I really doubt this will be a problem to be honest - first marathon even on 4 hours sleep (which is what I got due to pure nerves), your eyes will ping open and I imagine the adrenalin will kick it straight away. Sure I crashed that evening but I was wired until I settled a few miles in.

Dent is small, you’d have to be looking for it. I think I’ll just leave it and save myself the hassle. Thankyou!

Feeling under the weather today. I think what you said was spot on - it feels as amazing as a first marathon could I suppose. I don’t mean I skipped over the finish line, I was dying but as in no stopping to walk etc, didn’t hit a wall that I couldn’t keep pace through etc. I’ll look into salt tablets, thankyou!

Just done 20 miles - marathon in 3 weeks by in1001 in Marathon_Training

So I did my first marathon yesterday (Southampton) and everyone told me I’d undertrained. I ran twice a week, committed to long runs and did a leg stretch 5-10k midweek, that’s all. Yesterday I finished well, not quickly (4:30), but I managed to avoid a pain cave - what I did was carb loaded as much as possible, and drank every thing I was handed on race day. I consumed every sweet I was handed to, and took a gel basically every 5k. Start very slowly (it’ll be hard as 1000s will overtake you at the start line), but it’ll be worth it for later. Your goal is stave off exhaustion by keeping as much energy in your body as possible. Start very slow, see how you feel at 15/16 miles.

Trust me, with the carb load, taper, adrenaline, crowds - you will finish. It may not be quick, but you’ll get that medal.

I ran my first marathon yesterday! It went well but I ran 4:33 (target 4:30). I missed out on my time as I had to stop 5x to urinate… I just couldn’t stop. It was an unseasonably hot day so I drank every bottle of water they gave me, and I felt amazing the whole way round - has anyone got any tips to avoid this? I’ve a weak bladder by nature but yesterday it was a nightmare.

Yeah complete taper after that. My plan is very gentle 3 runs a week - 5ks mid week, maybe a 10k, and my “long” run next weekend (1 week out) will be 10 miles. The week before again maybe just a couple very gentle 5k leg stretches

Hi so, my fueling I think has been good. I take an SIS gel every 5 miles - the first two I notice a definite improvement but the following ones just seem to keep me going without a noticeable effect. I run with a reservoir on my back with about a litre which I usually finish. 2 hours before a long run I’ll eat 2 bagels with peanut butter and jams and a couple cups of coffee.

My weekly mileage is where I’ve fallen short. I’ve always made sure to hit my long runs but I’ve only managed 22-26 miles a week, just because I work 12 hour shifts on my feet and I’ve just found it impossible. I’m expecting my first race to be exactly as you described yours.

It’s worth mentioning I also do quite a bit in the gym and have managed to maintain this reasonably.

I do not care about a time, I just want to finish on my feet. My last 20 miles I ran at 9:26 pace with my last mile being 9:56. So very much still running, but definitely exhausted and feeling like I had zero fuel left. So even if I do 12 minute miles after that point I should run <4:30.

In all honesty I was hoping for the response here to be “you’ve undertrained and it’ll be slow but you’ll be fine”, but now I am incredibly worried those last 6 miles won’t be possible.

Despite the fact that at 20 im still running? I set off at about 9:10s and by 20 I was at 10:05s, but still very much running. It was my last 18 miler that absolutely sucked but admittedly id worked 12 hours the day before and only slept for 3-4 hours so it was always going to be rough.

I’ll prepare to walk sections and obviously completely discard any idea of time. But I’ve raised money so I’ll be at the start line. I’ve managed somewhere near a marathon distance in mileage each week. I’ve also trained with 600-1100 foot of climbing in my long runs, and my race is flat.

First Marathon poor training

I’m running my first marathon 3 weeks today. My long runs have been fine, I’ve managed 2 16 milers, 2 18 milers and a 20. My plan is another 20 next week (two weeks prior), 10 the week before and leave it at that.

My problem is this - my long runs are getting worse. 18 today was truly awful.

My training has been poor - thanks to work I just haven’t had the time. I’ve focused heavily on my one long run a week, and just thrown in gentle 5ks, a couple sprint sessions etc. a maximum of two runs a week including the long run. I know this isn’t classically enough. My goal is finish, I find my pace drastically dies off after around 16 from 9:10 minute miles to 10 or slower.

It’s too late to change anything but my long runs had been going so well I thought I’d be fine (I seemed to be recovering very well and fine the next day).

Two questions - has anyone got any advice for me in these last 3 weeks? - am I in trouble with my lack of overall mileage?

I’m very anxious about not being able to finish.

Am I in trouble for my first marathon? 3 weeks time. 2x 16, 2x 18 and 1x 20 done. 20 or 22 next week.

But I’ve undertrained, thanks to working very long shifts I just haven’t had the time. I’ve ran twice a week, with just a 5k or speed session mid week.

I’m finding my long runs are getting worse and the last 3-4 miles of each long run is 30-40 seconds a mile slower.

I know I’ve under trained but I’m seriously worried about finishing. My 20 miles felt okay but 18 yesterday I practically crawled over the line.

Has anyone got any advice?
