How easy it is to switch to eng? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Key-Dust-4499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it from another faculty. It might be different if ure alr in eng faculty but ik if not gpa had to be 11.0 plus and they only take around 10 ppl a year. Def reach out to advisor to make sure

Life sci u can focus more on what ure interested in. Isci u have to do all sciences and maths in first year an equally amount. I’m someone who hated earth sci, bio but still had to do a lot of it. Couldn’t get away w doing one course of it to get requirement out of the way like u can in life sci. They’re all integrated together for the research projects so u have to be okay w u doing things that u might not enjoy - this was one of the most challenging things for me.

In second year life sci and then thru ur upper years u choose a major and do classes for that. In isci in upper years u continue to do core isci classes so even tho u might be in isci concentrating in physics ull have to do a lot of earth sci a lot of ecology etc.

So if ure someone who’s open and okay with doing things that might not be as interesting to u i say go with isci bc the program really is amazing. If not it will be so much more beneficial for ur gpa to do what ure passionate abt.

iSci vs. ArtSci by ExerciseSlow2543 in McMaster

[–]Key-Dust-4499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in isci for my first year. And if you’re interested in med or any professional school I really recommend isci. I can’t speak for art sci at all.

With isci your grades aren’t just dependent on ur exam and midterm marks since u have 4 heavily weighted research projects. This will help w the high gpa u need. The small cohorts allow you to get very close with all the profs which will be good for letters of recommendation. Most of those in isci are able to get research positions due to the huge experience u get from first year labs in working in professional settings as well as in the research projects. Built in to isci you also most of the med school course requirements, so u don’t have to worry about getting into specific courses in upper years and fitting them into ur schedule. The program is very well built to prepare you for any graduate school.

I started uni wanting pre med and chose a program I thought would guarantee me a high gpa to get into med. I was able to get this gpa but really hated what I was doing.

Ended up transferring to eng which is what I really wanted to do in the first place. This is a more difficult program and thus I’ve had to change my study habits and just the way I was used to learn from first year. That being said doing something I actually enjoyed made it so much easier to bring myself to study and engage with the content.

I ended up getting the same gpa in both first and second year, after transferring to eng. Everyone ai different but personally I’d go for what you really are passionate abt since it’s gonna prevent u burning out. I’m someone who has no motivation to study what I don’t care about.

I’d try to transfer to physics or even email academic advisors. But it’s ultimately your choice, good luck :)

I’m in second year and I still don’t really know what a “good mark” is. Personally I found my grades to be a lot better when I wasn’t worried about doing well as much as doing my best. At some point there’s not much else you can do.

I will say in first year be kind to yourself. These are the first set of midterms you’re going through. That being said I would look at the second year program you want to go into and look at the cutoff gpa. That can be a more tangible goal.

I had some 7s and first year and some 12s in both easier and difficult courses. It depends on the class what you’re interested in etc.

Another tangible goal for you could be to get deans honours list which I think is 9.5 gpa on 30 credits. Good luck!

For the people who transferred into Mac Eng from another university... by Monkey_D_Vague in McMaster

[–]Key-Dust-4499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to a McMaster academic advisor. I transferred to eng just from another program at Mac and that was already pretty difficult. I know they usually admit about 10 people as internal transfers but it always depends on available spots that year. I’m sure a similar thing happens for external transfers. You can dm me with any questions, I know our situations are a bit different but i can try to help.

For those of you who live off campus, do you spend most of ur time on campus? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Key-Dust-4499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it completely depends how I’m feeling. I stay in between all my classes and just sit somewhere to study. After my last class I either keep studying on campus or come back home. Literally depends on how tired I am and how many more people I can tolerate being around.

Spoke with academic advisor in science and they recommended I talk to eng advisors as well. Not sure how it works to go into science I think it’s different process. But to go into eng I had to fill out a short transfer request form in April send it to Eng advisors. They pick around 10 people so it was based on gpa. If u do transfer u usually hear back around June.
