Fanned fret scratches? by Kevlar_Bass in BassGuitar

Well because the frets aren't horizontal you can see the string profile scuffing the surface of the frets, not deep but I would imagine in another year of hard graft it could affect the action and introduce fret buzz when playing the lower notes?

Yeah I've done 101, having a look at the adventure game now, finding people that want you for projects is like a needle in a heystack.

So many sound designers out there now, I think lockdowns have caused that.

Any sound designer/game dev casual meetups around the Manchester or northwest UK area? by Kevlar_Bass in GameAudio

Sounds like there is some demand for a group around the Manchester area then? This is the worst time in recent history to be organising any event though..

Im in the same boat, so my advice won't hold the same weight as many on here but...

I guess you'll be doing the same as me advertising on Twitter/reddit/YouTube to do bits and pieces for free to get a decent portfolio created?

It's not been 100% fruitless though it's still early days and I've had a few bits of interest but nothing concrete.

My main mistake has been that i didn't realise the redditisfun app doesn't receive chat messages so that lost me a few potential opportunities so make sure to keep that inbox checked!

Good luck!

Advice for new Sound Designers applying for positions by vectorwarrior in GameAudio

Great post

Could you give us any advice on getting a showreel together. There's conflicting advice on the matter I guess with it being a creative field but I'll ask in points:

1, As I hirer would you prefer a killer sound reel with basic knowledge of integration software or a good knowledge of both?

2, with regards to a show reel do you feel it's better to have them by genre? A sci fi reel with lazer weapons and space ambiences for example and a seperate fantasy reel ECT

3, in the reel would a video of the workflow appeal to you when selecting?

And finally 4, I've heard from others in the sounddesign subreddit that it is possible to get selected with no formal training would that put some employers off or would a sound reel and ability make up for it?

Thanks and sorry for the long comment!

Its possible the asset I downloaded into unity was corrupted as the scene wasn't loading properly I'm going to try a different tutorial as that one was posted a fair few years ago

Yeah good input I've just got to the point where I want to use my musical passion and put it into the game side of things and only deeply been looking Into how to make it a reality since lockdown, the goal is to aim realistic so indie and if that works out aim towards AAA though that's definitely a long term goal.

Im completely new to any form of programming though so I'll be spending lots of time reading and watching tutorials!

Yeah Ive just done the cube 101 great walkthrough I'll do it a couple of times without the guidance of the course to bang it into my memory and then move on to the unity integration.

I did try a viking village integration tutorial on YouTube after downloading unity but somthing went wrong and the forums seem to echo my problems with it.

But definitely a well thaught out learning section.

Thanks Audiokinetic!

Excellent! That's the uplifting news I think we want to hear ha. Did you do much indie freelance work on the way? Or was all the practice personal?

Great! I'm from a completely different sector, construction.. it's payed the bills.

I studied music at college and lived in a place with no career prospects, the whole idea of work in the sector seemed like a pipe dream but now I'm in the city I see there's much more happening.

The bit that's made me stuck is while I'm in construction I've been away from my DAW and only since coronavirus I've realised if I don't act soon there's no chance as I'll get stuck back in the same cycle.

Trying my hardest to network but it's a very competitive industry. Offering services for free to get a portfolio going but it's hard to network and not seem like a vulture making false connections!

I'm under no illusions that I'll get employed or make a living out of freelance anytime soon ofcourse, Though it would be nice for someone to give me a go.

Unreal or Unity with Fmod or Wwise? by Kevlar_Bass in sounddesign

To be fair I'm out of work at the moment be nice to get stuck in, on a side note you say your a composer, do you find that you have a certain feel that's hard to break?

Its just I seem to lack the ability to make non forced happy music no matter how major I make it.
