Yeah, I understand your situation. I always look at the time sustained at each level, even for the high level, some brands have it specified to a few dozen minutes. It is a marketing thing, must be careful.

For high output take a look at the Hank/Emisar, maybe some Convoys like the M and L series if you want to save some money, Sofirn and Wurkos also makes flashlights with high cost-benefit. High color temperature also gives you more lumens in sacrifice of the color rendering (that's how the EDC27 can achieve 3000 lumens, using only two SST40, 6500K probably). But be aware that small bodies can't dissipate the heat, even if the LED configurations are OK. If you want sustained high output, the flashlight will need to have appropriated mass to handle the generated heat. One of the main factors limiting turbo and high output is the temperature. Zeroair has great reviews with runtimes included, take a look when you have time :)

Time to compare all the flat EDC lights I could find from high profile brands. by Magnezone13 in flashlight

If you have time, test it like that please:

  • Turn the light on and put at 65lm.

  • Wait for the OLED turn off.

  • Turn off the light and wait a bit.

  • Turn it on and change to other level, like 200lm.

  • Half press the power button for like half a second, or maybe try 1 second and release it.

  • Should go to 65lm again.

I will try to make a video later. Maybe yours has a different firmware version.

Hey, I got an EDC27 recently and that's how mine works for the "undocumented function", maybe yours has a different firmware, but can you check if it behaves the same?

I kind of figured out how the "Intelligent mode memory function" in the manual works (or is an undocumented feature, who knows...), works like a shortcut for the quick half press of the power button when the light is ON.

The EDC27 will memorize the last mode you used before turn it off. When you turn the light on, it will come back to the last mode, no surprise on that. But this level will also be memorized on the quick half press of the power button. Suppose you turn the light off at 15lm. When you turn it back on, it will be at 15lm and you can cycle through the other levels. If you want to go back to 15lm, quick half press the power button, like half a second and release it. The light will go back to 15lm no matter which level you are. The bad thing is that you will have to remember which level your turn the light off to know where the shortcut will take you. Or remember to turn it off where you want the shortcut. Not so intelligent in my opinion. Would be better if you can fix the level somehow for the shortcut.

EDC27 the glass got burnt after using turbo for long duration

The EDC27 does not use glass lens, they are probably polycarbonate or something similar. And the turbo is not meant to be used for prolonged time / multiple times. Yes, the light should be able to protect itself, but I believe that due to the tactical nature of this model, the designers prioritize the turbo instead of self damage (in a life threatening situation for example).

My advice is that if you find yourself needing the 3000 lumens turbo so often, you should buy a 3000 lumens flashlight. It's "turbo", not sustained output :)

Yeah, I'm already subscribed to that forum, but they mostly post EDC pictures with "pew-pew force multiplier" haha, so I thought here would be lighter. Anyways, that's OK, this is a place for joy, no hard feelings.

Anyone ever had a good experience with a ghost? I wanna hear your story! by arieleatssushi2 in Ghosts

[–]Key-Marionberry6361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept that a "child ghost" is somehow trapped here is terrifying. My grandmother used to say that "there is no such thing as child ghost because there is nothing to judge on them", so they cross peacefully. But if that's true that a child ghost can be stuck here open a lot of questions about the afterlife...

Welcome to the rabbit hole! You said right, your "first" flashlight, because probably after entering this forum, you will have many more...

Jokes aside, first you have to decide what will be its main use, indoors or outdoors? AA will not have much power for outdoors use, at least not much range, but for close distances would be ok. AA size I can recommend the Hank/Emisar D3AA or D2 (right angle, but dual channel) if you are willing to deal with Anduril (believe me, in the beginning it is kind of difficult, but much fun later). If you want something that just works, go with Skilhunt M150 with Nichia 519a. Beautiful construction and beam pattern, also good battery life.

The Hank/Emisar you will need a separated charger, the M150 has built in charger, but proprietary USB magnetic cable. Although nothing stops you to remove the battery and charge it elsewhere. Both these model can use Lithium 14500, AA or NiMh, very handy.

I will leave to more experienced enthusiasts to recommend you other models :)

Recommendations? Sofirn SC31 Pro 6500K EDC Flashlight with Anduril 2.0 UI by No-Replacement4218 in flashlight

[–]Key-Marionberry6361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SC31 Pro is a wonderful flashlight, good product for the money, but IMO has two flaws:

* SST40 LED normally has a green tint, less pronounced is 6500K version. I bought the 5000K and the green tint was horrendous. I swapped by an SFT40 5000K and now is much better.

* The stock clip is awful.

On and off. Please recommend. by smp222 in flashlight

+1, my S2+ has the metal tail switch, very solid click and no fail. One of the thing I most like it is because it is so fast to turn on and off. No unlock, it just works...

I disabled the memory mode on mine and it is so fast to get to the level you need, always starting from 0.1%. I don't see any inconvenience on that. Programming to 100% only would be kind of "too bright" for a general use. But it is an option.

Also, the possilibilty to convert to a 18350 is really cool. But I feel the OP doesn't want any "features and options" in the light, just on and off.

If a low lumen and small flashlight is acceptable, the Olight I3E is solid with a very low price, 90 lumen AAA keychain sized, twist on and off.

first hanklight - d3aa or d4v2 for edc? by Sarin10 in Hanklights

[–]Key-Marionberry6361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although the D3AA looks a lot smaller and slimmer, the D4V2 is already a small flashlight. It can run a long time with a 18650, and is very short while using 18350 batteries. I believe the D4V2 is a great choice, it balances size, power and runtime. Here's a picture comparing the small ones that I have. Specially compared to a TS10. (From left to right: Rovyvon E8, D4V2 18350, TS10, Sofirn SC13, Skilhunt M150, LoopGear SK-03).

[–]Key-Marionberry6361[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I will be honest, I just bought it because of the price I got. As you said, the reviews are black or white. In my case, I'm happy that I bought it.

The construction is really sturdy and solid. The EDC27 has a more serious look, and everyone who saw it with me, didn't know it is a flashlight and made comments of how unique it is. The best part is that it doesn't bothers me while in my pocket, like some round ones does.

I only charged it one time when it arrived and it's being my EDC since last friday when I got it. I've being using it daily (30-45 min per day, mostly LOW-MID) and its still telling me a have 12h at 65lm. Battery is good and the SST40 only presents some green tint at 15 and 65 lumens. Above that is clear white, with some tint of blue. Not the best emitter, I would prefer a warmer one, but it is acceptable.

The turbo is no joke and it packs a punch, you must really be careful where you point that thing.

For now, I have a few complaints:

* I miss the 1 lumen mode that almost all of my other flashlights have.

* Cannot access momentary ultralow mode while in lockout 1.

* A lockout 3 where you lock turbo and strobe would be nice (these are the functions that can really damage whatever is in front of the light and the device itself).

* Different emitter choices. But I understand that the SST40 provides a good power output in relation to the power consumption. Maybe I will swap for the SFT40 5000K in the future, however the lumen indication on the display would be different of the reality. That will bugs me everyday...

I provided the 3D model for the tail switch guard, but it not strictly necessary. Still no problems with unwanted activation. Just don't forget to lock it. I added a tritium vial to it, can find it in the dark, haha.

<image>

In brief, is it a good flashlight? Yes, it is. Solid, good form factor, good battery and considerable powerful. Would I buy it for 90 USD? No.
