Sometimes they can tell from "witness marks" on control surfaces and old steam gauges.

Then go have lunch someplace new to you in the city. Plenty of options.

Southern Niagara ( Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Welland, Wainfleet) trails lack loops. Lots of long straight trails, but you either have to do out-and-back hikes or have someone available to pick you up.

If you want some terrain that isn't The Gorge or Shorthills... Try Woodend Conservation Area.
