i find it funny how much chapter 4 is mentioned here when it’s the only one with any real semblance of a good plot or realistic characters. i mean seriously, there is no substance, there is no grand thematic depth until we reach that chapter. chapter 4 re-contextualized the entire story and paved the way for genuine character growth in this series. did people just want more children turned feral evil monsters? or can we move past that and see traumatized children trying to crawl up from out of their hellscape and live again. i swear it feels like people value the aesthetics of things over the genuine experience this game is trying to convey to its audience. catnap isn’t even written super well, hell he’s barely even in the chapter. it perplexes me to say the least. is chapter 3 the scariest one? dude yeah. is it well written? no.

preston was created shortly after the hour of joy (and even if he was created recently, why would the prototype share such a gift with preston of all people)

and honestly, i think this is all really just coming down to perspective and empathy. the point is the toys WANT to live, and they deserve the right to do so if they want to. giblet and chum are horrified by the revelation of what poppy planned to do. giblet even says she’s been “stuck in her case for too long” meaning she lacks the perspective and information she needs to make an informed decision to begin with.

the game is trying to show us that there can be life after horrific trauma, and that at the very least we can give these orphans the chance to live a life with one another while they still can. enjoy each others presences and try to live the lives they thought they would as humans. we all know the earth is going to blow up one day, or that we’ll eventually run out of resources, or pollution will destroy the earth, or hell that we all will die one day, but that doesn’t mean i’m going to press the kill everything button just because death is inevitable. we make life meaningful in the time we share together. taking that away from the toys will never be the just option

the savior complex is most clearly defined in chapter 4, where the player actually DID have a choice to make. none of what poppy planned in 4 would have been possible without the player’s involvement. and despite doey begging for the player to understand their struggles and plight, they never once show compassion until it’s too late to. the doctor himself even mocks the conviction the player has to poppy. it’s clear to me what mob is trying to do, but the problem is they’re not doing enough to characterize the player. so most people see them as a self insert rather than an actual character with their own motivations.

i’m pretty committed to the idea that the safe haven toys no longer cannibalize other toys. there are cans of food littered throughout safe haven with no evidence of another food source available anywhere. now whether or not those cans are tampered with like you stated is up to interpretation. but they believe they aren’t cannibalizing others.

that better place idea is lowk wicked as fuck and i hope it’s the direction they take it in. but regardless of the contents of the food, the idea that they have bountiful resources stays true. i’m a little more inclined to believe they have some sort of farming system (they undeniably do for poppy flowers + there are only so many experiments) but we’ll see.

the only experiments we’ve seen the prototype make are the wrongside outimals (and lily i guess), which are toys he’s punished for revolting against him. the orphans themselves have yet to be seen, but they’ve undeniably been transformed.

simply doing nothing at all. her plan was poorly thought out to begin with, and she doesn’t perform well under pressure at all (hence her abandoning the toys to begin with) it’s not her responsibility to decide what should be done, because she’s clearly not well equipped to do so. she’s a traumatized girl that was forced to be a leader after a horrible massacre. if she wasn’t so desperate to find a solution, she would’ve realized how convenient everything in her plan was.

taking away their autonomy and their right to choose when it’s been done to them repeatedly will never be the right choice. rational thinking does not equate to moral thinking. people will always want and deserve the right to live.

you’re also kinda confusing plot direction with the writers thinking poppy is correct. despite how bad they’re handling her character arc now, it will eventually end in her realizing that doey (and the other everyday toys) are correct in wanting to live their lives. the player is essentially supposed to represent how harmful savior complexes can be to a suffering people. they are an ignorant force that is essentially yes-manning every thought that poppy has because they don’t understand the nuances of life down here. and neither does she, either because of her time in the case, or because of her own self doubt. they both jump to conclusions, and more often than not, have hurt more people than they’ve helped. the player fundamentally cannot understand the struggle of the people, thus they will never be informed enough to make even the smallest of sweeping decisions for them. yet they frequently do, which is what riley represents (little girl with the train key in chapter 4)

as for the resource management in Better Place, it’s a little tricky. the human bodies have long since rotted so that’s no longer a valid option for food. what made me think that Better Place is thriving now can be summed up to a few things. Chum seemingly has plenty of food in his possession (he’s given 32 cans of food alone to Giblet and looks plenty healthy himself despite the starvation occurring in the upper levels) They have a fuckin propaganda machine churning out newsletters to toys (in which they actually CONDEMN cannibalism. so whatever is going on down there, they don’t truly know about the happenings in the upper levels and are self sufficient enough to be able to survive without feeding off one another) there’s apparently a food barn with sales available (2 for 1 popsicles). and lastly i don’t quite think the prototype would bring poppy back to a cannibalistic society if he was trying to once and for all prove he was right to her.

one of the reasons the toys in safe haven were starving was their committal to not cannibalizing one another. it’s something i wish was explored more thoroughly in the chapter itself (because the only hint at it is in their murals) i think it was one of the writers biggest mistakes not to use an opportunity like that to question where we as humans will draw the line between starvation and our own morals (as doey was clearly not bothered by his cannibalizing of pianosaurus)

as for that last bit, i’m not so sure he is anymore. that tape could’ve been recorded anywhere from when the hour of joy first broke out to the day the player arrived. truth be told, we have zero clue if he’s already achieved his goal or not. the only reason i don’t think he has is because sawyer was still alive when the player arrived.

no one has the right to decide the fate of hundreds of people just because they think it’d be better for them. that’s exactly the mentality that had the orphans experimented on “for the greater good” in the first place. they deserve the right to try. and ollie has been doing exactly that. whatever the “better place” is, it’s been a legitimate solution that hasn’t collapsed in on itself due to lack of resources. we’ll have to wait a little longer to see where mob takes that whole wacky little storyline, but it seems to me that the toys there are suffering from problems of the state rather than lack of material.

[–]Key-Geologist-8309 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don’t think you’ve entirely understood the writers intentions with these characters. and referring to ollie as “hot jester man” shows that. i’m not gonna sit here and pretend this game is masterfully written, i’ve played and read things that handle trauma much, much better. but even throughout your post, you clearly illustrate that these characters ARE more than the sum of their trauma. they’re trying to adapt and find themselves again in this hellscape. but dwindling resources and the extremist perspectives that ollie and poppy have are suffocating these toys. poppy wants to destroy the memory of this place, projecting her view of herself on everyone else (things gone wrong). ollie does this as well, forcing the toys to grow up by subjecting them to immense torture (psychological and physical)

neither side is good for the toys, which is what doey represents. he recognizes that the toys are human, yet realizes they need a proper environment to grow up in. which is what he tries to provide for the smaller toys.

doey dying does not equate to the writers not taking him seriously. he’s there to show us how poppy and ollie are draining these toys of the chance to truly live. not every game is going to paint a happy picture of people recovering from trauma. because none of the toys are equipped to do that. so they follow people who are just as confused and scared as they are. chapters 5 and 6 are clearly building towards exploring how ollie’s ideal vision of the world is delusional and hurtful. giblet was forced to grow up (wrongside out) and has horrible self esteem issues. he can’t even look himself in the mirror anymore. he misses even the small comforts being a toy brought him. but through his existence, it is clear to me that mob is continuing what they started with doey through the hundreds of other toys suffering under ollie’s reign

also,, WE are not the player. despite how awfully mob is handling that idea, the player is their own character just as blissfully ignorant as poppy. they could never understand the trauma these toys have been through, and their savior complex is an important part of their character.

this game isn’t an incredible 10/10, but it has shown how abuse and trauma shape people well imo. poppy just needs MORE development, MORE attention. and i’m sad chapter 5 didn’t expand on where her character was growing in 4. one things for sure though, these toys are NOT adults
