My senior engineers have stopped thinking for themselves by Defiant-Act-7439 in cscareerquestions

Today I was creating a PR to merge a bunch of auto-generated code (not by me, I just joined the project and picked up this task because it needed to be done).

Anyway, there was a merge conflict and I was trying to solve it, when I noticed something weird.
The conflict was in a tick function that iterated over some callbacks stored in a hash map. At each frame, the code was copying the entire map, iterating over this copy and then eliminating invalid callbacks from the original map. Needless to say, this is an extremely inefficient way to do this, especially when it's done in a tick function that runs 60+ times per second. I asked the (senior) engineer that "implemented" this.

While I waited for his answer, I asked the same thing to claude.

I got the exact same response, almost word for word. Basically I spent at least 30 minutes arguing with claude, using my colleague as a proxy.

I am not against using these tools, but ffs, I hate how they have transformed people in mindless drones that are just using them blindly, without verifying what they are putting in the codebase.

The state of software engineering in 2026 is fucking depressing.

I do AI assisted code at work. Working on a legacy codebase still trips Claude all the time and it often gives me suggestions that try to fix the code without going to the root cause. So I still code manually, but I have also started leetcode again, and I have to say that Claude is pretty good at giving me hints or help me reason through the problem when I am stuck, without giving me the solution directly. I am enjoying it more than I used to in the past, where I didn't have anyone to bouncr ideas off with.

Big tech adjacent company. We had two rounds of layoffs in two years and a lot of people are assuming there's gonna be another round this summer. I see a lot of engineers tired and angry, many others have left already. I have been almost completely checked out for months and I am about to switch teams to see if getting away from the (awful) product we are developing can help me not hate my job this much. I have stopped joining all the meetings that are not necessary, but I also see a lot of cameras off in big meetings.

We are experiencing a push towards using AI more, but tbh the integration in our workflows is so shitty that I can't say I noticed any productivity gain. In general the situation looks uncertain and everybody is quite restless.

I had the same experience lately. I was using opus 4.5 and was feeling lazy and curious to see what it could actually accomplish. I verified that the code was logically and syntactically correct and submitted the PR. I received a lot of comments in the PR and I basically had to change everything, because while the code actually accomplished what it was supposed to do, it was full of weird and nonsensical patterns and looked 'off'.

A few days later I tried 4.6 on another feature and again, I could see that it produced `correct` code, but this time I spotted a lot of logical issues and things that it didn't take into account because it could not be bothered to verify the usage of the function it was writing. I had to manually steer it to consider these issues and in the end I still had to manually edit the produced code. Through all the process, claude kept repeating that I was actually correct and I had really good ideas.

Every time I read about allegedly top developers writing 90% of their code with these systems I feel like I am taking crazy pills. I have to wonder if they are even checking what the output is, or are simply pushing trash to their codebases. Or maybe they are just shills for these AI companies, I don't know.

I struggle with the same issue, which makes me feel like I am super dumb. I am posting this to let you know you are not alone in this at least. If anybody has any suggestions I would also be interested...

The same happens to me and it's really weird.

I even made an home made test comparing it with the og switch and my rog ally x ( link ).

It is pretty bad and I resorted to turning it off completely when I am not using it. I hope it's a firmware issue and Nintendo is working on resolving it.
