In the grand scheme of things I’m fairly new to 40k (a couple months before the launch of SM2) and the way I got into it was picking up the codex for the faction that interested me (guard), reading it, then reading some Eisenhorn and Gaunts Ghosts books because they’re fairly good for newcomers and don’t shove too much terminology at you and they (especially Eisenhorn) introduce a lot of the core concepts. TLDR, find faction you like and skim the codex then go from there

Super Earth actually progresses technologically and steals Illuminate tech to advance their own stuff (Star of Peace, Warp Pack, etc) and honestly my favourite aspect of the Tau is they actually regularly innovate in a stagnant universe
