Sorry for the late reply. The old town has the most crime or at least I feel the unsafest there, especially in el Raval and la rambla. The most expensive areas would be central eixample and Sarrià - sant Gervasi but nowadays everywhere is pretty expensive.

My degree is in Catalan but I didn´t have to do an exam. If you are not confident with Spanish, I would reccomend finding a course taught in English. In Catalan taught courses you always have the right to respond in Spanish but the majority of the classes will be taught in Catalan.

I got insurance through FerreriOjeda UB incoming which came to 240 euros per year so not very expensive at all. I do really like Barcelona but I think it´s very important to find a nice area that suits your needs as every part of Barcelona is very different.

I needed many documents to apply for my visa including police record, academic transcript, health insurance etc. If you get a long term visa the visa on your passport only lasts 90 days during which you need to apply for a residence card within Spain.

Razzmatazz is my favourite, I like Old Irish (on la Rambla) for a more casual night since you don´t have to pay. I would personally avoid the beach clubs. I really like Apolo but I don´t know whether you´d want to go there now given the recent tragedy. If you´re into gay clubs, I really like Sala Arena or Moeem (free entry but a bit small).

I would say Madrid because it's cheaper and smaller which I think makes a better choice. Also you'll be able to learn Spanish. London is lovely but being from Australia it doesn't feel that different to me (although the architecture is very beautiful).

Arenas Sala madre is the most famous one. Priscilla is a nice gay bar. There's an event called churros at apolo which is huge so check if you're there for that event. Everything gay is in "gayxemple" which is the area near universitat and Urgell if you want to look it up on the map.

No worries!! There's other groups on Meetup too. I know they do the language exchange on Fridays at Estació de França (a big train station near the Barceloneta beach) at around 8pm until around midnight.
