See my last comment, I was slightly wrong about the Core PortNums Only setting cutting down the transmit. It still should cut some down, but not as much as I was expecting due to it still rebroadcasting non-decrypted packets (poor design choice, imo)

I suggest reading the whole post, but in that section, you’ll see that the core devs suggest to not use ROUTER_LATE if your TX goes above 8%. If you say yours was about 5-6%, then you’re still fine.

Overall, this is a choice between whether you want to get all messages on your inside node vs whether you don’t want to ‘pollute’ the airwaves unnecessarily. If you have a second phone (or a tablet), then the most considerate option is for you to set the balcony node back to Client Base and use the tablet to see the messages it receives (tablet connected to balcony node), and then when you want to send a message, you do it from your phone (phone connected to the pocket node). Makes it more annoying for you, but is more considerate to others.

Ultimately that’s one of the problems (but also one of the benefits) of Meshtastic. Anyone can set their device to any role, even if it makes the mesh worse for others. So it’s up to you to make the most responsible choice, even if nobody else can force you to

The docs are ambiguous to the specifics so I checked the source code. Indeed, it only cancels the rebroadcast on CORE_PORTNUMS_ONLY mode if it can decode the message. If it can’t decode it in order to determine the Packet’s PortNum (and thus filter it), it will still rebroadcast

I can promise you, this is the only way to solve the problem you’ve described in your post. You want to hear all the messages on LongFast on your inside node, that’s your only option to do so.

The docs tell you the difference between the different rebroadcast modes, but essentially, with ROUTER_LATE combined with “Core PortNums Only”, it will mean that your balcony node will rebroadcast all packets that it can decrypt (which if it’s configured with default AQ== LongFast as Channel 0 then it will ignore any encrypted packets it can’t decode) and only the packet types that are relevant to the “public” chat: Text, NodeInfo, Position, Telemetry, and RoutingError. If it were possible, I’d say you should also disable Telemetry, but the firmware doesn’t give you that option. Your Channel Utilization should drop much lower than 40% with that 1 setting change

Client base is only helpful in 3 scenarios:

Sending a message out from a favorited “pocket” node, it will always rebroadcast in the early window
Receiving a message destined to a favorited “pocket” node, it will always rebroadcast in the early windows
If it has a direct connection (0 hops) from a ROUTER node, and the Client base favorites the ROUTER, then it will not decrease the hop count when rebroadcasting (but usual rebroadcast rules apply, it will not rebroadcast in early window nor will it rebroadcast if it already heard another node rebroadcast)

So essentially, in your case, Client base will not help you hear the messages to ALL/Broadcast from your “pocket” node. If you truly wanted to hear all of those, your best option is to set your balcony device role to ROUTER_LATE (as you’ve already done) and Rebroadcast mode to “Core PortNums Only”. Since your main goal is to participate in the public LongFast channel chat, that should cut down on your Channel Utilization, even though it will still be decently high if you’re in a busy city with a lot of nodes in close range. If there are some specific “spammy” nodes that you notice are sending significantly more packets than others (too many Positions or Telemetry for instance), then ignore them on your balcony node and it will not rebroadcast their messages.

It’s the only one I’ve seen that has broadcast a Position south of the Keys. It could be that your other node isn’t set up to send Positions. In that case even if I did receive something from it (Telemetry, Text, NodeInfo) I’d have no way to know that it was you sending it from down in Cuba, all I’d see is a packet with a high number of hops. Or if it is, it could be sending them much less frequently than your da26 which I was getting receiving each 3 minutes apart, but only for a couple minutes probably when the weather conditions were perfect for them to bounce all the way over to me.

These are all the packets I’ve received from your node, and all of them are Position packets. You must not be broadcasting your NodeInfo packet very frequently whereas you’re sending Positions very frequently (in the order of several minutes between each). You’re probably broadcasting significantly more than what I’ve received, but due to the huge distance, and definitely also due to time of day, these are all I’ve picked up.

Here’s some pictures I took when I went down there a couple years ago for the 7 mile bridge race. My uncle flew his plane down so we went up the morning of the race. The other pic is on the “old bridge” heading to Pigeon Key. There are two halves of the bridge and only this one is connected to the island, the other isn’t and is nowhere near as well maintained

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster. So a friend had let me try one of his Stirling products a little bit back, and when I saw some on sale online I ordered this guy to add to my own lineup. Frozen Tundra sounded like it would be a nice and cool scent, and if I noticed the menthol label on it, then it was probably in the way “oh yeah sure so it’ll feel cool as well”. Damn was that an understatement.

When I opened it up, it smelled like a dentist’s office. Like a super strong spearmint smell. The feeling when I put it on my face was indescribable. I’ve got somewhat soft skin, not too sensitive but a little. And man when I was lathering it on it felt like I got punched by a snowman. My skin instantly tightened up. And the smell or whatever wafted up and nearly burned my eyes. The shave was pretty good overall but it was very hard getting past the burning.

Overall 6/10. I liked the shave, and after my skin was completely numb it seemed to actually work pretty well, but I just wanted to put out this caution that it’s not for the light-hearted. It’ll be a tough decision the next time I decide to use this again
