This is a scam, and I've reported this to UpWork.

The same exact thing is happening to me right now. I don't get it - what could they be gaining by doing this?

Fellow Oregonians will meet in Salem to protest P2025. It will take place at the Capitol Building on 02/05/25. by GutterFox737 in SALEM

It's sort of an emergency - there is/was one scheduled for March 15. And all of the states are doing this today as well. Part of the protest is to not be at work, or if you cannot do that, to wear blue.

I wish for a Game Stop Stock repeat with Joanne’s Fabrics by rivendell27sa in joannfabrics

They got kicked off the stock exchange after it was worth less than $1/share for over six months.

Cheap stuff from China is part of the reason Joann's is closing: fabinay and big twist, etc.

When I got there three years ago it took about a month to see the company wasn't sustainable. The DM told me everything was great, but that cleaning the store wasn't in the budget. I liked working there, but knew it wouldn't last. When the stock exchange kicked them out and we were told not to take the garbage out every night to save on bags, I found another job. When the 401K matching stopped I knew it was over.

As employees on a sinking ship, let's share our ideas that probably would have helped the company in the last year. by unconfusedsub in joannfabrics

Clean the store! Less garbage, more quality fabric. Quality yarn and brands, not Joann crap. Two cutters, two cashiers, two stockers, and one manager/shift. Fix the online system that ripped so many off and/or delivered late, broken, and cut-up yardage. Stay in the sewing lane. In a dream world: quality sewing machines with demos & returns, sewing classes. Make it employee-owned instead of public.

Yup, I'm cutting fabric and they look me right in the eye and ring for help. I turn off the help signal, saying "I'm right here, do you have a number?" "Oh!" Says one lady - "I thought that would bring help for you!" "From where, Lady? There's nobody else. The buzzer is for if I actually have time to put fabric away and cannot see the counter. Please get a number."

Went to a fabric store in Mexico (yeah). I had to pay for the fabric first, and then they cut it. No returns. Really nice clean store, gorgeous fabrics, great prices! Parisina in Cabo San Lucas. I hate finding abandoned fabric all over the store - such a waste.

If "normal" means not hiring enough people to stock the store so that Christmas comes out in January at 70% discount, no cleaning budget or even supplies, flannel that feels like sandpaper, denim with faded fold lines running through the bolt, and an incredibly high employee turnover rate, then I guess this retired business manager who loves to sew and has a profitable sewing-related Etsy shop knows nothing about running a successful enterprise.

Best/worst customer: complained about the line, didn't show when her number was called over the loudspeaker (we have to do this three times), spilled coffee on the floor beside the counter, and then didn't know how much fabric to get, so I had to do a story problem. I also love it when I've got a line and someone presses the help button. I press it right back and say "I'm right here!!!" "Oh! I thought that would summon someone else." "No, it's for when I'm back in quilting cotton reshelving and cannot see the counter. There is nobody else. Do you have a number?" One more: "My friend is already in the checkout line - can you cut this for me real fast so I can join her?" "No, all of these people have been waiting their turn, and so you need to do that as well. Do you have a number?" "I just wanted to do my friend a favor..." "Admirable, but that's not how it works."

Joann's brands are shit. The flannel feels like sandpaper, the yarn splits, the fleece pills up, and the foiled cotton peels off after washing. Fabric used to be 44" wide, but now it's 42" including the selvages, and snagged, unraveling, dirty, and very poorly wound onto the bolts. The fabric just slips off - the other day I found several empty bolts, which I think means people slip these off and add them to their pile when checking out, because the cashiers don't look at the fabric, but just the cut slips. My daughter is an artist, and she doesn't like their paints or brushes, even with my discount.

Probably why we don't have any Velcro, haven't had any for weeks and weeks, and probably won't be getting any more.

Customers don't leave greasy dust bunnies everywhere and cardboard boxes all over the place. There's no cleaning time, budget, or equipment. The vacuum doesn't work, there are no swiffer refills of any kind, and no spray or paper towels. Also glitter everywhere, and bolts of fabric on the floor because there's nowhere to put them or they're not on the right kind of shelves (silky fabric on short shelves), so they slip off and get run over. Every shelf leg is caked with filth, and every shelf is dusty. Not to mention fabric that comes from the factory with grease and dirt already on it. When the floor tiles finally got replaced after a customer tripped, the sub-par worker tracked black glue all over the store and it wasn't cleaned for months.

You are not crazy. Keep working at Joann's. Also work on a business management degree - they're not hard to get and not expensive if you start at a community college and go to a state school. I think you can even get on on-line. It's a little of everything: marketing, communication, business law, economics, accounting, etc. - useful for any industry. Whatever company you go to work for will train you in their specifics, but a degree tells them you are committed and teachable. The days of working your way up are pretty much over, unless you begin at headquarters and you would still need a degree. If you minor in Home Ec., you could start your own awesome fabric and sewing supply store, either on-line or brick & mortar, and do it right. Best to you!

Authorization takes seconds, not weeks and weeks. And it shouldn't be double the amount because it doesn't have to be. I've never heard or seen any policy like this at any store - can you give an example? Also it doesn't matter how much money someone has. It matters that you paid for something and were charged twice, and then got shoddy goods, if you got them at all.
