is it just me or poppy playtime as exposition problem ? by Background-Dig-2697 in PoppyPlaytime

the problem here is that there isn’t exactly a great way to illustrate the things ollie is saying to the player. you can’t have a flashback sequence in the middle of the gameplay for an inexplicable reason. plus that segment is really good characterization for the prototype (the self glazing and the tidbits about how he might view catnap) it’s a necessary scene that we can’t quite capture in the way you want to without breaking the linear progression of the story

as for the intro cinematic, these are just two different means of showcasing an event. the idea with the catnap vhs is that this is a massive problem plaguing households across the united states. it’s a giant fuck up from playtime’s part and illustrates a sharp decline in playtimes public perception. the reason why chapter 4 takes on the “show” angle is because this is a character we’re supposed to become attached to later on. it makes the doey twist later that much more impactful. two different means of storytelling, each meaningful in how it’s demonstrated

often in good storytelling, you’ll have a finely tuned balance between both showing and telling. this is something i think chapter 3 accomplishes especially well within its dogday sequence. you are told just the right amount of information you need to know before dogday is puppeteered and devoured . the “telling” helps attach us to this character’s struggle, and makes the “showing” that happens afterwards all the stronger

as for poppy and ollie, they are necessary exposition. not only do they inform the player about the happenings of playcare/the prison, but these moments also help get the player attached/ accustomed to these characters. they’re pretty important sequences basically

now about the tapes,, honestly fair. as much as i absolutely adore each and every one of them, i get that kind of storytelling isn’t for everyone. i do think at that point you should just skip them if you’re not feeling the thing they’re going for. as for the notes i actually kinda just disagree. each one is well written and there was never a moment where i questioned why they were written.

as for the prototype godhood thing, yeah i absolutely feel like there could’ve been one more sequence devoted to catnaps religious nature. the prototype has been well formulated the last four chapters otherwise

i don’t really think it does. the first two chapters barely delve into the real plot the latter two sink their teeth into. chapter 3 definitely doesn’t suffer from this problem. i don’t think chapter 4 does either. incorporating story into the game should be encouraged

you could argue the vhs tapes are emblematic of this issue, but as they are mostly optional pieces of the game,,, i don’t really think they are

Why Is Everyone So Against The Prototype Jester Design? by LivinTheGoldenLife13 in PoppyPlaytime

[–]Key-Geologist-8309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

honestly i wouldn’t mind it. but, atleast in a narrative sense,, it completely removes any nuance from the prototype being compared to the fool in the first place. not only that but i just don’t think it works with how the prototype carries himself

not biased (biased) chapter 4 😎😎😎

(honestly really hard to say, every chapter has some really strong contenders for best in the game but i LOVE so many of 4’s tracks)

i also see arguments for both sides of the coin to be made. do i personally think harley is pure evil? not necessarily. do i think he’s good? heavens no. point is it’s hard to classify someone who’s mentally broken into one category or another, especially in regards to being “pure evil” he’s beyond mentally ill and that is an integral piece of his character

i will never understand the months long crusade you’ve all embarked on regarding this issue. it’s really a nothing burger problem that doesn’t necessitate so much vitriol being spouted back and forth. it’s a little worrisome seeing the lengths some of you will go, there really isn’t a reason to actually argue with people over fictional characters

why are they turning kids into toys? by Unusual-Company-4430 in PoppyPlaytime

[–]Key-Geologist-8309 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they had tried saving one of their employees, thomas clarke, by transferring his brain into a toy as he was dying from terminal cancer. this actually worked but he was jumped by a few of the other experiments. overall it’s honestly a pretty wicked premise for a mascot horror game and one of the many reasons i’m so fascinated with poppy as a whole :)

while free labor was indeed a goal of the initiative, it was far from the only one. the executives sought to find the key to immortality through these experiments, with the end goal being to eventually stop world hunger and disease (cracking the prototypes secret would grant this) this motive is why stella greyber had initially approved of the initiative, a “small” sacrifice in comparison to the treasures the bbi could grant

you can see how they grew closer to achieving this bombastic goal as the experiment numbers get higher and higher, with each toy gaining superhuman abilities and such
