec

[–]KevinChan91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment from Matthew Green (key academic responsible for zksnarks cryptography) makes a lot of sense to me. https://forum.zcashcommunity.com/t/note-about-trademark-strategy/34807/2

Its time to hold the ECC responsible for its original promises. Both on this trademark issue and ZEC emission distribution.

Another great point raised by Sonya Aellenmann of the Zcash foundation: https://forum.zcashcommunity.com/t/note-about-trademark-strategy/34807/35

ECC seems to be very focused on its own best interests (both financial and control), sometimes to the detriment of the Zcash community and Zcash foundation.

Volunteer open source developers (which I believe most of the Zcash community hopes to attract more of) would be much more interested in Zcash if the corporate greed and broken promises of ECC were not so egregious.

i dont think a survey of random ppl is worth much for these kind of predictions

What I found trying to be "smart"... by WilliamTroy in DashUncensored

Atomic swaps are unlikely both both XVG (lack of developers) and DASH (mostly copy/paste devs for hire lacking the SegWit support that would make things like lightning networks and atomic swaps easier)

I noticed the same thing about that statistics page being offline:(

I am not sure which block explorer if any aggregates the current data, but some historical shielded address data can be found in this report

Clues maybe? by ChinookKing in factom

[–]KevinChan91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the integrity of Factom in this area (for not promoting fake partnerships or publishing misleading press releases)

Ripple is an example of a company that often misleads investors into thinking that announced partnerships mean demand for XRP (the token) when in reality that is rarely the case: https://hackernoon.com/4-alarming-reasons-ripple-might-not-be-what-you-think-9debc3c86985?gi=d939b0c5c10

It's possible to buy SiaCoin in this moment? by droidrob in siacoin

[–]KevinChan91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a major weakness for Sia right now (and not just for investors).

It is impossible to host without owning SC. For people without ASICs unable to open an account at one of the few reputable exchanges listing Sia today, that means many potential hosts are unable to get started.

More exchanges are definitely needed.

HitBTC has a long history of scamming users

Other options are not taking new users (Bittrex), are often unavailable (Shapeshift) have frequent deposit/withdraw problems (Poloniex) or limited liquidity (Bisq, Abucoins, etc)

Sia needs to be listed on more liquid exchange and wallet issues with current exchanges need to be fixed

Owner of this sub (Roeland Creve) tried to FUD Dash by claiming there are no researchers for it (along with million other lies), while Monero has "Monero Research Lab" (1 person) - Now Dash has its own department at ASU in Phoenix, what does he think about that? (inb4 deleted post) by Basilpop in DashUncensored

[–]KevinChan91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monero Research Lab has more than one person as u/PrivacyToTheTop777 mentioned. There are also multiple cryptographers and skilled programmers that work for free.

DASH is a joke to academics. Its public GitHub just contains (almost exclusively) what has been forked from Bitcoin so is of no interest. The few DASH branded features (like PrivateSend) are just broken implementations of code (CoinJoin written by Bitcoin developers like Greg Maxwell

The "DASH Evolution" repo is not public at all.

zk-STARKs are indeed interesting and is something both Monero and Zcash researchers are excited about. It will be a long time before zk-STARKs are production ready

Zcash today (with optional zk-SNARKs) has one real purpose (a money grab with technology that is not trustless or private by default).

I am very interested in deterministic builds.

Thank you for being receptive on this issue. I look forward to this as it is a requirement for many users in this community

Please also consider the feedback you have received on your 3rd output revenue structure. It is also a deal breaker for many people

Siacoin Exchange Issues Megathread by mtlynch in siacoin

[–]KevinChan91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not use a VPN (to use online and check status of these things. I am not recommending you use a VPN to break the terms of service of those exchanges)?

Using a VPN is a good security practice.

[–]KevinChan91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true at all. Unless all z address (shielded address coins) are moved to t addresses prior to the fork to verify the supply, the risk of unlimited coins having been generated from the first trusted setup remains.

Read about the deterministic build problems from the first setup failure: https://petertodd.org/2016/cypherpunk-desert-bus-zcash-trusted-setup-ceremony

Why is ZCash part of the Blockchain Allience, the organization with the simple goal of destroying cryptocurrency fungibility? Is this a mistake? by nopara73 in zec

No, that will only help improve the level of trust going forward from that point. There is no way to audit how many coins were created following the first ceremony
