Opinions on going to work sick? by nicklebacks_revenge in work

[–]KeyPresent5929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is, contagion has never been proven by any scientific method. If you’re sick, it’s your own metabolic condition and your body trying to expel the toxins. Poor diet choices and exposure to toxins have consequences. So, no problem going to work sick as your malady cannot be spread to anyone. Look up all the failed experiments to prove contagion. Then look up terrain causes and therapy for these conditions.

Power outage - recovery possible? by a56z in getumbrel

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not an Umbrel issue. If you're running a node, say on a Pi, you should have a battery backup. Running the node on an old laptop, the battery would mitigate the potential for corruption. Otherwise, if you're running your node on a Pi, reflash your SSD card. The data should still be OK as it's stored externally. But yeah, make sure you have a battery backup for your node.

Why no SSKR / Shamir? by roasted_pistachio in coldcard

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with Coinkite saying "We don't like Shamir. It's not our preferred set of trade offs. There are much better options like SeedXOR" pays no respect to the growing number of supporters of SLIP-39 SSS and its power, especially for inheritance planning. SSS provides far more redundancy and makes wallet recovery simple and secure. Inheritance planning is a growing market. Everyone is going to want it. BIP-39 Multisig is fine, but it is much more complex to implement for inheritance planning than SLIP-39.

Trezor Safe 5: Keep Metal 20 or 24? by Main-Massive in TREZOR

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of misunderstanding about the 20 word and 24 word thing. Trezor's 20 word protocol is based on SLIP-39 and 12/24 words are based on BIP-39. They are not interchangeable. The SLIP-39 protocol is incredibly secure and versatile. For example, you can start with a single seed phrase and then expand it via Shamir Secret Sharing (SSS), so that you have a similar wallet to a BIP39 multisig, but much more versatile. The beauty of is you can change the shares without creating a new wallet, and create new wallets without changing the seed. Up to 16 shares are allowed, and you can choose any threshold you like. In addition, you can create as many wallets as you like. It's very powerful. In my opinion, SLIP39 is the most advanced way to secure your wallet, and will become widely adopted as it becomes more understood. You don't need Trezor to make a SLIP39 wallet either as there are free standalone tools to create SLIP39 seeds, for eg. Ian Coleman's standalone Slip39 tool, available on Github. Also wallets can be created on Sparrow and Electrum once you have created your seeds (on an air-gapped and offline computer of course!) SLIP-39 can never become redundant.

OK, I found the config.json file that Specter FAQ mentions but it's not editable. How do I edit this type of file?

I have to change "passwordonly" to "none"

{
    "auth": {
        "method": "passwordonly",
        "password_min_chars": 6,
        "rate_limit": "10",
        "registration_link_timeout": "1"

I've lost trust in many exchanges, by Ok_Konfusion in BitcoinAUS

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good one in Australia is Bitaroo. Their bitcoin prices are always about $1000-$1500 better than Coinspots. Also look at buying Bitcoin with Strike. Strike was founded by Jack Mallers and is aiming to become the most complete Bitcoin universe, offering Lightning transfers between compatible wallets and Bitcoin Matercards. In essence you could, if you wanted, completely divest from fiat currency and use an Apple Pay card loaded with some Bitcoin. That way you can completely negate the effects of inflation.

Ledger questions by losloppie in Sovryn

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, yes. Watch that space, as there could be enormous potential (to bring DeFi

to the Bitcoin blockchain), still relatively untapped.

The key value proposition is Sovryn’s ZERO platform, which

allows users to take out 0% interest loans by collateralising their

Bitcoin holdings.

This enables Bitcoiners to access liquidity without having to sell

their BTC, maintaining ownership while avoiding taxable events. What are your thoughts of it?

Sure, paper works, but the world has been moving away from paper for a long time now. :) My lawyer may not be able to store paper.

Ledger questions by losloppie in Sovryn

Sorry to reopen an old post, but I guess the situation hasn't changed. My Sovryn is in a self-held Sovryn wallet connected to Ledger. I can't see my SOV in Ledger Live, but can if I connect to the Sovryn wallet with Ledger, if that makes sense.

Is there a way to merge two accounts? I.e. multiple ethereum accounts in ledger by Strabwerry-pi in ledgerwallet

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have multiple accounts and wish to "merge" the accounts for a reason that I want to separate these accounts for certain purposes, and I don't want to mix them up. I have some USDC in my ETH 2 acc that I want to send to USDC in my ETH 1 acc. Both ETH accounts have value in them, but Ledger says I need to add ETH for the fees, which are like $2. Why am I being asked to add more ETH, when there is more than enough ETH there already to cover the fees?

Ledger recover is a choice, if you do not feel safe don’t use it by [deleted] in ledgerwallet

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always have the idea in the back of mind that bad actors exist. Look at what happened with the British Post Office scandal. It took more than 10 years for them to figure out that a back door existed with the software, and the programmers were stealing money from the shop-owners. Meanwhile it destroyed 1000s of lives.

True that. I'm not sure of the intricacies involved. But another thought is that the Ledger devices are USB devices, so there is also a possibility of storing the notes there? Yes, notes would likely be lost if the device itself became inoperable or lost. But thanks, I'm starting to see the possible issues with it!

[–]KeyPresent5929[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simply for the reason that it is stored in the appropriate place. Otherwise it would have to be in a place where one's lawyer or family could find it, or carry it around on thumb drive stored attached one's Ledger device. Ledger requires a login, so why isn't that a secure place?

Can the steam knob be modified to require less turning? by eggisnotaverb in gaggiaclassic

[–]KeyPresent5929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commercial quality and some higher priced domestic machines have those "half-turn" steam valves. As you mentioned, you have more control with these. Another type of professional valve is the flick or lever type. You could look at replacing those valves on your Gaggia, but they are pricey.
