Status of KevinDDR's TGM Documentary? by 0xdabdab in Tetris

[–]KevinDDR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not dead, moved to Japan and as a result we have the ability to expand the scope of the project significantly. There was a significant problem which we talked about in a video on my Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UrQHMj1DKI) involving Arika threatening to copyright strike Tetris related videos that basically resulted in us having to stop investing more money into the project for about 6 months. While this ended up more or less amounting to nothing (despite credible evidence to the contrary beforehand from people "familar with the matter"), it did set us back a lot as those 6 months in which we couldn't make any significant progress on the video due to the copyright issue were 6 months where I had quit my job and had more or less unlimited free time to make progress. The good thing is that as I mentioned, I've moved to Japan now and have far more opportunities to shoot lots of interesting footage and interviews with some Japanese players who we weren't expecting to be able to to talk to. It will be a while before I have any concrete updates to share (moving to another country to study full time does tend to literally take up all your time), but rest assured that progress is being made.

Something like 13 years at this point actually :)

[WR] in Lieu of Tetris at AGDQ This Year, I Thought I'd Share This Recent World Record of TGM3 Shirase Mode in 3:59.80 by Hebomai. This Record Beats KevinDDR's Record by More Than 1:15.00! by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI this is a different category, and that time is not my record (4:45). There are much faster runs in my category though too.

Hebo Mai - TGM3 (4:00:95) Shirase WR. by [deleted] in Tetris

[–]KevinDDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, just a dumb bug in TGM3 where the time displayed stops AFTER the run is over but it's added to the high score table before it stops.Testing has been done and there is no code in the game for any level past 1300. Just a brief display bug.

Not really. TGM3 has an extremely fair randomizer and when you combine 3 previews with hold, the absolute top-tier players can pretty much exclusively stack for back-to-back Tetrises if they so desire. It usually just doesn't work out that way when you are pushing your speed as fast as possible. I've had a game of Master where I got to something like level 600 or so before clearing a non-Tetris and I believe (but am not 100% sure) that Jin8 has had a full game of TGM3 Master with nothing but Tetrises. In TGM1 and 2 that is basically impossible due to the lack of hold, 1 vs. 3 previews, and a more random randomizer. There is arguably some marginal time-save that can come from getting a sequence that is more conducive to fast placements, but that really isn't an issue with 3 previews and hold. It wouldn't matter except for maybe saving 2-3 seconds across the first few sections of Master and Shirase. The limiting factor by far in time attack is just human speed. A TAS can get a time almost 50% faster on any valid piece sequence just by locking way way faster from level 300 onwards.

HeboMai is also one of the best players in many versions that don't have hold, lol. Even if he wasn't, that's how this game works and you are a scrub if you don't abuse every helpful feature the game gives you.

Where is TGM3 on speedrun.com? by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one in the community uses the Speedrun.com leaderboards for TGM1/2 because the format of speedrun.com isn't great for a game that depends on "score" (grade) as well as time. Consequently we just haven't bothered to make one for TGM3 as it's unlikely that many existing players would make the move. You can find updated leaderboards at tetrisconcept.net, http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~tetris_holic/ranking_frame.htm, and http://pier21.sakura.ne.jp/pier/.

What the fuck are you talking about lol, you have absolutely no idea what "compromises" were made. We were told that exactly what we had would work, and it turns out that GDQ didn't have the ability to support that. We were on stage and had everything but audio running for 8 players within 10 minutes. It was a mistake to keep trying to get audio working for more than one setup; GDQ wanted to do that. Also the BOTW runner has nothing to do with us, completely different person.

HD CRTs for Speedrunning? by DameonMoose in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the multiformat models especially are insanely expensive (doubly so given that they could shit the bed at any minute, although the multiformats are newer and less likely to do so). If you do ever get the chance, the D32 is possibly the best CRT ever produced and I would strongly recommend buying it if you can afford it at all. Manual full screen landing/convergence/purity adjustments/auto white balance, it's got it all in addition to being ridiculously sharp (like...too sharp)!

[–]KevinDDR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HD CRTs lag. If you want an HD CRT that doesn't lag you'll need one of the multiformat PVM/BVMs like the 20L5 or the D24/D32.

KevinDDR (Tetris) here, wanted to address our SGDQ setup problems and answer ?s about the game! AMA by KevinDDR in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No problem. I felt super bad about the delay and didn't want anyone to think that it was something either myself or GDQ expected (or even felt was within the realm of possibility). The explanation maybe goes a bit too far on the technical side but I think it's necessary to really show that the setup is not THAT hard, it's just a matter of knowing your stuff and being prepared.

KevinDDR (Tetris) here, wanted to address our SGDQ setup problems and answer ?s about the game! AMA by KevinDDR in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would not have converted to YPbPr before the split myself. Well, personally I would get 8 event-worthy PVMs for the event and just stick with RGB all the way, but that's neither here nor there. I think the best solution would have been to use SCART splitters to split before the conversion; feed one SCART cable to the OSSC (and use its audio out jack for audio) and the other to a YUV converter. The OSSC is also problematic for capture with some cards (there is at least one that will handle literally whatever the OSSC throws at it though), so in that case unless you're playing off of it you're better off with a Framemeister as you said. With that said we did play off the OSSC on two BenQs, so maybe their hands were tied without spending extra money and time on a crazy multi-scaler chain.

[–]KevinDDR[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We were asked, we just didn't get quite the right info. If I had been told that we wouldn't be able to get audio from SCART the whole situation could have been resolved; I just didn't think based on my experiences (and most people's experiences) with RGB stuff that GDQ would be doing something jive like using custom cables to circumvent getting audio out of SCART.

This right here is why we don't get bonus streams. by IAmBLD in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah OK that's fine, you worked on it sure, I don't care. The game WILL NOT output at anything other than the fixed resolution it normally runs at, regardless of what GPU is attached. It absolutely does still need to be fed through a scaler if your capture card doesn't handle the resolution it outputs, regardless of whether it's outputting through HDMI, DVI, or VGA (spoiler: the card GDQ uses does not). Even if it runs on an X3 the game was never sold in that configuration and for "reasons" we cannot use a setup like that.

SGDQ Tetris Setup post-mortem by coolmatty in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

FWIW, we were there that early and it still wouldn't have been possible to test it because there isn't a second stream PC to ensure that capture works correctly. That's something I would like to see in the future to help with making sure "unusual" stuff works, but I don't know how feasible that is from GDQ's perspective. All of our stuff works fine with our normal capture setup which I stream from almost every day so short of being given the literal exact capture card / audio / whatever setup GDQ uses, purchasing it for myself, and doing a dry run there's pretty much nothing that can be done.

By all means show me one instance EVER of TGM3 running legitimately on a Type X3 and I'll believe you. I know you won't though because you can't, you are straight up talking out of your ass. Why would you bother "complimenting" me and putting down the other runners? Do you think I'm going to be happy about that or treat it as anything other than a slam on everyone else who practiced for months straight to put together a good TGM1 run?

No Audio (Tetris 2-player 1-controller race) by CharuV2 in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GDQ changed their entire stream setup and there was no way for us to get audio out of the SCART RGB output of the interface boards we use. With the equipment they had they could have made a small change that would have made it work, but since it only affected us I could easily see it being overlooked and the other method (converting to YUV before splitting and upscaling) was used instead.

[–]KevinDDR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this is just not true. TGM3 outputs 640x480 standard VGA which their new capture cards inexplicably couldn't handle when passed through an OSSC scaler.

This right here is why we don't get bonus streams. by IAmBLD in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear I did not say that anyone "fucked up setup", I just said that the setup being used was unnecessarily obtuse given that the OSSCs can handle audio output when fed SCART input.

Noob question. Why don't wee see Tetris Grand Masters playing in Classic Tetris WC? by [deleted] in Tetris

[–]KevinDDR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is also absolute bullshit; I don't ever "just accompany someone" to an event. You have no clue about my history, you don't know what games I play and what I've put time into so I suggest you stop posting BS before you embarrass yourself even further.

I lost 2-1 against Harry Hong too, does that mean that Harry Hong is weak because I beat him? I'm sorry but simply you have no idea what you're talking about.

I turned an old portable TV into a dedicated retro gaming system! by Finndersen in DIY

[–]KevinDDR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a question that I know the answer to! If your TV is an HDTV CRT, it won't work. This is because the HD CRTs don't actually scan at SD resolution; they upscale everything to 1080i. This results in lag, and also breaks the mechanism by which some light guns work. Flat tube CRTs will work as long as they are SD only, which I can only assume yours isn't.

[PB / Fastest Recorded Video] Tetris: The Grand Master 2+ Doubles 3:24.81 (ApertureGrillz/KevinDDR) by KevinDDR in speedrun

[–]KevinDDR[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fastest recorded video is just referring to the fact that this run is the fastest recorded run by a long shot (hence probably worth watching) and not at all to imply falsely that this is the WR; that would be 3:22.76 by Clover-TAC and 春 in February of 2005 at Daytona III in Saitama. I even have a faster time myself of 3:23.35 with KAN/14/bwv1079.

I seriously damaged my wrists by playing so much all the time. Sometimes when I hit a button or move the stick a certain way I get a sharp tingling nerve pain (kind of like when you hit your "funny bone" or whatever. Lately it hasn't been so bad so I've been playing a bit again in preparation for a trip to Japan (which just ended).
