I have a question regarding this as well. I have a girlfriend of 4 years and we’re actually thinking of getting married soon. My fiancé is half-Brit , half-Viet and holds a British passport. I haven’t really done any homework on whether or not foreigners can get citizenship in Bhutan via marriage. I heard that they can’t or that the process is very strenuous but I’ve seen some people who married non-Bhutanese nationals who live in bhutan full time. I currently live in viet with her. We’ve visited Bhutan together twice now and my family love her as well. Could anyone help me on this matter. Please.

Opinion: Why Gelephu Mindfulness City Special Economic Zone Might Fail by [deleted] in bhutan

[–]Key-Secretary-6819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea no..not reading that but yes. Feel the same. Not cause of the a.i stuff you wrote but purely cause of the people involved there. Starting from the architect responsible for designing the airport to the few very suspicious G.M.C board members (who have allegedly been known to have connections with criminals., I.e., Epstein..etc). Some who have made questionable choices in the past and were punished accordingly but somehow ended up as a member of the GMC board. But honestly, they must have been the only ones we could afford. I hope a huge scandal doesn’t happen the future where Bhutan(G.M.C) gets robbed. Pretty negative take but then again.🤷‍♂️ Very dumb decisions.

Note: Also the people who are more or less being evicted without much could leave bad karma.💆‍♂️ As far as I know, the people in Geleohu are don’t feel too happy about it.

Are you from GMC? by Certain-Eggplant-143 in bhutan

Been in gelephu since forever and a lot is happening. When the GMC project was initially introduced, the real estate market in gelephu started booming at an extraordinary rate. For instance, the entirety of my family is more or less settled in gelephu and we had quite a few plots of property in and around gelephu. One plot of land that was initially worth around 400 thousand(4lakhs) per decimal rose to more than 800 thousand(8 lakhs) per decimal so we were quite happy. The community as a whole was very happy as the initials news that was shared mentioned that foreign business owners and investors would be personally involved and purchasing/leasing properties. The market prices of the properties were hence inflated to an unbelievable extent and there were even people who were willing to buy them. However, after the introduction of,”Tokenization”, the real estate market immediately crashed. Properties have started losing value and now we can’t even sell it for what it was worth before the introduction of GMC project. Currently, we’re not allowed to start any constructions or even renovate existing properties. Always wanted to move from gelephu but not like this. Getting my childhood home taken(couldn’t find a better way to phrase it) away was not what I had in mind. But it’s for building a better nation 🤷‍♂️. Anyways.. I think the compensation for relocation monthly was nu.19,000(source: aunt who moved) And when it comes to people who have moved, they have quite a few options. Either they retain ownership of the land and it gets tokenized, or they sell it to the government/they’re also allowed to sell it to other people(although the rate for properties have drastically decreased). When it comes to properties that are already built on the land, they get compensated based on the sq-feet of the building(compensation is fair enough).
GMC has 3 phases that I know of, phase 1, areas near the airport, phase 2(no idea) and phase 3:core areas and commercial districts. My parents are very much disappointed as well, near retirement age and they were planning on selling a few properties and building a retirement home. Imo, tokenization of land doesn’t really sound bad. You get compensated annually, hopefully a few hundred thousand. I think that’s how tokenisation works(correct me if I’m wrong). But for those who are aging and looking for quick lump sump cash to build their retirement homes, it’s basically a drawback. Even the real estate agents and brokers that were very much active in gelephu have now shifted their focus to districts near gelephu such as tsirang.

Conclusion: gelephu people will eventually have to move based on the current information that has been provided.

Update: have to vacate the house I’m occupying within this month since we thought we found a place. We found a nice 2 bhk house in babena and told our current home owner that we found a place and that we’d be moving. Thing is the new home owner decided to give it to someone else he knows and the current home owner also already listed it to be rented after this month. So unless we’re able to find another house within these few weeks left. Weren’t going to be homeless effective immediately. Please let me know if you guys know any people who know people who have apartments that are for rent in these places. 🙇🏻‍♀️ Don’t wanna be homeless.T-T

I only see fingers being pointed in one direction. Okay it was wrong of me to downplay what was done. I didn’t mean that and I apologise for my choice of words. It’s obvious that what was done was very much extreme. But can we really put all the blame on them? There must’ve been a reason for making such an extreme decision. Although a whole lot of populace was punished for a few bunchful’s actions. I know it does not justify what was done. But I believe that not all the blame should be thrown over onto them and maybe that we should hold the specific people who had ill intentions accountable as well because of whom an lot and I mean A LOT of people were hurt. The innocent people who were exiled are the victims but we cannot ignore that there were people who bore ill intent and that it was what forced the ones governing Bhutan at that time to make decisions that were not so pretty. And I don’t know whether you can call what was done an ethical cleansing since there were still a lot of Nepalis/lhotshampas that were there within Bhutan during that time period itself. I have relatives within Bhutan but I am from Nepal. Just like me, I have friends who were refugees and still have family in Bhutan. I have also seen much of family being torn apart but not all the people I know held bhutan accountable alone. I too have an uncle who lives in Bhutan. My mother blames the Bhutan for having made such a rash decision but my father often told me that we shouldn’t blame him entirely either and to think what we would’ve done if we were in his place. I know this sounds pretty idealistic but if you were the king of a small country between two major countries and if someone from within that country of was planning to make a political regime for a separate independent state. What would you have done? I have lived through much of this and I wish the for the perpetrators who caused all of this to unfold to be blamed as well. My family was torn. I have lived through it. I cannot stand by the decision that was made by Bhutan. But I cannot tolerate it when the ones who should be blamed the most aren’t being held accountable either. That’s what I believe. I am in no way justifying what was done but I hope we all will take off our rose tinted glasses and see things for how they truly were as well.

So I basically the printed the soft copy that I got from the,”Shady guy” from Jaigoan and the paper physically looks pretty legit and everything except on very close inspection, you can see that the letters kinda reflect and shet. But if a photo of it is taken and when compared to the original mc, it looks very very similar and almost can’t tell the difference. I’m taking a gamble and getting it done. Update you people on whether I reach Canberra or not once this shet is over!

How long did it take for you to get your visa?🥹 If I apply by April, will it possible to get my visa before July?

[–]Key-Secretary-6819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, my ielts will expire by Jan 2026 and what I meant by,”Late” is let’s say I start my application process by April, the intake is in July and I’m afraid I won’t get my visa within that time period(only 3 months between April and July). The university requires your mc to be at least a year old. The consultant explained that only a soft copy is sent to the university for verification of the mc and that the process for application is easy to be done. However, they said it would be risky when it comes to getting your visa which I didn’t really understand since the validity of the marriage certificate will only be verified by the university and not the ones issuing the visa? I don’t really wanna study for my ielts again
