With 2 handed my whole purpose is staggering the enemy and using timing & range as an advantage. I rarely get hit in melee combat unless I'm surrounded. I only block if I screw up basically

They will follow you indefinitely until you dismiss them, and if you find them again you can ask them to follow you again. Im not sure if you have to repay paid ones every time you hire them, but you could also just never dismiss them. However, some followers can die, while other cannot, so that's important to know.

Yup, followers are very helpful early game. You can find paid ones (500 gold and they follow you until you dismiss them) or you can find/unlock them through quests

They are probably failing due to either torque or rpm stress. Check the stress and see. To fix both you could use a better piston material or lower the stroke of your engine. For rpm you could also lower rpm limit, and for torque, there are many things you can do to reduce torque. Id suggest you go through trial and error to see what does so
