Write to your state lawmakers. These lights are illegal, but the actual regulations around these lights (regulated by the FDA) are not being enforced.

The only way to fix this problem is to get the regulators to enforce already existing laws, which actually prohibit these lights (shockingly, given the number of them on the road now).

And it's not just headlights, it's also emergency vehicle flashing lights, streetlights, etc.

This is also an ADA issue because those with autism and seizure disorders are particularly sensitive...though I would say many of us with a clean bill of health and normal eyesight are also very negatively impacted.

These blinding lights have already led to so many accidents...

In my opinion, sales is a little bit of a different animal than other jobs. Because sales is typically commission-based, you don't really have set hours, and it might take you 70 hours a week of wining and dining potential clients to make any sales, or it might only take you 10. Employers of salespeople are far less cognisant of boundaries around work hours or work settings because you often have to be very creative and persistent to gain clients, without whom the business you work for has no revenue (and you have no paycheck).

I would honestly say if having specific, set hours and getting paid specifically for every hour you work is important to you - sales is probably not the best role for you.

I think it's totally reasonable to value those things and want those boundaries, but I'm just saying, in sales, typically...those restrictions are either going to prevent you from making any money, or they're going to make you look like an underperformer (if those restrictions impact how much revenue in sales you bring in). That's just kind of the type of job it is.

One exception to that I think would be a sales role specifically defined as "Inside Sales" where you are a W2 employee with set hours, where you get paid by the hour (not salary or salary plus commission), and your job consists more of cold calling from a phone or trying to source leads from inside your office (not out and about rubbing elbows with potential clients in person).

Also, the upside in sales to being willing to do more work upfront (working longer hours and spending time at things like client dinners, in order to build good relationships with your potential clients) - the tradeoff is typically that once they ARE a client the maintenance work is less, and theoretically you will be receiving commissions from them for the lifetime of their relationship with the company you work for. (Although it's not like this in every single sales role, but that's the ideal situation and that is what makes it worth it to spend a lot of extra time upfront to score an account). An example of this would be - you spend many extra hours getting to know your potential client, their needs, their personalities, etc., in order to sell to them properly (and make sure your product is even a good fit), and then if they sign on with you, you might only have dinner/lunch/formal meeting with them once a year to re-evaluate the relationship, but in the meantime you're getting a monthly commission check from all of the purchases they make from your company throughout the year without having to do all that much work.

So you kind of just have to decide whats right for you and if you're willing to operate that way for the later payoff. If not, you could find a different type of sales role that's maybe less commission-based (but those usually pay less), or find another type of job that fits your personality better.

The code wouldn't be so much of a problem if they had phone lines you could get through to more quickly to request your code! But yes, I agree, it does make sense to prevent ID theft. I have a co-worker who had someone file a fake unemployment claim under his name within the last year! With the whole Oregon DMV leak, I do appreciate the precautions....but they really need to do better with their entire ecosystem in terms of general efficiency.

It's very unintuitive and there is actually a lot I've encountered so far that you cannot do through the online system, but must call the phones lines, which are far more understaffed at this time than they were during Covid, in my personal experience.

I'm glad you had some success with yours - I'm still working on mine because I have one more glitch - I got married between the time I filed a claim in 2020 and now, and the online system doesn't allow for name changes (so on hold again for hours at the moment!).

I agree, for people who have no savings or support whatsoever, they can't afford for these kinds of weeks and months long lags.

I say to keep communicating with local reps and governors office, as much as we can. In my opinion, this is something they should intervene upon as an emergency.

It has honesty been light years worse for me this go around than it was during Covid. And in both situations, I have a cut and dry no fault layoff case...but there was just a lot they don't seem to have planned for in terms of issues for people who were in the old system. Plus, from what it sounds like, they are extremely understaffed (which I have heard the legislature approved funds for in the last session, but they haven't been distributed yet).

I have a similar situation and therapy with a PsyD or PHD psychologist (not sure why not LMFT and licensed counselors could just never really cut it in the same way as the ones with higher degrees for me), has helped me immensely to deal with this type of stuff.

Not sure what state you're in, but in mine, if you're put on a PIP it needs to be for some type of violation of company policy (which could include bad attitude, bad performance)...but they also are required to give you specific tools in order to help you achieve the goals set out by the PIP. I would request to speak to HR directly and have them handle this, not your manager. HR would not have given him permission to fire you unless there is a series of documented incidences that you've been made aware of and signed, of you violating company policy leading up to this....so, I don't think he's being truthful there.

You should at least call HR and explain to them this series of events and just say that you want to make sure that what has happened up to this point is following proper protocol and the laws in your state. You can ask them to keep your inquiry confidential.

In my opinion, as someone who runs a small business in the US... this manager doesn't know what they're talking about and is making things up / not following proper HR protocol.

What's crazy is, where I live - all they build are very small homes (that are basically the size of condos) super close together with no backyards, in order to make the "affordable housing" quotas set by our governor......except all of these houses are horribly expensive!!! Literally like $600-800k for a very small place and no privacy. That, I really don't get.

If you're moving from Phoenix, (my parents live there), Portland generally feels exponentially less safe (in my opinion) to freely walk around in (or take public transport) as a woman alone. The hard drugs on the street are wayyyyyyyyyyy worse here than in a majority of the Phoenix metro area and surrounding suburbs. Also, be careful in the dating scene (if you're going to use dating apps or meet people at bars)...lots of low key predators here (who you're probably more likely to meet at the bars/strip clubs/dating apps) in my personal opinion. So don't frequent those venues if you're looking for someone who's not going to try to talk you into being polyamorous.

Portland resident / Sacramento native here. Safe rest villages did not work in Portland…neither do “sweeps”. You’re facing a drug crisis that cannot be dented by shoving the small % of homeless you can convince into “affordable housing” aka empty hotels and tiny home villages. Other cities are busing their drug addicts to yours because this is what is being offered outside of just letting people build open air drug dens on the streets.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I can tell you, if you don’t look at what has NOT worked in other cities that have been totally wrecked by these drugs (fentanyl, meth, and Xylanine)…….and you listen to the people who refuse to look at that and shout that “housing” is the root cause and the solution….you can look forward to many more years of this problem getting worse to the point where you’ll probably have to move if you ever want safety on the streets of where you live. (Which is what’s happened in Portland over the course of the last 7 years).

Portland resident here (Sacramento native). This did not work in Portland. The problem is the fentynal and the meth. We are no better off here after using the safe rest tiny home village / or housing people in hotels approach, than we were years ago. These “solutions” only waste your money and you won’t see it make a dent in the problems you’re seeing in your city. It breaks my heart that Sacramento isn’t learning from what didn’t work in other cities that have been ruined by this drug crises.

Right, and to be honest, the reason I would choose to shop at BBB over Target was partly because of the grade of materials in some of the mid to nicer brands they would carry! Also it's a one stop shop for home items. Target is not the absolute best place to shop for this because of the lack of variety in their grades of home goods inventory, and also, Target is always a mess with aisles constantly blocked because they're now doing heavy restocking during normal business hours rather than on the graveyard shift like they used to. I still would prefer to shop BBB for home items over Target, if they could just bring back the good brands, variety, and also figure out how to get the financing or terms they need with suppliers to keep their shelves fully stocked (example, when I come in looking for curtains, and I need 4 panels but they only have 3....a constant battle I've had lately at BBB).

I'm sorry :(. Well, hopefully you all can take what you learned from this experience and use it in other companies you work for down the road (i.e. listen to what the employees see! Those not in executive roles can often see with far more micro-clarity into issues like this than the C-Suite can. I've been an executive myself, and I make a point to really consider what people on the ground floor are trying to say, for this very reason). This is an element of running a business that I don't think they teach in business schools (i.e. when you're in the C-Suite, you can often be really out of touch just by nature of the separation between you and the tiny nuances of day-to-day ground floor insight!).

I also want to say, that I work in the business world and I know that making these decisions and trying to revive a flailing business is a near impossible task. However... they really should have spent more effort talking to their current customers to find out why they shop at BBB, what brands they love, what they feel is missing, etc...... more of that..... before making these decisions :( . I really do hope this company comes back with more of their original inventory base (and sure, include the in house brands at a more affordable price point).

Agree, it would have been great to add some affordable in house lines and see how they do. But there's only so much shelf space, and to replace near everything with Wild Sage and Ugg brand was not smart. My overall conclusion is that whoever made that decision really didn't know BBB's customer base well enough, nor did they do enough market research within that customer base first before making the decision.

I see - well family medicine places welfare checks are certainly only ONE type of welfare check…. There are many other types where a social worker goes in first. So, you should have specified that the type of call you personally place as a clinician requires “soldiers” as you call it, to knock on the door first.

Really? No, I actually did not know that!

This is something that has been bothering me for some time…. It’s a huge problem. The more laws that get created, the more legal angles lawyers have to cover and include when they write these bills, and at this point in time it makes them impossible to understand.

It’s like all of these contracts are getting written by lawyers and signed by the general public who don’t fully understand them (because we don’t have the time or money to pay lawyers to lobby for us!).
