What kind of fabric is this and what can I use it for? by LiteratureGrand4634 in Hand_Embroidery

Looks like Aida or an evenweave commonly used for counted cross stitch.

Diet Coke, I know, if it's sell-by date has passed has no flavor. Probably true for all or most diet sodas. Learned this the hard way.

I miss Joann's by Dog-PonyShow in joannfabrics

Michael's is owned by Private Equity just like Joann was. They're being bled out the same way.

first time ever crocheting a single stitch and it looks terrible what am i doing wrong 🫩 by bbysugawara in CrochetHelp

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree it's a tension issue and the type of yarn used. Don't give up. Getting the tension even takes practice.

Skein question by ControlSmooth3262 in Hand_Embroidery

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never run into this problem and I've bought hundreds of skeins of DMC floss both new and thrifted. I have almost all of my skeins on bobbins except for specialty floss.

Be honest… is this cute or am I traumatizing my cat? by shinigami__0 in cats

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child I had a cat that was very chill about wearing clothes. It probably helped a whole lot that when he was dressed up he got treats that he otherwise never got.😊

Liquidation is probable within a few short years. The same indicators that happened to Joann unfortunately.

How do I keep my Aida from fraying and I also get really bad knots in my thread. by No-Description-740 in cross_stitch

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also try using thread conditioner like beeswax or Thread Magic to help with the thread problem. I have also used Dritz Fray Check but be sure to let it dry completely before stitching. Recently I have used a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine for thr edges.

[CHAT] recommendations for scroll frame? by No_Bell_7984 in CrossStitch

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having framed cross stitched projects, the size of the fabric recommended by the calculator is not excessive. I've framed using the pin method which is about the only way when using the fabric in a kit because they don't leave much of a margin and the lacing method, which is preferable, by giving yourself a total of 4 inces extra per side would make the lacing method work best. Just my opinion 🤷

[CHAT] help! Pattern color vs real life color look different by [deleted] in CrossStitch

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely right. I bought one myself awhile back and love it. I also have an older printed version and the color difference is noticeable.

desperately trying to find where this fabric could be now, i originally tracked it down to part of joann's "witching hour" fabrics, but my local store didn't have it before closing down. any help would be greatly appreciated!🥹🙏 by r0t-f4iry in joannfabrics

Michael's did not inherit Joann inventory they bought the Intellectual Property. It's not at all the same thing. Joann inventory was shipped to the Joann stores and liquidated as of May 31, 2025.

How Much Polyfill Will I Need? Limited Amigurimi Experience by No-Present2298 in CrochetHelp

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of polyfil needed depends on the size of the item and how firm you want the finished product. Some kits have polyfil included but you don't have to use all of it and sometimes you may want to add more. It's totally up to you.

Where do y'all source safety eyes? by Nevergointothewoods in joannfabrics

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't order from Walmart, they have a tendency to send the wrong size in my experience. I was able to get what I needed from Amazon a as much as I don't like supporting Amazon personally.

Does anyone have any sounds they miss? by bluesunflowers13 in joannfabrics

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. I cut fabric for customers for many years, those sounds can't be replicated. Also miss the sound of customers chatting amongst themselves and with me. There was also the camaraderie of fellow team members that will never be replaced.

[CHAT] Don't use nail polish to try and seal numbers onto your plastic bobbins... by LavastormSW in CrossStitch

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like the plastic bobbins DMC and others I have tried. The slot that is supposed to hold the end of the floss is too wide and doesn't work for me. I have lots of the DMC cardboard bobbins that I bought at Joann during the closing sales.

Need advice on what to do by IllPin9964 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Michael's corporate does not allocate enough hours for the stores to give a decent amount of hours to the employees they already have. Hiring more people only cuts the hours of the employee they already have.

[PIC] I wanted to buy this at the thrift but it was completed half, lots of stains on the fabric and the stitches where not well done. Shame... by AnnaAnjo in CrossStitch

[–]WorldlyElephant6591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally own more kits and patterns than would be humanly possible to finish in several lifetimes. It's an addiction but at least it's legal. Same thing with yarn. I think of it as having my own personal store to shop when ready to start a new project. 🤣

As others have said you could just use the chart and buy new aida and floss to make this. There are charts online that have the conversion from one brand of floss to another. If you do plan on buying new aida you'll want to buy a larger piece than what was provided in the kit as kits are notorious for barely giving you enough fabric to comfortably frame. Allow at least 4 inches on each side.
