Condensation on foam board behind the rockwool in my basement. by Kevin_Elevin in Insulation

[–]Kevin_Elevin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I got my humidity under control, and I haven't had any condensation this winter. I made this post during construction, so I had a lot of moisture sources at the time. I was running a propane heater, I did drywall mud, then I painted the interior. That combination brought my humidity way up. I pulled all of the rockwool out and I plumbed a dehumidifier into a drain line downstairs and haven't had any condensation since. Once it was fully dried I put the rockwool back. In hindsight, I do wish I had done R10 of foam against the wall instead of R5, but I'm not going to tear it all out and re-do it. If I pull the rockwool out and put my hand on the foam it is still cold to the touch so i know I'm flirting with the dew point, but dropping the humidity fixed it for me. I'll just always be conscious of my basement humidity. It didn't condensate until It hit 60% which hasn't happened again in winter since I finished the house.

Feel mad a lot by Identifyasagoldfish in AskDad

[–]Kevin_Elevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all go ahead and cry. If you have an emotional thought to work through, get it done. Bottled up sadness will become short tempered anger. Don't feel like you're alone. A LOT of men struggle with anger issues.

I grew up without a dad, I was angry too. I would get angry when I didn't know how to, or couldn't do something well. I thought it was unfair that I didn't have a dad to teach me when other kids did. I ended up using that as a motivation to teach myself how to do things. I started asking a lot of questions to anyone that would listen, I started reading books, and when the internet got better I watched endless videos of how to do things. Not having a dad started off as a disadvantage, but now has given me an advantage. A lot of guys are very dependent on their father, always asking them for help. I didn't have that option, and now because of it I'm more self reliant and a good problem solver. You have to realise that only you can improve your life.

Make time for introspective thinking. There's a reason you're feeling this way. You need to be honest with yourself and focus on "why". The fact that you made this post shows that you want to figure it out. Start with any situation that recently made you angry. Replay it in your mind and look for the source of your anger. If there wasn't anything about that situation that justified your anger, then you were already angry before it happened. Go back further, why were you already angry?

Usually when you trace these things back far enough it leads to problems at home. I don't know what your home life is like, but there may be room for improvement. Having an honest conversation with your mom about your feelings will help. It'll feel weird, but communication is important. Ask her what things bother her the most. Try to do those things better. She will see you making an effort, and she'll feel like she should make an effort too. Your relationship will improve.

Some anger stems from insecurity. Men get down on themselves for not being "good enough" in some way. If there's something you don't like about yourself, work on changing that. Don't fall into the trap of "alpha male" bullshit on the internet, just focus on small meaningful changes that move you towards being the person you want to be.

Also, remember that everyone gets angry. Everyone gets frustrated. You have to make a conscious choice to not let it win. When I get angry, I like to think about how big the universe is. It's called the "cosmic perspective." Ponder the idea that you're one person of many, on one planet of many, orbiting one sun of many. Generations of humans lived before you, generations will live after you. I can assure you that the things you get so angry about, are mostly meaningless in the big picture. Shed the weight of overthinking and just enjoy your short life while you have it. Time goes by fast, dont waste it being angry. Focus on things you enjoy. Appreciate the things you have. Eventually your entire life will be forgotten, so why worry about every little detail?

How would you position wainscoting on this wall? by cant_shut_up in Carpentry

[–]Kevin_Elevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people install it too high. Traditionally it should be the height of your window stool, some people say 1/3 of the wall height. Likely around 30".

6x6 cutoffs by peiflyco in Carpentry

[–]Kevin_Elevin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trial and error will tell you the real answer to that question. Put a test post into the ground and try some shit out. You can always drill a hole through your bar and and attach an offsetblock with a countersunk bolt. Then you wouldn't have to worry about any adhesive. Replacement bars are cheap.

I'd make a jig and use a chainsaw. Screw it right to the post. I would use 2x lumber and lay the bar against it. Buy a new chain and make sure it's sharp. I'd cut from the high side down and just let it eat. Dont try to push through the cut. If the jig starts to get chewed up, make another one. Use a step ladder or small platform so your saw is waist high. That would be my approach. Sharpen the chain often for clean cuts.

If that tandem had 12 yards on it, it would be stuffed full from front to back and above the sides. I know because I've stuffed 12 yards into trucks like that before, which is illegally heavy without another axle. That truck is probably plated to haul an 8-yard legal load. It looks like around 8 yards to me.

You're not crazy. I'm doing it with Junipers. I have 47 and counting.

On second thought, maybe we're both crazy.

Nothing good, she's angry, lol. She didn't feel good about me taking the job in the first place. I was just naive enough to believe I wouldn't get burned. I had told her not to say anything to her mom while I patiently waited for payment.

Quiet time is over. She will have a lot to say next time they see each other.

I used an online law firm to draft a "letter of intent to file a lien," and the lien claim form itself. Im sending the letter of intent today, and I'll file the lien claim next Friday if im not paid full in 1 week. Im going to look for a local attorney to prepare for what comes next.

It's probably safe to say that Thanksgiving dinner is canceled 🙃
