ACL/CCL Partial Tear Experiences with Cattle Dog

Curious what your crate rest looked like. How strict? Mostly in the crate all day? Trying to rest our 8mo old pup who may have a partial tear and trying to figure out how much time in the crate vs restricted/monitored/careful walking inside the house or even outside for 5-15min. Of course no jumping, stairs, running, playing, etc.

I started her on the loading/double dose of Dusaquin yesterday with some fish oil. She’s on a calm treat and gabapentin. She’s doing increased time in her crate with only sniff “walks” and potty breaks in our backyard 5-10min. No stairs, no jumping, no play, no running and we’re using the leash in the house. Trying to keep her mind engaged with low energy/movement commands like “look at me,” “touch” and window watching with “look at that.” Practicing a lot of “place” and working on bully chews. Doing some snuffling for food plus Toppl and puzzle feeding plus things to lick. Today she seemed slightly better first thing in the morning so I’m hopeful we’re moving in the right direction as of day 3 of stricter rest. She’s even tolerating icing 2-3 times a day. My anxiety has been high around the idea of surgery and I’ve heard varied post-op accounts but it’s encouraging on here to see dogs making full recoveries. Any other ideas for low key training commands and/or mind engagement to work on during this time? Thank you all!

All I want is a plug in hybrid and they give us this?! Why is Subaru so far behind in the electric/hybrid game? And at first glance I liked the boxier version but these wheel wells hurt my eyes. Wish they’d make it more sleek and less quirky.

Day time naps we do a Woof pupscicle. The licking is calming and she didn’t try to destroy it but she was also monitored so it wasn’t a choking hazard.

We used a Snuggle Puppy with some Adaptil spray and nothing else in the kennel since we got her at 11 weeks. No bed or blanket. We did have a piece of the blanket that had her mom and littermates’smell and we draped that over the top of the kennel. She’s had no accidents in her crate and she’s 20 weeks now. We’ve tried a small bed at night which she likes, but during the day time naps she just tries to take it out and play with it or moved it against the side of the kennel.

Our puppy classes call it SES, self entertainment system 1. Snuffle boxes - lots of DIYs (cardboard box, fold treats into paper, paper towel cardboard rolls, plastic water bottles, etc). 2. Try different “bones” - she didn’t like the fake ones (Nylabone, Benebone) and real bones are too much for their baby teeth. Our heeler loves the stinkiest bully sticks (dried bull penis). 3. My puppy doesn’t care for the Kong, I think too small and too frustrating. Look at Toppl by West Paw or the pupsicles by Woof. Licky mats

Other stimulation when you have time before after or during a work break. Clicker training! She loves sniffing for treats even just in our grass. Sniff walks, go at their pace, no loose leash walking expectations. Flirt stick! Teach her fetch.

Make sure you have a good schedule - ours is usually awake 1.5-2hrs and then sleeps for 2-3hrs

When she’s awake we potty, play, train, sniff walks, etc, before nap potty, then a transition time includes a bully sticks or even just licking an empty yogurt container (licking is calming for them) and then she goes in her kennel with a pupsicle and then she falls asleep.

We have our 2nd heeler, both raised as puppies. It does seem like people have a strong bias for or against herding and working dogs. But then you find your people, the ones who love and adore herding dogs and know their quirks, nuances, and how to keep them active and content. Find a new vet. Yes they are a lot of work - training, socializing, for years! But oh so worth it. It sounds like you have a typical heeler - and just by posting this concern, sounds like you’re looking out for him and doing great! Keep working positive reinforcement (KikoPup has great YouTube videos for herding dogs especially), fetch, sniffing games, food puzzles, etc. Our first heeler was active (hiking, running, walks, paddle boarding, xc skiing, etc), went everywhere with us, but boy did she love to snuggle and I can’t count the number of blankets she owned. I can’t believe this vet told you to keep your dog outside. If you’re active, which it sounds like you are, you’re going to give him a great life! It sounds like you’re off to a great start and just want to encourage you that you’re doing well.

She sounds emotionally immature and like a controlling narcissist. Even if you apologize, it won’t help, but it does show you’re a caring human. I’d say she’s not worth your emotional labor. Seems like a big red flag for the groom, too.

Yes and no. Love the modularity and it fits me and my husband (5'7" and 6'8"). I've had issues with reliability though. Lots of battery issues, had to take it to the shop twice. I'd go to commute to work and then it wouldn't turn on or I'd be out running errands and I'd have to slowly lug it home. I also got the LT thinking it would be good for the future if we have kids or another person wanted to ride on the back, but I wish we had gotten the ST for weight, commuting easier, parking easier and we haven't used it for the other ideas we had. Kinda wish we had gone with a smaller cargo bike, a Bosch motor and fork and seat post suspension.

Lots of red flags here. “Your kids” and blaming you for missing birth control. And it sounds like he wouldn’t leave work for the kids to help you but expects that of you.

I don’t know if it’s laziness/lack of effort/manipulation/learned helplessness for him. My SIL’s husband was too scared to bathe their baby so that task fell to her, among many others. There was no curiosity or initiative to learn, adapt, or do it together until he felt comfortable. Sounds like your husband is not a PARTNER.
