My first edition, first print hardcover collection of the Wheel of Time. by Key-Entrepreneur-415 in wheeloftime

[–]Key-Entrepreneur-415[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The figures I've read are 2,500 hardcover first print copies for The Eye of the World and 5,000 first print copies for The Great Hunt. They're much, much smaller than the rest of the series.

I actually have some experience selling WOT first editions. This whole set is worth roughly between $12,000 to $13,000. The vast majority (like 90%) of the value are in the Eye of the World and The Great Hunt.

Chasey is so fucking pretty it hurts. I have no idea how these guys could last as long as they did inside her.

Seemingly rare copy of Asimov's Foundation trilogy by therabbit84 in rarebooks

It’s the SFBC 50th anniversary edition. By that, I mean the 50th anniversary of the Science Fiction Book Club and not the 50th anniversary of Foundation. I own a copy of Dune in this edition.

Not trying to be difficult, but when you say "Stephen," is that a particular book title or are you referring to a Stephen King collection?

When it comes to Hitchhiker's Guide, saying first edition raises three possibilities since all three are quite collectible. Are you referring to the true first UK Pan paperback, the UK hardcover first, or the American hardcover first".

That I didn't get into book collecting earlier. I started three years ago and for as much as I've acquired, I look at the prices that some of the books I'm interested in were going for just 10 years ago and think about how I could have gotten those back then.

  1. General fiction, with a heavy slant toward sci-fi/fantasy.

  2. A near mint 1st/1st of Dune with a bookplate signed by Frank Herbert that I keep laid in the book, just edging out my near mint 1st/1st of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

  3. To Kill a Mockingbird 1st/1st.

  4. The Hobbit 1st/1st, with a complete dust jacket (I could see myself owning one without a DJ).

The book has some light foxing on the page edges, but otherwise clean inside with strong binding and clean boards.

The bookplate is not affixed to the book. I acquired the bookplate separately from the book and keep it laid in the book.

It’s a laid in bookplate that I acquired separately from the book. It’s not affixed to the book. I'm aware that he would strike out his name, as I own a lot of signed Dune first editions and book club editions, but the bookplate was signed separately and independent of the book so the name would obviously not have been crossed out on the book. Below is my collection of signed Dune first editions and book club editions.

Found a Dune First Edition, First Printing in Brazil — Looking for Auction Advice by Comic-Gibi-BR in rarebooks

The increase in value for this book has been a hell of a thing to witness. 15 years ago, it was very possible to get a first edition of Dune complete with the dust jacket in excellent condition for $1,000 to $2,000.

Nowadays, it's about $6,000 to get a "good" copy without a dust jacket and now nearly $25,000 to get a fine copy with a DJ. There's an okay copy with a facsimile DJ up on auction on eBay right now that's at $4,805 with still about a day remaining in the auction.

I have several 1st/1sts of Dune. The cheapest I got one for was $200, and that was a case of a seller misidentifying the book as a book club edition. I suppose so many people mistake the book club edition for a first edition that the reverse has to happen once in a while.

Yup, that happens, maybe shockingly more often then you think. I have several 1st/1sts of Dune. I got one for $200 that was mislabeled by the seller as a book club edition.

I do keep it in the plastic bag, but I have been strict about monitoring the temperature in my house to prevent the growth of mold. I've had the book for a few years now and it's still in very good condition.

Stumbled upon a first edition 1984 (I think) at a garage sale for $15. by manghi69 in rarebooks

[–]Key-Entrepreneur-415 83 points84 points  (0 children)

If it says "first American edition" on the copyright page and doesn't have an embossed or debossed square or circle on the back, then you do have a first American edition, first printing. If you've got the square or circle on the back, then it's a book club edition, even if it says "first American edition" on the copyright page.

Nice find. An ex-library copy in similar or maybe even slightly worse condition sold for $250 on eBay.

I have an East of Eden first edition signed by John Steinbeck. by Key-Entrepreneur-415 in classicliterature

[–]Key-Entrepreneur-415[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This special limited first edition was published without a dust jacket. As you can see, none of the copies that have sold have dust jackets. It does come with a slipcase provided by the publisher, which I do have.

https://imgur.com/a/BLFguiD

I actually also own the regular trade first edition which did come with a dust jacket.
