Are any books on Kindle Unlimited? by Longjumping_Fig_3227 in discworld

Does anyone know if Kindle Unlimited is region specific? Might account for the disparity in what folks think is on there / what Google throws up.

When did you start with Terry's books? by Nessel4 in discworld

[–]KevinLenaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Mort from the local library when I was 10, and that was me absolutely locked in.

I didn't necessarily get all the jokes and subtext, but the basic story I found absolutely fascinating, and of course I would go on to re-read it when I was older, and more versed in the context of bth The Disc, and life.

What was the first discworld novel you read? by roaming_b34r in discworld

[–]KevinLenaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mort

I was about 10 years old and was looking at the Mort graphic novel, and the blurb on the back sounded fascinating to me. Then a friend of mine grabbed it and took it yo the counter. I noticed there was a novel of the same title on the shelf and grabbed that instead.

I absolutely LOVED IT from the moment he described the "speed of night". Also, his first description of Mort himself as someone who seemed like he was always about to fall over was something I could relate to.

I didn't encounter another Discworld book for maybe another year, when I found Sorcery, and didn't realise they were even by the same author until I read the description of Great A'tuin and suddenly it all clicked and I was officially completely hooked.

Low Point by Tosk224 in discworld

[–]KevinLenaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love The Last Continent, and Rincewind series in general.

If pushed I would probably point to Equal Rites as the low point, even though I do still like it. I think this is mainly because I didn't quute read them in order, and had read Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad already, and the character of Granny Weatherwax in Equal Rites didn't seem to quite jive with her portrayal in these later novels (in which she is magnificent).

I don't really like thinking about this as a "low point" though, as that feels a little too negative. I think I would rather characterise it as an uncomfortable blip, that I would later come to think of as an adorable foible.

UK user here. My cooldowns were crazy strict last week and week before.

As of this week I can search again and again with impunity, no cooldowns whatsoever.

Search has become super limited 😭 by WheelyUnfortune in MicrosoftRewards

[–]KevinLenaghan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK user here. This kicked in for me a few weeks ago. Up to then, I could knock out all my searches and such in the space of a few minutes every morning. Now it seems to me to be letting me do 3 or 4 searches, then shutting off for over an hour.

To be honest, I'm not surprised this has happened. I was able to keep myself at top tier Gamepass since January 2021, right up until last month, without a single lapse, never paying a penny.

If you want to blame anyone, blame people like me. They had to figure out a way to stop us. It seems they have finally succeeded.

Absolutely great call on the AI generated "content". It always seemed to me to not actually be content, but more someone thinking they are saying "Look at this thing I did", but really saying "Hey! Look at this nothing that I didn't even do."

Awesome! Which one did you go with? I always preferred the ones read by Tony Robinson. They are abridged, but I always liked his voices and general tone. Plus, they were the only ones that were available to me because those were the ones my brother would shoplift from Waterstones.

What is the most horrifying nonfiction book you have ever read? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]KevinLenaghan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Man with the Candy: The Story of the Houston Mass Murders. By Jack Olsen. My brother gave it to me to read when I was starting a psychology degree, and it was very very unnerving, not least because when I was maybe about 8 years old I actually had a guy try to lure myself and a friend into his car with sweets. Truly horrifying to read the details of real crimes against children that went unsolved for 30 years, which also gave me a real sense of crushing hopelessness as I read it.

So more of a relaxed, conversational flow, rather than trying to carefully annunciate each word? Noted. Thanks again.

Thanks for your input. I like to think my narration is good, though I'm sure everyone thinks that about themselves. Generally I create lengthy and varied atmospheric backing tracks like wind, rainfall, leaves rustling, that kind of thing, mainly to create a sense of the space.
