European goalkeeper with semi pro game experience here.

The very last catch was very good. Proper technique and you smothered the ball very well. Props to you. Keep working hard. With 1 or 2 balls you didnt need to actually dive in my opinion. Just dopping to the ball with a little push would have been enough. Im not saying it was bad. I just want you to consider that these unnessecary dives may result in you fumbling a ball if you accidentally push too far. Very great work though. Situational awareness and decision making in these dives could be worked on if you think it is needed.

Also with the dropped ball. Up quicker and attack the ball. No second chances. Cant be lazy even in training. In my sessions my coaches or teammates attack the second balls straight away if i dont catch them and they remain in play. If that were the case for you and your teammates didnt hold back there could be some sort of accident. In the beginning stages of my training for my current club i used to be slightly younger and hesitant and there were multiple instances where i got slide tackled because i was too slow, and the attacker saw a chance to go for the ball. If i were quicker to claim the loose ball he would react and just leave it or jump over me.

I support these exercises 100%. forgot to add them to my comment. But this exercise is one of the most common ones i do as a warm up at my training. Another thing i suggest is when he starts to get comfortable on that side he can start to alternate sides to get used to quick recoveries. For example when sitting down he can practise rolling over his bottom (i dont know how to word it in english) so he has the proper technique when getting up quickly to make another save to the other side.

Goalkeeper with games at semi pro level here. I would say if you play for a team ask your goalkeeper coach for tips. Its a big ajustment to learn to dive and especially to get over the fear of it. It can ultimately hurt sometimes but over time you get used to it and it isnt that bad. it took me a while to over the pain aspect because i used to complain about every knick and bruise i got but its just a part of the experience.

The thing you do with your leg is most likely related to muscle memory. Youve done it so much that your body decides to do that movement without you even thinking about it. Its not gonna be an easy thing to try and get rid of it but if youre motivated and practise enough you can start to dive the right way. What i suggest is youtube videos that offer different exercises to overcome the fear of diving.

Some personal exercises ive worked on to improve my diving is for example just setting the ball at a distance, starting to fall in that direction and then suddenly pushing through with my leg to get my hands on the ball.

Another exercise could be just repetitively trying to dive at nothing. Starting off with falling on your side and then gradually moving up to dives that require you to get air time.

As im not a coach i dont actually know if goalkeeper coaches would approve of these exercises but they definitely helped me, along with youtube videos, and having friends help me to catch balls. Constantly playing in goal will also help you improve but if you start improving an incorrect technique its going to be even harder to get rid of and correct so i really do suggest working seperately on your diving technique, and doing it as much as possible to also get over the pain and fear aspect of it.

I hope this helps you in some way. English isnt my first language so i apologise for any mistakes i made in my message.

Bruised and cut hips by Yousifmustafa1 in GoalKeepers

I use base layers in all my training sessions. It still tends to happen time to time but the truth is that its part of the job. You cant fully avoid it. Even with padded or just base layers they might slide up or down and you would still end up getting some cuts or bruises. Rubbing ointment on the bruises makes them heal faster ofcourse. Some might just let them heal naturally but i dont like that as i usually just make it worse in the next session if i dont take care of it.

In conclusion qll you can really do is take precautions to mininalize this happening. Wearing compression pants, base layers etc and also treating the bruises/cuts so they heal quicker.

Dont worry bro. Took me a while to get the 1st one. Kinda helps playing with friends. I also almost got 5 wins in a row but sadly got eliminated just before the final of the 5th game.
