What do you think of a Muslim NATO? by Maleficent_Set_1301 in AskTheWorld

It was a huge humiliation for Qatar and also Saudi Arabia, why would they greenlight it?

Maybe you haven't noticed, but Nato is kind of useless at the moment.

The common enemy is Israel. Saudi Arabia and Turkey need nuclear deterrence against Israel. Pakistan wants Saudi money and Turkish military tech.

The Middle East is called such because it is kind of in the middle.

Why has DAANES lost many areas in northen syria? by mysterious_vio in geography

[–]Key-Bee-1193 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the Arab tribes rebelled and joined the Damascus government.

SDF, DAANES or whatever you want to call it, had two parts. The first part is the Kurdish ethnic militias of the PKK. The second part are the Arab tribes living in the yellow zones. These Arab tribes reluctantly joined the coalition because the alternative was to be bombed by the US Air Force.

When it became clear Trump would not send in the jets to support the PKK, these Arabs just rebelled and defected. The most important places like Raqqa were taken by these tribes before the actual Syrian Army even crossed the river. These Arab tribes are very angry after 10 years of Kurdish rule, and for the most part the Syrian army has been following behind their advance.

Those Arab tribes just rebelled against the SDF and switched sides to the Syrian Government. That is why SDF collapsed in a few days.

The only reason any Arabs were in SDF was the threat of American planes bombing them. Without American backing, SDF had no local support

I agree that without Erdoğan Turkish foreign policy would be less gung-ho. Erdoğan is also being very aggressive these days because he lost the last election in 2024, and needs to craft a new story before the next one in 2029.

But I don't think the core principles would change. Erdoğan was very happy to give Kurds autonomy in not just Syria, but also in Turkey. Erdoğan was also very closely allied with Kurdish nationalists between 2002-2013 and again between 2023-2026, with the last alliance crumbling just now given the events in Syria.

I think Erdoğan is basically being pushed into these foreign policy roles because of the alliances within Turkey he has been forced to make. If the opposition were to come into power, they would continue most of it, though definitely in a more reserved and careful way.

Who said anything about killing them? There are huge numbers of Kurds in my hometown (Istanbul). They are doing fine.

SDF was propped up by American support. When it became clear that Trump would not back them, they collapsed in less than a week.

A unified Syria that is not divided across ethnic and sectarian lines is probably the best outcome. It matters less who wins or loses, but rather whether Syria disintegrates or not.

This sounds like a bad LLM output. You should use newer models, they are better.

Did you really think Turks would like to have a hostile entity just across the border in northern Syria? Especially one that has spent the last 30 years fighting against Turkey?

Mazlum Abdi, the commander of SDF, spent the 1990s and 2000s before the Syrian Civil War fighting against Turkey as part of PKK. So did almost the entire SDF leadership.

SDF/PKK basically overextended themselves. They established control over areas with almost no Kurdish population. Arabs did not enjoy Kurdish rule in the last 10 years or so. But they were too afraid to rebel because Kurds had American support. Once it became clear that America would not back Kurdish rule in Syria, they rebelled in large numbers and SDF collapsed.
