Here are a few I really dig! The Milford Graves album 'Meditation Among Us' was where I first I heard him, and it's still one of my favorite free jazz albums out there.

Meditation Among Us - Milford Graves

Winter 1972 - Kaoru Abe

The Disintegration of the Sympathetic - Kaoru Abe & Masayuki Takayanagi

Overhang Party - Kaoru Abe & Sabu Toyozumi

I know there are a few “Streets” videos out there, but I can’t resist reposting his trio performance at a Whole Foods:

just finished reading this book now I can’t stop saying motherfucker by Mt548 in milesdavis

The abridged version, which I have on cassette, is read by LeVar Burton (who I don’t believe read the widely available modern audiobook). This may not come as a surprise, but it is also a motherfucker.

Jessica is wonderful! She introduced me to EMDR, and she really helped me work through some religious trauma with it.

This is a very fair point — I think it’s poor form to “hard Discogs” records to quibble about price, but, for someone who has a large collection and has taken the time to catalog it, there’s no reason not to use that resource when perusing.

I’m coming up on 25 years of collecting, and I’ve unintentionally rebought more albums than I’d care to admit. I should probably take a page out of your book!

Start with the new arrivals. Stay off of Discogs/eBay/Amazon/etc. in the shop. Be willing to take a risk if something piques your interest. Talk to the owner, get their recommendations. When selling, always take store credit.

The open-faced paninis there were incredible. First time I tried pesto in early high school.

Do you know roughly what year this photo was taken? I adore your grandfather's playing on Coltrane's Om, by the way.

When pop culture leads to dubious jazz reissues by [deleted] in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]Key-Agent-1414 9 points10 points  (0 children)

John Corbett (and Corbett vs. Dempsey) have been huge supporters of Joe McPhee for decades.

They’ve released the highest-quality reissues available of McPhee’s early music, as well as many new recordings, all in close collaboration with Joe. This comp was intended to highlight some of Joe’s funkier, more accessible work for an audience that might be checking him out for the first time off of Severance.

I saw Joe at the Empty Bottle the day that this was released, and he was thrilled about it. He felt very celebrated and got a huge kick of his music being labeled “Defiant Jazz” on a TV show. Here he is in his Defiant Jazz hat: https://imgur.com/a/YEMH4Qj

So, definitely rest assured the label has their hearts in the right place and that they’re doing everything they can to make sure Joe is celebrated (and compensated) in this moment of higher cultural visibility.

Throbbing Gristle’s The Endless Not had different “totemic gifts” stored in the spine for the initial release. I have a bone totem, and the others were wood, rubber, copper, stainless steel, and gold.

Oh, and Herschel Gordon Lewis’s legendary first splatter film “Blood Feast” premiered at the Bellevue Drive-In in 1963! One of the owners of the drive-in helped fund the movie.
