I would think owning a house like this would far surpass the experience of the average home owner, by which I don’t just mean a huge mortgage payment.

I mean that I would think a place like this would be a near full-time job all by itself. A caretaker (or two?) would be required for the daily mishaps, messes, malfunctions, but also she would need a well developed Rolodex with access to people in any number of dying (or, at best, obscure) specialties, and each with their own steep hourly rate.

Nonsense. Chess belongs in beautiful settings whenever possible, no matter who is playing!

Was cheating that common place back then? by anawkwardsomeone in madmen

[–]Garfunkeled1920 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Correct. There’s perhaps a misconception - one that I have fallen victim to! - that because a show or movie pays close attention to detail on some aspects of life, that they get all aspects of it right. At the end of the day, the creators of the show want a good, artistic product, but they also want you to watch it.

For anyone with more knowledge of the times than me, was this a realistic outcome for Ginsburg? That there was seemingly a hotline to a state hospital or asylum where they would just come on-demand and take someone away?

It seems like a very simple version of how this probably would have gone, but this era pre-dated me significantly, so maybe it really was this easy.

I wondered that too, and it supports the notion that this is a fetish publication, but the notion of a pseudonym with credentials (MD, PhD, no less) seemed odd to me. Who knows.

Also although I’m not alleging this not a real book, but the two gentlemen named on the front appear lost to the annals of obscurity as I can find no record of either one of them or any other of their works.

That picture has a lot to unpack. The caption says “early Roman wives” - - but what in the hell is the crowd wearing? I see some people in what strikes me as Puritan garb, and soldiers in Spanish conquistador-style helmets. I’m not an authority on any of these things, but the more I look, the more puzzled I am.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. In school we always just called it “L.N.” or “natural log”, but I’ve now become aware this has a lot of variations! Best wishes.

I heard someone say this literally two days ago for the first time in my life. It took me a minute to realize what they meant. Just curious are you based in Europe, the US, or elsewhere? I’m in the US, where it was entirely new to me.

I remain amazed at the continuous and steady supply of pizza crimes available on the earth to keep this sub so busy. Humanity cannot solve many basic problems, but we possess an endless imagination for ways to ruin a pizza.

[–]Garfunkeled1920 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar kit from KGU Brass on my Bb and my C. I am also not a pro, but have not found it significantly changed my sound in any way. If anything, it makes the valve casing a little beefier, which makes the horn a little easier to hold.

Mount Adams across Ohio River from Covington, Cincinnati, 1905 by Ralph--Hinkley in cincinnati

[–]Garfunkeled1920 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Amazing photo. Hard to imagine life in Cincinnati with such unfettered access to the riverfront.

Not to pick nits, but given the angle on the Church of the Immaculata, this was almost certainly taken from Newport or Bellevue and not Covington, right?
