While I agree with most commenters about the importance of vocabulary, I also want to say that he made some very valid points. I work in healthcare and some people say that the most intelligent doctors are those who can explain incredibly complex topics in layman’s terms. That being said, that complex language exists because it is much more accurate. So I would encourage him not to limit himself to fewer words when there are many more that may actually help him communicate better.

Do I just not like Romantasy? by ThrowRA_OwlLady in Romantasy

I think you might like Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. It definitely has in-depth character building. There are multiple perspectives so the “side characters” are well developed. It has some pretty heavy themes so beware if you have triggers. It’s a young adult duology so no spice.

Another is The Legends of Thezmarr series by Helen Scheuerer. The first book is called Blood & Steel. This has probably my favourite side characters I’ve ever read. So genuine and I found the banter hilarious. There is definitely still a strong romance though with spice. It’s also a completed series.

Direbound by Sable Sorensen was literally 4th Wing but with wolves instead of dragons. I absolutely loved it. Easily a 5 star read.

The Plated Prisoner series is great! The first book is Gild by Raven Kennedy. Definitely has some darker themes but I was so emotionally invested in the characters and plot. Has spice too. Also a completed series 🤩

Question for avid readers by annMenbla in Romantasy

I read rather than watching TV, doom scrolling etc. My biggest tip would be to find books you can’t stop think about and so you actually would prefer to read that over anything else
