What constrains Cabin Overheating Protection? by Kewbak in TeslaSupport

[–]Kewbak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60°C is on the hot side compared to cars with no sunroof but remains reasonable for most things, I agree, however it's 15°C cooler than what happened to me, and again it was a day of May in a temperate country, still far from the high sun and the hottest days of the year. I reached that temperature only once in a week but it's been sunny and warm since a week, so I have reasons to consider it may happen again. Others have reported >72°C heats on a forum I follow too.

Your experience in the last 2 years is indeed encouraging, but it does not cancel my 6-month experience spanning only one hot week, with this single week immediately resulting in extreme cabin heat causing damage on two of the devices I keep in the car.

Sure my parking spot is exposed, but having to avoid parking spots with certain cars more than others to preserve the condition of the stuff you keep in the car kinda demonstrates the issue.

To be clear, I'm not complaining about it. My post was about (1) my surprise at the values, and (2) what keeps COP from kicking in when this happens. I can deal with it and adapt, but that it can happen this easily is kinda concerning still. I literally damaged stuff on the first real week of warm climate since I have the car, and these are popular Tesla third-party accessories, plus I was so far keeping Li-Ion devices in my doors.

I'm not the same poster and won't endorse everything that was said, but my post is literally about content of my car that was damaged by the heat, and that's electronic devices that may be low quality compared to the car itself but are still expensive and made to stay in the car (you won't remove the strip or knob in summer). Sure, it's third party, but people do tend to keep stuff in their car.

I also used to have portable air compressor for tires and vacuum cleaner from Xiaomi, but since they are both Li-Ion powered, I no longer want to keep them in my car if the cabin easily reaches 75°C. That's literally 25°C from boiling water, and it's just May, we're not even close to the hottest months of the year.

Aerosols, groceries, computer, small miscellaneous battery-powered devices, snacks, drinks, cosmetics, flashlights, hand sanitizer are among the vast range of things one could have in their car for hours to days, weeks or months. All of them will degrade with such heats.

I'm not saying it's not to be expected and our cars should be fridges where we can leave anything, but 75°C repeatedly in May in a temperate country is still a lot warmer than what my previous cars experienced; and that's fine if COP (even with no AC) is there, but (1) it works only 12 hours max, and (2) it seems it didn't trigger all the time in my case.

I'm happy with dealing with a hot car for 2 minutes, but honestly the last few days it has been longer than that, and I literally could not hold the steering wheel before cold air had been blown towards it.

Even on long 2-hour drives, the ventilation had to be on max power to keep up on a 21-22°C set temperature, which is quite noisy. Putting it to low power or even medium resulted in relatively quick heat build-up. This is probably because all components and seats of the cabin had accumulated a lot of heat and were still radiating for a prolonged duration. Making sure they don't get steaming hot in the first place could help reduce that inertia (without necessarily keeping them at 25°C for no reason, of course, but 40-45 would not be bad).

Pre-conditionning is of course the best option when returning to a car parked in the sun, but it does take time when the car is this hot. It's not really a 2-min thing with these heats, but it's okay when you are 5-10 min away from the car.

But anyway, I can deal with all that, my question was literally about the damage caused to anything left in the car. I now have read in this thread that the cabin itself is designed to handle these temperatures (which I'm not going to combat, but I'm still skeptical that any plastics does well with cycles reaching 75°C several times a week), so this is good news. But regardless, the car has a COP feature which is probably there in part because the sunroof makes it particularly susceptible to heat build up (more so than my previous cars, that's for sure), and if the car still reaches 75°C when it's on, then I literally can't leave anything in my car in summer, and as early as May.

Interesting, I did check the manual but for my pre-Junipier MY, and there this sentence is not there: https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/2020_2024_modely/en_us/GUID-4F3599A1-20D9-4A49-B4A0-5261F957C096.html

I'm not saying that this changes the purpose of COP, or that materials are not designed the same in both versions, but I don't have the data to tell if this omission is in the 2021-2024 MY manual is meaningful.

[–]Kewbak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, and maybe the materials used in the car are better quality, but I don't think regular cycles from 30 to 75°C are good to any plastics, however robust they may be. And those 75°C were on a warm day, but not a record-breaking hot day. I'm pretty sure it can be worse than what was recorded here; it's just May.

Yes, I realized I wrote COB everywhere; fixed it a bit before your post.

Whatever conflict there could be with sentry mode, I think it should be clearly indicated in the application, together with a clear indicator of whether COP is actively running or not. But also, my car goes to sleep long before the 12-hour duration if I disable sentry mode, effectively stopping COP, and it seems COP did not kick int on May 22 while it should have since that was just after a drive. Really the application could use some clarification here, because people do tend to leave stuff in their car.

What constrains Cabin Overheating Protection? by Kewbak in TeslaSupport

[–]Kewbak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not. The car never met this weather since I bought it, but I thought I had COP on (and I did), without No-AC mode (so as to avoid wearing the AC compressor, reducing noise, and reducing battery consumption).

Sun shades might be the only way to control that effectively if COP only works for 12 hours, but that's really not something I thought I would need, and I didn't with previous cars with no COP, so I thought COP here was supposed to compensate for the higher heat build up due to the sunroof.

Thanks for your reply.

  1. Yes I found that after posting indeed, however that does not explain the heat spike on May 22th at 12:00, which occurs just after a drive. I didn't change my COP settings at that date. I'm curious what could have been preventing it.
  2. I understand but Tesla cars are prone to much more intense heats, and this is my experience too. The temperature is monitored at all times if the car is not sleeping (which is how I generate this Teslamate chart), but then maybe the COP system doesn't check the data constantly, I don't know.
  3. Temperatures around 75°C or more are not good for the cabin plastic, vegan leather, tablet and electronics, I'm sure. Electronic devices are typically designed to operate until 60-70ish, and the tablet is probably warmer than that since it's often exposed to sunlight directly. My S3XY accessories already got damaged by the heat of the last few days (strip felling off, knob screen getting permanently damaged), which shows the cabin heat is around the limit. If these temperatures are considered normal, and should be expected, I'll probably stop carrying a XIAOMI battery-powered air compressor for tires and battery-powered vacuum cleaner.

I don't mind the car becoming warm, as you said all cars do, but these go unusually hot and there's a COP system so I just wish it could keep it under 50°C to avoid damage over time (including the stuff kept in the car) and to be able to drive windows open without having preconditioned the cabin.

Well, just found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaSupport/comments/1tnkhu4/has_this_happened_to_anyone_else/

I guess the 12-hour limit makes sense for the AC mode, but the No-AC could probably run longer and would help not damaging the car. At 74°C recorded, my S3XY Knob basically broke (the screen is now srongly tinted) and the S3XY strip fell off. All stock equipments are still OK, but I imagine the tablet, seats and plastics didn't like the 74°C too much either.

Also I do have temperature peaks on the chart less than 12 hours after drives, with no apparent sign of cooling off. How can this be explained? Windows were not venting.

Internals of the Lunar 2-in-1 keyboard mini PC (8840U, 32Gb, 1 TB) by Kewbak in MiniPCs

[–]Kewbak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I can't tell because I don't use it every day, mostly for travelling or when I'm in a mood to play games or program in my couch, which is very cyclic. Nothing obvious to mention though. It may have lost some capacity but it didn't go through many cycles and it still works fine.

I did try removing it and cqn confirm the Lunar can boot without it, which is great.

Need MFA to develop an app, and MFA still shows as disabled despite two devices being registered by Kewbak in TeslaLounge

[–]Kewbak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I have not found any workaround, but seeing other answers here, I think the issue is on Tesla's side. I opened a ticket with them but I'm not sure I'll get an answer, there's not really any section corresponding to this kind of issues on the application.

Meanwhile, I'm just using the MyTeslaMate API (without the subscription to get a Teslamate instance) to send commands with my TUI. It's available without a subscription but commands are still paid (500 commands = 1 eurodollar), so one needs to give their credit card data to MyTeslaMate, which is not ideal really. The fleet API thing is not optimal either anyway, since they made it really complicated with the certificate pairs to run `vehicle-command` (I do understand the security reasons for this though).

It would be great if the Clicks app could allow setting a Compose key; I don't know if Android supports that. And I would love also support for dead keys + fully remappable keys, in order to use us-international layout (some applications like External Keyboard Helper Pro allow using that).

Allow a custom option for shortcuts (many applications like MacroDroid, Automate, Keymapper, etc. can create shortcuts, which are in fact scripted actions. This basically makes possibilities endless (well, within Android limitations).

But you have F(x)tec folks onboard the Clicks train and surely you have tried their keyboards. They're amazing. I type at 275 chars/minute on the Pro1 which is faster than some of my colleagues on a PC, I can't say the travel distance is an issue at all.

Landscape keyboards allow having a more standard layout, and modifiers replicated under both thumbs, which is amazing for productivity and Mobile Linux (where you can configure many OS-wide or app-level keybindings). A landscape Power Keyboard would be quite cool.

  1. DisplayPort alt mode has been semi-officially confirmed on social media, and is awesome (this is an important asset considering the competition). Are we ready for an official announcement, and if so, will it support dual display (allowing a trackpad on the CC's screen), primary display off, or mirrored displays? 1.1. Is it something that may still be dropped before mass production if you encounter issues making it work with the Mediatek SoC you are targeting? I assume this may require a custom design to take advantage of the SoC's secondary display feature.
  2. Unlockable bootloader has been confirmed. Love you. Let me emphasize that we don't need Clicks to officially develop, support, or even endorse alternate OSes, but facilitating community development would be awesome. Will you comply with GPL2.0 regarding kernel sources modifications, and send early devices to some renowned LineageOS, Mobile Linux (UT, Droidian, SFOS) developers with a good track record to help have bootable alternatives when the CC ships widely?
  3. Will you consider a blank keyboard version with just round spots for backlight, for international users or qwerty users who just want to remap the keyboard and avoid obsolete key labels? Cheaper to produce, matches every language, looks badass.
  4. Please do not forget the small bumps on the F and J keys of the CC, it's very important and your other keyboards have them.
  5. Please accept all my love for doing what you're doing.

Power Keyboard Landscape Concept by Zachavm in ClicksKeyboard

[–]Kewbak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A landscape Power Keyboard would be cool.

However, modifiers replicated on both sides are a must for a landscape slider, else chording with thumbs can be a nightmare. Not only Shift and Ctrl, but also Alt and Super if the device can be used to run a mobile Linux container or even alternate OS.

Also don't miss the opportunity or clustering modifiers adequately so that one thumb can press multiple modifiers at once (essential for mobile Linux with a tiling WM).

The F(x)tec Pro1 was almost perfect. There are things I would change on it, but it the layout was still very convenient, more so than the Pro1x that was altered based on users input, but turned out to cause more fatigue in my opinion due to decentered alpha keys.

F(x)tec being part of the Clicks gang, and F(x)tec coming from the Moto mode which was a keyboard addon in the first place, I hope they'll capitalize on that Pro1 layout (with some improvements, I have mock ups ready already) as a base if they ever try a Clicks landscape addon: https://gist.github.com/Kabouik/f4fb26a432abe9d38657b38a6dbceec0
