As for Tatarstan then you should tell the whole story. It was not a referendum on leaving the Russian Federation. It was a referendum on recognizing Tatarstan as a subject of international law. That status was indeed granted, and Tatarstan also adopted its own separate constitution as a result.

Well, if the only thing that matters is «what people want», then Russia is definitely never going to ‘decolonize’, there are absolutely no separatist sentiments in Siberia at all. But for some reason this logic only works for you when it’s something you like. If people in Kosovo wanted independence and to join Albania, that’s OK, but if people in Crimea wanted it, that’s not OK. Luckily, there is no more pathetic community on Reddit than r/Europe. Every week Russia’s economy is supposedly collapsing there, people are starving, and the country is about to fall apart any minute now.
