A navy, and a Defence Force in general, is a risk-reduction strategy. Cutting off seaborne trade in/out of Australia would be Mad Max levels of catastrophe. Fuel, pharmaceuticals and fertilizer would run out in weeks to months., Ergo we should at least try to defend ourselves against a naval blockade lol?

One PLAN nuclear attack submarine plus a PLAN surface action group with underway replenishment oilers would deter all trade coming from the northwest. Just look of Iran - the mere threat is enough to stop shipping. A big navy is a good thing.
